Does the lever move the full travel! Does it stop short, or, feel loose when you try to move into reverse!

Ok, if the lever doesn't move the full travel, and given that the box was out a while ago, then it's probably something in the lever or linkages.
If you are able to pull the centre consul out and the rubber boot off I think you will be able to see the most likely trouble spot just right there at the bottom of the lever. It could be that there is a plate that holds the lever, probably got three or four bolts holding it. the bolts may be loose. .
Is that right guys! This lever would go straight into the box wouldn't it!
I'm assuming that it is a rear wheel drive. If it'sa front wheel drive then you might have to get underneath and have a look at cables or linkages.
Either way, I doubt it's anything that would need the box taking out. It should be fairly simple to fix.

if the box didn't make any big bangs or graunching noises then I doubt it is anything inside the box.

gear shifter will move over to reverse but will not pull back in2 gear, is it possible that i have lost reverse gear and have to get a new gearbox! i have pulled the hole gear shift assembly apart, is slightly worn and sloppy, but there is no restrictions that i can c that could stop me getting in2 reverse, gear shifter moves freely to the reverse positionbut does not pull back from neautral

where would this switch be! bf hasnt seen it!

Well. I'm out of guesses. I suppose you have checked there is oil in it! Tried using a screwdriver to select the gear without the lever in there!

I'll see if I can find an online manual and have a look at what sort of box it is. then get back to you.
Exploded view of the box here/there. If it was low on oil it is possible the reverse selsctor might baulk at going in to gear. Check the oil. Apart from that, if it's not in the top by the lever then it does sound like an internal gearbox problem. and those are tricky boxes to do.

can you get a photo of how the bits appear under the plate! or does it have to be removed from the car before the rear cover can be taken off I see that the o/d and reverse do use the same shifter shaft as all the others but do have separate selector forks, maybe as simple as a roll pin broken on the reverse fork
