350 vs 360 vs 351 V8s

I would say the 350 at least has all the parts and mods you'd ever need because they're common as mud.

The 360 seems to be underrated, the 351 similar would apply to 350!

No doubt there's folk here with far more knowledge tech-wise than me, but as for unbiased, well, don't hold your breath!

360 aside, it's why I drive a 500. :-)

351 from the 70's

windsoror cleveland

one had the better block - the other had the better head

302's are close to the max size a V8 should be

bentcoupe, May 25, 9:47am
351 windsor had a different firing order to the others

Any V8 is cool! But the award for best sound has to be the Fords.

300 cube was the big block 6, more torque than your mother in law.

xacoon, May 25, 10:14am
yeh had fun with that, rebuilt a 351 windsor, didn't realise the cam I had ordered was 302 firing order. I had a sweet running "lumpy as" 4 cylinder 351 windsor till I realised.

the 360 has a longer rod & their castings had a higher nickle content & in std form can make more power. chevs are cheaper due to being more popular & the availabilty of aftermarket parts makes them affordable to low budget racers. Fords make a lot of noise but i've generally found them lacking. the clevo is definately the power horse in that camp.

re 327s would revquicker due to shorter stroke they were like 2 4s glued together and was popular
but as to the main heading 351 by far

xacoon, May 25, 10:35am

The Clevo is a bit of a dog if you ask me. Nice head design (thanks to Zora Duntov) but too big & cumbersome (hence why the Yanks refer to it as a bigblock) & has a crappy oiling system. Who in their right mind would oil the front main before the rear main. the load is on the rear main, that's why it's called "priority main oiling".
Windsor heads suffer due to their tiny exhaust ports.
Havnt had much to do with Chryslers, have only recond. 2 in my life.

phalanax, May 25, 10:16pm
Im gonna say the 360 was a better engine and mention the hemispherical head design that made it breathe better further im gonna back that up by saying the 440 was the record holder for that and the following decade not too mention the transmissions they also paired to these engines. superior .lol

dcoupe, May 26, 2:16am
Firing order is not really different, its just the way the manufacturers number the cyls, Draw the patterns out & you will 'see' what I mean, early 289/302 is same as Chev SB, & Cleveland/351order is 'flipped' from front to rear. Cylinder numbers are only for us humans, engine doesnt know whats written in its lid!

attitudedesignz, May 26, 2:25am
Agree 100%. Had a few 302 SBCs in LC-LJ & LH-UC 'ranas. Has to be one of the best sounding small blocks of any brand at full noise.

Also waiting for the people who say they didn't exist lol.

I drive a 400! But I've always thought 351 clevo did a good job on my trike!

cuda.340, May 26, 5:01am

xacoon, May 26, 6:33am

1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2=the only Ford worthy of the name.

pnh4, May 26, 10:16am
What! 670HP for a factory 302 get real mate.!

dcoupe, May 26, 8:02pm
Tried to upload a dwg on my advert, but cant be done,
Grab a bit of paper & pen, draw the cylinder layout ( For Ford 1234 on top line, 5678 on bottom line then connect the numbers as per firing orders, note pattern for 13726548 is mirror image of 15426378, do the same for chevy remembering they number 2468 on top line & 1357 on bottom, pattern is same as Ford 15426378 ), dont do this at the pub, you will be sooo busy explaining it that you wont have time to drink.

cuda.340, May 27, 5:46am
probably from the race factory, definately NOT street car factory. 5 litre V8 racing started with the Trans Am series in the late 60's early 70's. they were up in the 400HP area on a single 4bbl. the 5 litre in the supercar series is injected with computerised ignition. these cars are in the 600hp range.

attitudedesignz, May 27, 5:53am
Chevrolet produced a special 302 cu in (4.9 L) (referred to as 5.0 L) engine for Trans Am racing from 1967??

lookoutas, May 27, 6:29am
The Boss 302 was only 290hp
