today i priced up a new clutch plate for my integra at repco and they gave me a qoute of aroun 230 just for a factory replacement and i thought that was a little high so i went to central auto parts and they qouted me 120 for the same clutch .so thats a pretty big mark up id say repco are a rip off if you ask me

No, it's called shopping around for the best price. If everyone one was the same price it would be called price fixing. I bet if you tried a few more places than just the two you mentioned you could get it even cheaper than that if you ask them to beat the cheapest price so far.

lol i have mate and repco by far is the highest on the vast majority of products .i understand the ''price fixing'' term you use but a near 100% mark up is somthing to talk about aye!

100% is quite low with some other trades.

much like my mechanic has huge mark ups, charged me $118 for an engine mount i could have bought off here for about $80 from a retailer ( didnt know that till to late though )

I didn't realize this but if I as a company buy a product in for a customer and supply I am legally only allowed to "add/inflate" that item by 20% max to my buy in figure (sub total). Not that this happens but kinda never thought such a law or rule even existed.

It's a sad fact of life, but since SuperCheap came on the scene, the quality of products at Repco has gone down the drain.
And, all the knowledgeable staff have gone too, replaced with minimum wage monkeys.
*sigh*

100% is the minimum mark up for pretty much any retail store. If an item can't be sold at 100% and needs to be lowered then other items will be priced up to take up the slack.

So your mechanic made around 30% + gst on top! Sounds like a small margin to me.
Want some tissues so you can cry it out!

My whinge about SCA.
Went in yesterday to buy a single sparkplug (dropped one of 8 I bought last week and noticed a crack in the porcelain). Went to spark plug section and noticed they had moved and were now behing locked glass, prob because of light fingered losers. Fair enough, I thought, so I looked for staff member. None around, so headed to main counter to try and attract attention. They wouldn't acknowledge me, and told me I had to line up,and was told on finally reaching counter to go back to parts desk and ring the bell. Back to parts desk, it is now attended by two assistants, both dealing with customers. Waited patiently then was finally served, but had to wait while parts person looked up said spark plug on computer (why I don't know as I had cracked one in my hand and had toild them I just wanted another, and they were in stock in clear view). Finally received replacement plug at parts counter and had to wait at payment desk again for a while. Total elapsed time came to 23 minutes, for one part I found myself but just couldn't access, or get someone to allow me access.
Nice work super cheap.

Companies are here to make money. I run a business and mark my prices up over what I buy them for otherwise I wouldnt make any money Altho I try to keep it as low as I can Im not in the market to rip people off. Everyone has a choice if your not happy shop elsewhere.

I rang around everyone in town for clutch and pressure plates. Repco were the cheapest of the lot!

I agree that ripco are ripoff-artist nothing new there. but i would say a clutch kit would cost about 230$ you need to replace clutch plate pressure plate and truster bearing. and while your at it you usually Remove the flywheel and replace the crank seal at the same time and skim the flywheel if it was chuddering. Ony complete morons replace just the clutch disc, as that part is never what is worn out

#15 - Totally sympathise. Some businesses (and some professionals) need to understand that whilst you are hanging about for them to find a $1 item on their dumb computer systems, or, you are sitting 45 mnutes in a waiting room because someone is 'running a bit late', it is costing you money. At $60 an hour as a rough guide for any self employed person, that is $1 a minute - minimum.
I don't expect to walk to the front of an existing queue, but I do object when some wally can't find something in a catalogue. In pre computer days, the average storeman would have your item on the counter in a couple of minutes, it would be the correct item, you'd hand over a small wad of cash and be on your way within seconds and the item would fit first time as there were no updates every five minutes with different hole spacings, thread sizes, wiring, plugs etc,.Many basic items you could buy from the local garage/filling station such as plugs, points, filters, fan belts and lamps etc. for just about any vehicle.
It's called progress.

no, thats NOT what i'm saying!
item if bought from a retailer through tm$80 approx same item bought from my mechanic$118 retail.
they are not available in n.z new from nissan therefore aftermarket so logically they are both buying for the same amount wholesale , for arguments sake say costing them $59 inc tm seller is working on about 25% and mechanic 100% . THATS what i'm getting at . !

Whats wages got to do with staff quality, yeah it might be a indication. But at my local branch when I have needed an emergency part on a sunday, the staff know there stuff and are very knowledgeable. Yes it might be an indication but is not always "right"

But the key is repco is a larger business than you so they should be cheaper been more competitive. Vs the self employed guy.

The mechanic has much higher overheads to cover than a trademe seller

I did this with a set of leeds "coil pack type" for an au v8. Ripco 338,bnt 285,ford dealer 275.went back to ripco with written quote from ford they then dropped the price to 235 cash! Play them at thier own game I say!

Repco have long assumed that everybody assumes that dealer prices are automatically too expensive and they don't bother to check. The reverse also applies if dealers/new car distributors know that no equivalent aftermarket part exists. It wasn't that many years ago that leads for AU V8's used to be over $700.

I buy from repco because I have to be responsible for the parts that I supply to my customers. Repco parts are better than some and if there is a problem, they come to the table and pay for my time to rectify any problem caused by their product.
They also give good discounts, and if the discounted price still sounds too much and I mention it. they halve it.

Repco are good to the trade in my experiance!
