Sounds to me like you are just buying on looks alone. you think you are considering other factors but really its just coming down to looks in the end.
Edit, not meaning to sound harsh but I have seen this many a time on here.

I had one of those just after you tried the Golf mate. Sold in 24hrs. Just great timing as had an old boycalled in driving a 98 A3. He asked what to update too. Loved A3 so showed him 2003 turbo which he loves even more, as he should.

not looks alone, fuel economy is important as is having some ground clearance as we live down gravel roads, foot room, luggage space, reliabilty etc etc etc

Jazz, the lady who purchased the Golf loves it too. I hear they took it up north of Auckland at Xmas and are raving about it.

I think you need to do a search on here. There are heaps in that price range. Best you find one you like the look of then ask on here if they are any good or not. Theres over 10 pages under 7 seaters up to 15k

and yes i have to be happy driving it so looks are important

Its a tricky bunch of criteria to meet for the budget. You are going to need to compromise to a degree. 4 kids is always tricky as it precludes you from the likes of the Volvo XC70 as the extra seat is not ideal for everyday use.

Glad to hear it! I just love them, not often you find a car that is just spot on in every single way. BTW, not sure if you do much servicing yourself but happy to help you out with how to do the transmission service etc on them if you ever need. Its different to a regular transmission to service but easy enough to do if you have a good scan tool.

Yeeeeea not many yards in riverton a. Still find what you want and go from there. You will be surprised what some yards will do for you and what some wont. And its not all that expensive to fly and buy. $40 to chch some days. read dealer adds some will fly you and meet you at airport etc.

How is that not "nana"!! I don't see the point in one of those, they are far from economical. Not even close to being as good as the Touran. Older and missing two gears from the transmission for starters.

Sleep well old fruit, those cars won't sell themselves tomorrow! (unless they are VW's)

Mistrals.oh dear me.right. They are getting old now, transmissions are weak, very narrow inside and no luggage space at all when the rearmost seats are up. Engines are superb, but due to their age, alternators, water pumps and starter motors usually fail, $500 a piece (on average). On top of that, they suffer from some electrical problems, most commonly, a constant drain on the battery due to power supply continually powering up the arial (when it won't go fully down). Rear park light bulb socket contacts break off, and electric windows regulators and switches. If you must buy one, I suggest you get one with full service history if possible, and get it checked out by your local mechanic.

Imagine yourself driving a balloon full of poridge. Good off road capability though but with shocking departureangle. Ramp over angle can be improved by removing those stupid side steps.

I've owned a lovely Honda Odyssey and replaced it with an 8 seater Nissan Presage.I prefered the Odyssey to be honest.Better mileage and superior seating layout compared to the Presage.
The back seats of the Presage are only really suited to small kids in booster chairs, as there's really no leg room at all.The middle row of seats also don't come forward very far, so hard to get in and out of the back row.
However, the Odyssey does sit low on the ground, so I wonder how it would cope with gravel roads and you have to choose your Odysseys carefully as they suffer from transmission issues.

why not just get a 7 seater prado!
perfect budget for a reasonable one, good size for the task, op seems interested in 4wd's,

^^^^^^^^ This car is hugely overpriced IMO. That's a lot of money for something that's over 10 years old.

can someone please give me a comprassion view of the MPV, previa and oddessey (SP) please :)

You're best off actually going and looking at a few.
In general the Odyssey is a bit smaller and a lot more car-like - its basically drives like a taller, heavier Accord. Performance isn't good on the four cylinder when loaded up.
The MPV and Previa are larger and drive more like vans.

Also Mazda makes the Premacy which is more like an Odyssey (maybe a bit smaller)
