i started on a 125cc suzuki, then as i perfected my driving i acquired a triumph trident 750cc. Be very careful out there though, a lot of bad car drivers out there.

Did you get it this morning! At the empty car lot beside freedom Suzuki!, I thought I saw somebody wobbling around the cones there about 11am this morning.

you right about that, ive lost 2 good mates from bike accidents, i was kinda lucky, only a couple of spills, but at low speed. Be careful out there

Yep - but i'd finished by that stage - could have been the guy after me!

The 1 that fits you and is most forgiving when you drop it.

Three good starting points. Hyosung 250 Comet Yamaha 225 Scorpio Suzuki GN250 All good upright riding positions which offer ease of handling and great visibility. Also all three available at reasonable rates which is a good thing as you don't want to invest too much in your first bike. Save it for the next one.

I agree Berg. I just test rode a Hyosung for a mate who ended up buying it. Great little bike but once a rider has some experience and is ready to move up, I believe this bike will set them up very well for that. Easy to handle, quite predictable and cornered really nicely.
OP, if I can give one piece of advice.Treat EVERYONE on the road as though they want to kill you. That has saved my life (or at least saved me from serious injury) many times. When you are riding up to a car parked on the side of the road, just think "How are they going to try and kill me!" A little old lady U-turned right in front of me once, and because I was expecting her to, I was able to avoid hitting her. She learnt some brand new words that day.
I hope I haven't made riding sound scary, because it's really great fun. Good luck, and happy and safe riding.

Yep. sorry about your loss mate that sucks. I gave it up because i was always thinking in the back of my mind "what if it's me today"!

fully endorse these words, My bike days were the best, but i now like 4 wheels under me.I was also taught that everyone is out to get you !

I must admit, I ride with eyes everywhere, not just in the front and back of my head. In saying that, I wouldn't give up riding even after a few minor and one major bike crashes. Another thing for the OP to consider with a new bike is the physical size and weight plus riding style that suits you. I am cursed with short legs (the council keeps building curbs to close to my bum) so that dictated what I ended up with as a bike. There are some I would love to ride but when on I cannot comfortably put my feet on the ground. Head for a bike shop and start sitting on seats. You will soon find a position you like. Beware, the "racing crouch" is fun for short blasts but sore wrists and necks get at you when doing long rides.

If you've got money to spend. Theres a new Honda CBR250R coming out. $7499 retail. Looks the bees knees.
When I was a learner i had a zxr250 91. That was horrible to ride compared to what ive ridden since. When I did my full i hired a vtr250 (2000ish). That was just so comfortable and while not as powerful as the zxr, I wish I had that as my learners bike

Good on ya, may I also recommend invest in the best safety gear you can afford nothing like having a wound with rocks smeared in them. It can be the difference between life and death. Play safe and always keep those eyes open in the back of your head.

Totally

Im looking to spend somewhere between $5000-$7000 for everything. Would like a new bike - but i dont know what things are worth at all!

Totally agree here. Jeans and a puffer jacket may look cool to some but they won't save your ass when it all turns bad. Mrs Berg came off at 70kph a few months back and due to really good gear all she suffered was a bruised knee. Good cordura or even leather gear can be brought quite cheap on here and it is worth every dollar. Helmet Jacket with armour Gloves Pants with knee and hip armour Bike boots All a must have not a nice to have

^^ You don't get a second chance at life to try again so do whats right the first time, bikers need all the protection they can, its not like a cage exists around us to absorb impacts

if you got the money then sweet!
but your 250 is going to dissapoint as soon as your used to it. . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . .& get to ride something decent
is suggest getting at least a 400 to begin with like i did. but if its a 250 your after then the ZZR 250 are great (for a 250)
you wont be wanting to keep it long so a 250 is wasted money imo - but hey its yours so just get what you like the feel of - its the most important thing in a short term purchase
hydroman08,

Short term is 2 years though right!

2 years! I know guys who were sick of 250s in two weeks.

Depends on your age and experiance. Mrs Berg went from no bike licence to full in 9 months. She has a lot of emergency service driving experiance though and they took that into consideration along with her being over 25. A lot of the laws reguarding bike licencing are due to change next year so you might want to get a "cheapie" for the short future. They may open learner bikes up to a bit bigger but they will ban "high performance" bikes including some 250s
