Once again Neville how do you propose to speed up the process/procedures that have to be followed!Your complaining about the length of time it takes and you have been given explanations. Any crash on a highway is going to cause problems and when it involves death or multiple death the delaysdepending on the circumstances debris field etc are going to cause problems. The emergency services are responsible for the scene not for the traffic diversions!Bitch on all you like but thats not going to change anytime soon! The only way it will change is if people do not crash and die!

So what are your thoughts on the person running the gauntlet on this occasion actually being a volunteer fireman!
therafter1,

Is it possible that one of the reasons for the delay was that the fire service were short staffed !
There was plenty of room around the Otaihanga 'crash' for a diversion to have been put in place at the scene.
The diversion should be managed by the police, after all one assumes that traffic management is a part of their job description, not just trawling around trying to find who is to blame, and they didn't have to go very far in this particular instance to find the culprit as what appears to be the culprit (a) wasn't going anywhere other than the morgue (b) is unlikely to be charged in relation to the crash.
This half witted 4kph tolerance seems to be working a treat so far isn't it !
Speed isn't the problem on this countries roads, bad driving by bad drivers is the problem, and holiday times create serious infestations of bad drivers driving badly.

im puzzeled at how the crash happened in the corner, when the sth bound passing lane ends so far up the road on the straight
the guy must have entered the corner at speed from his late overtake & lost it !

Dec 31, 9:04pm
For the life of me I have never ever worked out the purpose of that passing lane !

Actually, there was bugger all room to get round the scene considering the requirement of 3 ambulances, a helicopter, multiple fire units plus police. Some of you idiots begger belief. I listened to this go down and am totally happy the road was opened as soon as possible including something very unsaveory being done to speed up the road opening. The only road detour available is the Akatarawa Rd (Google it and see how bad it is) and the paddocks round the scene were (a) unsuitable and (b) waterloged/flooded. Maybe some of the knockers here need to attend the odd major, multi patient, multi trauma, multi death crash and see the way things happen. I've attended my share.

All of the photos that I have seen show the full width of an available lane plus a bit of shoulder.
Everyone understands that there may be a temporary requirement for road closure for the purpose of helo landing and takeoff.
Try to confine your 'idiot' comments to your friends and family or at the very least face to face scenarios, it makes you look a little small !
By the way, I attend MVA's as a part of my job and I do get to see a little of the over bearing over officious horse manure that takes place in many many instances !

Here here berg, why dont the knockers take the time to go to a scene, its shocking and stays with you for a long time.

Yes, and my daughter with two children, one a baby, in the car had to wait FIVE HOURS in that jam and despite asking the cops to be let through because of the children, they ignored her and gave priority to the bloody horse people. In fact, the whole 'highway' beyond Porirua out of Wellington and up as far as Levin is a total disgrace, largely unchanged for at least fifty or more years. Most changes, like the four-lane speedway between Paremata and Pukerua are completely beyond all reason, being bounded by a narrow two-lane bridge at Pukerua, and a narrow stretch of urban road in Paremata. The so-called Transmission Gully route has been talked about and bandied around for over twenty years, meanwhile in that time Aucland has had numerous multi-million-dollar motoways constructed all ove the city.

Well said #69. We would love to have a 4 lane hi way through kapiti,we all know that is what is needed, but if people drove to the conditions then all these delays wouldnt happen, simple.

When other idiots on the road try and stop you from getting back into the lane , there is a courier driver out there who will probably not have slept much since that accident , he was playing cat and mouse with the cars , he did stop and go back to the accident , when he realized what he had caused he took off, thank God for cameras he will be caught .

Another one missing the point. I haven't been to the moon either but I have a fair idea what a crater looks like, again. no disrespect for the emergency services, they are Heroes but what happens after them is nothing short of ! Thanks for all the chat on this, its a hard topic and saying it wont change is part of the problem, no I dont have all the answers but I voted for and take part in paying a whole lot of over-paid fat cats that have that job. [no offence to chubby felines either]

I said "In fact, the whole 'highway' beyond Porirua out of Wellington and up as far as Levin is a total disgrace".Last time I travelled that road, McKay's Crossing was somewhere between those towns.

The message to motorists is clear- if you come across a crash, make sure you get past it before the police arrive, and if you stop to assist make sure you drive past the scene before you stop.

Well considering any fatal crash is considered homoside untill otherwise proven I think the SCU guys should take there time to established a case either for or against a person. Imagine Neville48 just for a minute or two that YOU were involved in a fatal crash and the finger was being pointed at YOU as the cause and YOU knowing very well that YOU wernt the cause were charged with manslaughter as a result of poor evidence gathering at the scene. Im sure YOU would be a tad upset if some major evidence was swept away in order to get the road open again. So you lost a few hours of your life. Get up 5 hours earlier tomorrow and make it up. We live in a world of modern conveniences so it wouldnt take much to ring, txt, email, twiiter or whatever medium you choose to let whoever was waiting or whatever desperate appointment you may have had and let them know you will be delayed and the reason. This is half the reason crashes happen in the first place, many are in far to much of hurry to go nowhere.

Who is at fault in an overtaking manoeuvre at the end of the passing lane, the idiot trying flat out to keep passing anything ahead of him till the last second, or the driver who doesnt slow down to let the idiot pull in! Sure the guy being overtaken might have slowed down to let the idiot cut in and saved the idiots bacon, but when push comes to shove it is the idiot sticking his neck out and his foot down who is ultimately liable for the situation arising in the first place. When the end of the passing lane is coming up pull IN not push on.

You also said it was "largely unchanged for at least fifty or more years. " My point is several sections of that road (inluding MacKay's crossing) have been completely rebuilt. Trying to claim the road contributed to this, or most other accidents is just plain ignorant.

Sorry, I wasn't aware my cruise liner or aircraft would wait until I deigned to put in an appearance! Time lost is time lost and one of the misconceptions about life is that you can make it up. You can't.That applies just as much if you are five minutes late for work or five hours stuck in traffic. I understand your stance and your posts are usually sensible and well thought out but in this instance, have to disagree with you. Am I the only one on here who does NOT carry a mobile phone!Just because the majority don't seem to be able to last 5 minutes without checking for texts, (a sure sign of insecurity in my opinion) there are still some of us who can wait until we get home to check the answerphone or emails.
gunhand,
Jan 1, 9:33am
Yes missing a flight would be a huge inconvenince for sure. But the point of all that was what I said above it not just that section and needs to be put in that context. In this life we put "being somewhere" as more important than sorting out a homoside scene. And yes maybe you are one of the few these days who dont carry a cell phone or other such device and good on you. Its kinda the same thing but backward. You dont need to check your emails, txts, tweets all the time as you dont see the importance or distraction of it but you do put importance of "being somewhere" over a crime scene (I really dont think you do though) if you follow what im saying. OH, and I hate being late for anything and can only think of one time being late for work in 30 years and that was five minutes if that. But if i was stuck in traffic because of a fatal accident Im sure my employer would understand and if they didnt I would have concearns about there morals.
