Is that excessive or should I get another quote

rod525, Mar 2, 6:05am
Is that including pads, freight and labour as well as machining!

ct9a, Mar 2, 6:08am
auckland prices im guessing

crails, Mar 2, 6:11am
Just the skim front only they replaced my front and back pads a week ago.Central Auckland Price and a lady driver Commodore

carmedic, Mar 2, 6:32am
I'd charge $135+gst, but then I would of done the job right in the first place also.

crails, Mar 2, 6:35am
That's the annoying bit, why not tell me when doing pads that discs need to also be done

smac, Mar 2, 6:42am
What are new rotors worth on those!

intrade, Mar 2, 6:43am
ok to keep it short. machining disc is usually because they are wraped.
braking performance of wraped disc is affected sevearly at high speeds to slow a car down fast. high speeds is 250kph to 150kph
this speed you wont ever reach legaly in this country so in my opinion a wraped disc is of almost 0 importance at a slow speed of 100kph and below.
New discsometimes are also no much more expensive then machining cost
plus machining makes a disc thinner= the chance to wrap or worp them againis even bigger afterwards there is a minimum thickness of discs that factor is more important especially if the disc is internaly cooled.

Did a Honda, renewed the discs, major job having ti remove hubs and pressing off bearings, sod of a job.Not a 1 hour job for sure.

intrade, Mar 2, 6:54am
brake fluid was only toped up then as you would need 1.5 liter to flush em and why is the labour 85.96! they have to do 3/4 of the work already to machine the disc. Maybe 2seperate guys working on the job rest is as cheap asyou could get it when done by a charging outfit

intrade, Mar 2, 6:55am
theygot brake machining tools that do it on cars Ifyou have a brake shop you would have that machine

Excessive to me, got pads and brand new rotas for the front on my partners car for a 100. But every again car is different so it would not always be the case here, can't be bothered looking up the pricing.

Once again, it appears that someone (presumably a professional) is not being very professional.

I am not convinced that machining the discs is required as often as some of these places say. Unless warped (not wraped intrade!) or the surface is heavily scored, it shouldn't be necessary.Guessing here, but how many discs are warped after normal light road use and why woudl they be warped!

Even an amateur checks the state of the discs before fitting new pads, so why doesn't a trade outlet!

On one of our previous vehicles, I was told the discs needed skimming when it needed a pad change. They certainly didn't and I haven't been back to that place since. At the next pad change, they still didn't need skimming.

When they did a service a fortnight ago they mentioned I needed to get my brakes done, which I had wondered as it was taking a little long to stop, andBooked in 3 days later for brakes. When braking the steering is shaking and shuddering.New tyres and wheel alignment done 6 months ago

I would be interested to know where this quote was from! Pitstop, MIDAS perhaps!

crails, Mar 2, 7:33am
Midas

toniellis69, Mar 2, 7:41am
If its a basic commodore model, ie exec, acclaim etc etc new discs are cheap as chips. or ya can go one step further and get slotted rotors for around $250. Which fitted with police spec pads (more surface contact) make a big difference to stopping.

phillip.weston, Mar 2, 7:41am
That's your reason why. MIDAS have a motto - 'every customer is a $1000 customer'. It wont stop just at $225, they'll suddenly find your pads will need replacing, not just on the front but also on the rear, and they will guilt trip you into thinking your car is dangerously unsafe if you don't get the work carried out right away.

Go to a reputable mechanic, preferably one with a on-car brake disc machining tool like in that video above. Even if the rotors have to be removed to be machined (which is a simple job), most specialist brake shops charge about $30-50 per pair to be machined.

crails, Mar 2, 7:42am
PitStop have quoted $164 to skim discs and pads if they are uneven and bleed brakes

crails, Mar 2, 7:44am
Funny that if I get them todo my discs I will have spent over $500 there in the past fortnight

intrade, Mar 2, 7:46am
pitstop midas are usually the same . pitstop whangarei wanted to charge for machining rear brake disc that where brand new . all they wou find d have done is charge for it as there was nothing to be done. find a brake outlet that is not a franchise is what i would recommend for a quote

phillip.weston, Mar 2, 7:49am
crails you're in Auckland, surely there's a huge selection of reputable mechanics in your area you could go to!

crails, Mar 2, 8:02am
Dial-a-Disc are coming over this afternoon to do it at my place $100incl

johnf_456, Mar 2, 8:07am
Theirs your problem, they are utter useless a bit like tony's tyre service and pit stop. Go in for one thing and rail road you into doing everything else while your there.
