Yes but he said Knee down is over rated. So in saying that he has said that it is a pointless exercise , meaning moto gp riders are wasting their time! He never mentioned the tyres. lol

It was a wet race on sunday and the bikes had a full treded tire. They still seemed to be getting the knee down near the tarmac.

Its probaly over rated as a road skill I would think, but on a track it may make you faster. But as I said ive seen guys blitz knee downers sitting up and on something you asume he couldnt. Rider talent is a big thing.

the wets are so incredible that they are only 10% slower than the dry times
they also require learning to use - because they are so unlike anything that you can get for the road
in the wet they survive only thru lightning reactions
"knowledge" & "experience" can get you so far - but riding is an "in the moment" thing - if your not feeling hot, dont go at your hardest

Is #1 racing!
Yes!Ok, knee down may (and it is most certainly not a hard and fast rule) have merits for allowing a more upright bike when traction is already at limits.
No!Then why does he want to knee down, probably "hur dur hur because da racers doz it so it means I must have mad skillzzz!"
In my opinion the riding that we see in gymkhanas is far and away a higher level of "true motorcycle zen" than getting your knee down on your way to the shops.

your comparing high & low speed riding
low speed skills are different to high speed balance, positioning & timing

Forget about getting your knee down for now, if you go out on a track day invest ingood quality tyres, gear etcand listen to your instructors, then just go for it!Your knee will touch down eventually, the more you think about trying to get your knee down the slower you will be.

Meybe If youve never managed to slide a knee yet, trying on a large heavy expensive machine might not be a wise move. Its not an easy thing to do on a modest bike with geat tyres.

Man, when I was racing production bikes like H2, Z1, GS1000S etc, there was so little ground clearance that we ground off our pegs/pipes/alternators without our knees touching anything. Except maybe the half-tyres in the esses on Ruapuna. Ouch!Just watch some YouTube clips of Graeme Crosby (whose laces I am not worthy to tie!)http://www.youtube.com/watch!v=8eFYmSYpPYA

You need to go faster. Seriously! If you've been leaning over far enough you'll have seen your precious knee rushing past the road with only a few inches betweeen. Then it's only a matter of dropping the knee the extra to start grazing the surface and hope like hell there's no drain covers coming up! Try practising on slower, 40-50 Km corners first. I used to get my knee down occasionally while dispatch riding in London but not any more.

I agree 100% with kazbanz; best course I ever did was a day at Taupo with Aron Slight and Freddy Merkle. The tips you get from thoses guys are worth their weight in gold, they sure can ride fast!

I had an rs250 before hand.

so you think i should you the same technique! i thought it may be a bit different because of the added weight.

I know very little about today's motorbikes, but would have thought getting your knee down would be a whole lot easier than getting your leg over.

If you dont skin your knees or scrape your leathersthen your notleaningfar enough

I started racing bikes 38 years ago on an RD350 and still race off road and on track days. I have looked at instruction on youtube, ( I think it is British Superbike Magazine put videos on there ) and I have ridden many different bikes fast. I have never mastered the knee down technique and don't corner any slower because of it. I have now ride a Ducati Hypermotard which is a sit up bike and suits me, but I also have an MV Augusta which I tuck into rather than knee down style. Do some track days and get a bit of instruction if you really want to perfect the technique.
