Nothing to do with motoring. but am sure you boys will have the answer for me. How many kegs of beer would you need for 40 men, party starts 6.30 until when ever, hunting fishing kind of blokes so some definately know how to enjoy themselves. thanks for your help

jezz43, Jan 25, 9:36am
2X 50 din kegs should do it

penwill1, Jan 25, 9:38am
Thats what I thought, but would hate to run out!, then I would not be the wonderful wife organising the surprise birthday party.

neville48, Jan 25, 9:46am
kegs can be messy and 2 kegs, 2 brands .330ml bottles will be cheaper and you can get many different brands, a small plastic warehouse childs swimming pool full of ice and yur partying.

skin1235, Jan 25, 9:55am
50 jugs in a keg, so for most of them you'll find 5 to 6 jugs in good company would have them starting to loosen up a bit, 8 or 9 will have a party starting 12 each will have them asleep in trees, pools, rose bushes, the back of dog kennels, under steps, under cars, under the stars in the middle of the road, and the odd neighbours caravan they forgot to lock
now a good average of 6 each for 40 blokes will set you back a good 5 kegs

but don't go ordering that many cos most of those hardass drinkers will have passed out by the 4th jug lol

morrisman1, Jan 25, 10:29am
I reckon you should budget for about 8 drinks per person. 150 drinks in a keg so that means you will about two kegs. As said, bottles can be cheaper than kegs unfortunately. Worth considering!

skin1235, Jan 25, 10:38am
start will a limit, they'll soon pass the hat around for a topup should it run dry, or go home so you don't have to fire up the barby again at midnight cos they've got the munchies, back in my keg drinking days a keg was 4 1/2 gallons or 9 gallons or 36 gallon, heavy great aluminium things with a wooden bung in the top you prised out with a screwdriver and dropped a syphon hose into, went flat within the hour unless you dropped a tablespoon of salt in it and of fairly dubious cleanliness too, ahhh the good ole days, off your face for a couple of days ( parties started friday night and ended sunday afternoon) and a dose of the shits til wednesday night to remind you why you hated parties - until friday, then you started again

jason18, Jan 25, 6:10pm
I would go bottles too. At least if something left you can save it.

ryanm2, Jan 25, 6:25pm
way more mess with kegs - there will be the resident beer expert too, that will tell everyone how to pour the jugs, how to work the gas, ask why you got these kegs and not other ones, he knows a guy that would have got them cheaper. just get cans/bottles.

s.patete, Jan 25, 6:51pm
Hahahaha, everyone must have one of those!

sifty, Jan 25, 7:42pm
can't believe the poofters saying get stubbies.! What is this, a vicar's tea party.!

Kegs are way more cool for a surprise bash, and far more manly. Well done you, the blokes will LOVE it. A couple should do, they can always organise a beer run if they run out, just make sure you have enough jugs and glasses too.

smac, Jan 25, 7:51pm
Crates.

richardmayes, Jan 25, 9:24pm
Yep. Kegs are ok for 21st birthdays where you want to get a large and undiscerning crowd leathered in the cheapest and nastiest way possible.

Assuming you are adults with developed tastes and nothing to prove anymore, as others have said you should fill your bathtub or similar with ice and buy an equivalent quantity of much better quality beer in bottles for the same price.

sifty, Jan 25, 9:40pm
Huh!
who says keg beer is less quality! Most micro/boutique breweries offer kegs if you're not after the standard fizz.

And besides, how are you going to pass the jug around for stripper money if you are drinking out of poofy wee bottles with your pinkies sticking out.!

yeahm8, Jan 25, 10:16pm
Kegs are more manly, bottles will just clog up the recycle bin and pile up, a keg also conjours up stories that older guys tend to have a lot of.for a party of 40 blokes that you may do man stuff, go the kegs.besides the men won't leave until the kegs dry so can lead onto a very long session if theres a few sissy drinkers amoungst them.

So, from a non-drinker.Query:If there are 50+ different varieties of beer for sale in the average liquor outlet, why limit it to kegs of one or two!Either there is a need for 100s of different varieties in the market place or there isn't.

Can't have it both ways, so either beer swillers at a party will drink any old rubbish because it is free and just want to get bladdered, or they actually enjoy drinking decent beer!Judging by some of the above posts, some are not too discerning.

elect70, Jan 26, 12:44am
Depends if they arebig drinkers . rule of thumb was doz cans per manminimum.Cans are best , nobroken glassor washing up ,Hire amobilechiller ( liquor store may let you have it for free if buying plenty beer )& 4 different varieties . . Cash in thecansat scrap man

sifty, Jan 26, 12:54am
So, from a drinker:

Yes, there are many varieties of beer, just as there are many varieties of wine, and they are brewed to complement various foods, occasions, weather conditions. Some are best very cold, some are best around 4 degrees, some are best around 10 degrees. Some are malty, some are very hoppy, and some are bland to the degree of 'what's the point'.

Now, I enjoy many varieties of beer and always offer my newest find to visitors so we can compare notes on colour, aroma, taste and finish. The thing is, if I am at a party and there primarily to enjoy others company, listen to music, tell lies and exaggerate my sexual conquests/abilities, I can't be arsed faffing about holding glasses up to the light etc. Plus it is very hard to go from a heavy stout to a wheat beer as they are so different your palate takes some time to adjust, and you end up not doing either brew justice.

In the case of a surprise party example given by the OP, I would be happy to quaff beer by the jug, knowing it is going to get me happily pissed and make my stories more amusing and me far more attractive to the opposite sex. This is the perfect opportunity to have a couple of kegs in, as blokes can bond over the ritual of tapping and pouring, and there is no poncing about, just sinking piss with your mates and reminiscing about good times etc.

I cannot see where you find reference to 'any old rubbish' either, as usually groups of blokes will have a beer they can happily drink together, and although overly sweet and malty for my preference, most NZ ales are perfectly drinkable (esp when compared to the muck mainstream american breweries dish up). Plus, as I said, most small breweries have keg beer available, but these may not have as much broad appeal to a group as the more mainstream varieties. You will generally find most blokes will have a preferential beer style, but also a backup brand they can happily drink in company.

Hope this helps.

Forty crates of quarts--one crate for each bloke:

Advantages:

An assortment of brews--catering to differing tastes:

Forty crates--seating (portable) taken care of:

Quart bottles--maximum portability, minimal waste, maximum variety, reasonable volume:

IF (God forbid) any left over--easily stored, for later consumption by DH.

mber2, Jan 26, 4:08am
Get a couple of kegs and as you said good old Kiwifishing hunting tpye blokes then make it a Tui.
after the first one has gone and they have started on the second they will know if they need any more so will have a whip round and send someone for a refill

penwill1, Jan 26, 5:12am
thankyou gentlemen, who would have thought one little question would bring so many varied comments, went to the local bottle store today and the manger said that he has not sold a keg for a private party for a least a couple of years, bottles/cans on special are the way to go, cheaper, no waste etc etc, I like the can and recycle comment and anyway they should all be thankful it is free!

franko171, Jan 26, 9:24am
dont forget sober drivers

skin1235, Jan 26, 10:17am
not sure if I should be offended or sad, theres not many gentlemen here and the demise of the kegs, perhaps both, lol
