has anyone else noticed that the repco adds we see are aussies saying ripco we have been calling them that for years

jason_247, Jun 25, 8:34pm
has anyone noticed they are having a sale every single weekend for the past few months and giving huge discounts till the end of july (aa rewards card)

might have something to do with the investment company that owns it realising its a failing business and trying to make the sales look good before selling it off in july

thejazzpianoma, Jun 25, 8:42pm
My closest local one has just shut down. Its a shame to see it go the way of Briscoes where they try and sell the majority of goods on "Sale" for a fair price.

This model may suit those wanting cheap bling accessories but only drives away home mechanics. Those are the guys who need it now and can't wait for it to be on sale as to avoid paying a small fortune for cheesy quality K Mart style gear.

When you can buy "real stuff" cheaper at the wholesalers (even without a proper trade discount) is it no wonder they are suffering!

franc123, Jun 25, 8:44pm
Yeah you have to wonder, Repco almost never used to discount anything, let alone have storewide sales on a regular basis, and certainly not prior to SCA coming on the scene. But lets face it anyone with any brains these days who can plan ahead buys car parts online from overseas rather than pay their retail, or even their trade prices, as they are often better even taking into account exchange rates and freight.

R- Rip
E- Every
P- Poor
C- *unt
O- Off
sorry to my local repco they are actually quite helpful

jason_247, Jun 25, 8:50pm
repco used to give trade discount out willy nilly but then had to jack up their retail prices to compensate

sca has forced them to lower their retail to not look rip off

they have two options reduce trade discount so they dont go broke and lose half their customers

or not reduce trade discount and go broke all together

they chose the later

franc123, Jun 25, 9:01pm
I don't know about lower retail prices, many of them are more expensive than they ever were in relation to the opposition.Just one example recently was a 4L pack of a certain type of ATF I happened to look at, the price of it at repco was a full $17 more than SCA for an identical product from the same manufacturer, which was about 25% more.

roys351, Jun 25, 9:20pm
yep but the sad thing for us is sca will kill repco then up there prices

bigracket, Jun 25, 10:12pm
It goes the other way as well, brought a motorbike battery $30 cheaper at repco than scaso there you go. Shop around. shop around.

thejazzpianoma, Jun 25, 10:20pm
Thats the thing, with giving 20% automatically to AA card holders, motorhome association people etc etc its pretty clear they have gone the Briscoes way. Basically sailing a fine line on whats allowed under the fair trading act with regard to artificially inflating regular prices to make people think they are getting a bargain with a store card or a sale.

Also, the"sale mentality" goes hand in hand with the shelves being taken over by "mechpro" rubbish.

Remember the golden rule, if it has Trade, Pro or Professional in the name its probably the complete opposite of a trade quality item.

crzyhrse, Jun 26, 10:13am
You can play them off against one another too. They'll actually ring one another to check when you claim something is cheaper at the competition and then beat that price (although it's faster if you take the mailer!).

The main problem I have found with Repco is their incompenant staff .Still I guess if you pay peanuts you get monkeys!

destiny6nz, Jun 26, 11:11am
i went to REPCO recently and the service was great. SUPERauto are really good too

doug207, Jun 26, 11:24am
I went in to the Palmerston North one for a giggle to see if they could do me a ytx12 bike battery, apparently they don't do that!

elect70, Jun 26, 1:36pm
Notice SC having sales too biug discounts2 in past monthin small towns there istoo manyretailparts stores sowho will blink first !Repco toodear, same part that SC sells for $15they sell for $50normal price .

patiki1, Jun 26, 2:25pm
Pre SCA days repco never had specials.

faa_luke, Jun 26, 3:40pm
Only time I go to Repco is if they have a big special on oil I use. Any other time I go to SCA as they are much better value. They aren't known as Ripco for no reason.

bigracket, Jun 26, 4:24pm
I dont think they were on special anywhere, was just a standard bike battery, not sure exactly which model. Not really sure if same brand either, but dont really care. they were of comparable quality brands at least. I was not going to buy it cos i did not really have enough money at the time and thought Ill pop into rippers and see, was pretty surprised.

mrfxit, Jun 26, 5:18pm
Found it the other way around today
Ford Laser suspension bush at Sca was $104 / Repco was $72
Budget disk pads for the same. Sca $45 / Repco $28

bigeye2, Jun 26, 5:45pm
use to use repco.BNT better prices and product here

bae13, Jun 26, 5:49pm
it will be hard for repco to go down, they are owned by exigo group, that owns alot of the companies that feed repco, appco, ashdown-ingram parts

roys351, Jun 26, 5:52pm
yep bnt for me too

mugenb20b, Jun 26, 5:54pm
Same here. I once found a brand new cylinder head on TM for $720. I went to Repco and their price was nearly $800. And I asked the manager if he can give me a better price than $720, no problem. I got it for $670 + a "free" head gasket set and head bolts.

xacoon, Jun 26, 5:55pm
had a mate that worked at repco, so if I wanted anything I would just give her the coin and get staff discount on it. REDICULOUS the markup they have on stuff. some items I was getting 80% off. sparkplugs for a v8! 12 bucks thanks for coming.

jason_247, Jun 26, 6:02pm
sca still do price beats

personally i like bnt but they dont have one in taupo

sca seem to have a great range of tools now
repco only have that cheap 6 month warrenty crap
