It is recommended that rotors and drums are machined every time disc pads or drum shoes are replaced.
It is not always the case, mechanic's like to suck you in with lies. If the rota's are ok upon inspection just change the pads for anyone who doesn't know. As per post 16, so it is certainly not a "must" every time.

$100 is better than the original post, but as above I'd still question whether they need doing. I've slapped new pads on crappy grooved disks and there was zero difference in braking. (yeah yeah the safety nazis will fry me for this.blow me).

No I didn't.I noticed their sign about brake bad replacement and enquired about it and his response was yes yours need to be done within the next couple of weeks and would take about 2 hours to do would I like to book in.They had my cell no to call when the job was finished, thought maybe as a courtesy they could have said.

Slotted rotors will only improve braking if you have a problem with gas build-up under the pads; this is very seldom a problem seen in street driven cars and is less common these days in competition cars with the modern compounds that are available.

finally after all this reading someone knows !
i tend to find more often then not the discs are glazed up,and the price of a new disc is very competetive with machining and in fact your gaining thickness by going new so less heat,100% true and less hassle of dicking around and down time

Years ago, I don't think anyone touched the rotors or the drums.Certainly I can't remember it being mentioned any old car manuals.
I think you used to be able to buy slightly oversize shos/linings for drum brakes.
Unless there was really bad scoring, the drums would rarely be machined, just replacre when worn out.Discs used to be of a harder material, but these days, the pad material seems harder and the rotors softer!
sr2 will probably confirm that a lot of race car discs these days crack undertthe extreme heat.
As above, you can often get a set of rotors cheaper than a set of decent pads.

Interesting story. When we bought our VP commodore 8 years ago, had the brakes done. They said at the time needed new rotors, I suggested whether they could be skimmed but they said no. The workshop then said they could not get hold of any new rotors so they had had them skimmed. Anyway just replaced the rotors 8 years later after 100,000km.

I would have had the discs resurfaced if they not worn out totally, owner left the grinding noise for about 4 weeks.Silly man for sure.

im getting new front discs an brake pads for $170,an thats for a vt holden.dont bother getting them skim.an $200 plus is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much.mate paid $65 an the guy came to hiz place.

yeah couldve got cheaper (had 3 choices) but went for the good pad option. but then some just love to sound like 'the man' no matter what is said previously. soon it gets down to "well (dramatic pause as per the monty python sketch). I got a full set of 6 piston wilwoods, slotted, cross drilled, with my favourite race drivers name engraved on them discs AND a life time supply of fluid AND new gold plated lines fitted AND a blowjob from the apprentice and they paid me $3000 to take it all away. and if you told anyone else they wouldnt believe you!"
