Where to get 10w40 Castrol GTX

I have been trying to find the 10w40 viscousity version of Castrol GTX oil in Christchurch. All that the local stores hold is the 15w40 version, which is a little heavier than I'd like for winter. Anyone seen this oil around anywhere!

Why not just get Magnatec!

clark20, Jun 28, 6:28pm
What , you belive an ad for Amsoil! And it compared to Mobil one in some cases. Castrol is a trusted brand name with various levels of quality for different price groups. Most oils these days are OK for 10- 20 year old runabouts, as long as it is changed on time

Edit, Amsoil is good oil but overpriced

get magnatec

supernova2, Jun 28, 6:43pm
why not riong castrol and ask them to point you in direction of someone who has some stock!

lugee, Jun 28, 6:48pm
I would use Magnatec but I would rather stick with mineral oil, as thats what is currently in there and Magnatec is pretty expensive.

Well if you believe all the hype about how "new technology oil" is "better" orthat it perhaps contains "intelligent molecules that know where to go" then oh boy, have I got some products that you need to buy, Sonny!

Meanwhile, in the real world (where all working parts of an engine - and their clearances - are designed assuming an oil viscosity of either X, Y, or Z,) my old Umph made it to 200,000 miles before it broke a couple of rings and started making lots of smoke.
Bearings were almost good enough to re-use, the mechanic said. All of her owners had only ever used the tried & true GTX.

Anyone remember the days of Supreme re-refined oil!

rovercitroen, Jun 28, 7:15pm
Yip. Dad used it for years. The ARA Buses in Auckland ran on it too.

clark20, Jun 28, 7:54pm
Does not prove anything except changing viscosity can make a difference. Synthetic is not required on most cars, and ask any cam guy about synthetic, it does not stick to the shiny stuff (like cams) but is great for high temp and longevity.

gilligan2, Jun 28, 7:59pm
Semi synthetic has no regulation on how much synthetic it has in it. For example magnetec is 95 % mineral 5% synthetic and it can be labelled semi synthetic.

Dont believe the hype. Aslong as you have oil in your car it wont have an engine failiure, no matter how cheap it is. (unless its a ultra hispec machine ofcourse).

get any service station to order it for you

ml6989, Jun 28, 8:06pm
I grizzle to the Castrol rep from time to time about the price of their oil and his standard reply, with a chuckle, - "Price is forgotten once quality is realised"

lugee, Jun 28, 8:26pm
I've checked all the major auto chain and they all only have the 15w40 viscousity.

jasongroves, Jun 28, 8:35pm
Yeah.Im sure that would be much cheaper than just buying Magnatec from the outset.;)

johnf_456, Jun 28, 8:40pm
Service station to order oil!

jasongroves, Jun 28, 8:50pm
Im interested to know what sort of vehicle it is for!

lugee, Jun 28, 9:14pm
1989 Honda CRX Si

jasongroves, Jun 28, 9:18pm
15w-40 is fine for that vehicle. API rating of SG or better and good to go.

sharlie4, Jun 28, 9:18pm
I doubt very much it will make any difference using 15w40.

lugee, Jun 28, 9:52pm
Care to elaborate!

r15, Jun 28, 10:19pm
show me an engine that has failed at fault of a castrol product.(here we go)

jasongroves, Jun 28, 10:51pm
I think you will find the majority of 'mineral oils' (including GTX) carry an additive or 2, so they are really a mineral base oil with synthetic, mineral and other chemical additives.
So GTX, as an example, would not be a true mineral oil at all.
Just that its base is a higher percentage mineral than that of a so called semi-synthetic.

Was told to use mineral GTX oil in my new 4 stroke outboard.
They had seen many that used semi (or 100%) synthetic with rings that have not seated, burning oil. Outboard not working hard enough to run in properly.

Sounds logical too from my experience with BMW motorcyles, that need a severe thrashing to bed them in properly, rather difficult with 100km limit.

Use Magnatec in my car, I can get it working up steep hills in low gears to bed it in no worries.

The new Red Shed mailer has 10w-40 semi-synthetic for $35 for 4L;)
