havnt read the other posts but isnt it 10%! e.g 50kph zone max is 55kph. 100kph zone 110kph limit. i know for a fact you can get a ticket for doing 55 in a 50, i got a ticket last week.$30 lol

Would a GPS be more reliable than a suspect speedo ,IF so then use one to"calibrate" your speedo or borrow one.

Give me one reason why some magic number excluding all other conditions, car type, tyre type, alignment, brake condition, brake compound, rotor type, car weight, tyre temp, driver attention, reaction time and all that makes you a danger. Give me one goddamn reason why I should believe it boils down to 5km/h for every single truck n trailer, fiat multipla, ford falcon and ariel atom on the road. It is something that cannot be quantified like that, the lower they throw those tolerances the more they can throw speed as a "factor" in their crash statistics and peddle more bullshit back at the public.
Now I don't care if you are for or against speeding, there is something wrong with 5km/h. There is no way when I'm focusing hard on nana lane changing and other dolts that I should have to glue to the speedo, speed is a guide for the conditions not a magic number most people can keep it under 115 or so and settle back to 100 after a hill or whatever. This would be less of a factor as i know in some other countries they are harder on it HOWEVER most other countries don't have a force as bad as ours, ours is totally shocking for response and emergencies. Something is wrong in this picture and it isn't the guy doing 105km/h.

LOL Kaz, yea same for my 88 Surf. Spose to have 29's but got 31's on it & the speedo is consistent with the roadside displays all over the north island

I tend to follow that thought, however there is ONE bit of logic/sense to a tightly controlled speed limit (as opposed to having one at all, that's another argument all together I'm happy to wax lyrical on if anyone wants to hear it):
Anyway, a high % (I forget what it is) of accidents happen at intersections. One of the contributing factors here is the doubt around the approaching vehicle's speed. If you could remove that doubt, and the car pulling out always knew the maximum speed the approaching vehicle is doing (this applies in town and open road) then you have removed a contributing factor to one of (if not the) major causes of accidents on our roads. Not gonna get into whether or not people think this is valid. The fact is it's in the heads of those making decisions.

smac. maybe they should put up a few of those speed displays at intersections!

Yes but would you want more distractions at a intersection!

True ,in AdeiladeAussiethey found the fixed speed cameras were way out of accuracy & had to remove them all on the city ring roads . Funnily enough the accident rate dropped remarkedly . This was several years ago . reported in Wheelsmag .

Ummm.how can we know "the maximum speed the approaching vehicle is doing".unless every car is fitted with a radar! We all know the LEGAL maximum speed, the trouble is, some drive well above this speed and others drive well below, which in my mind is more annoying.

You're missing the main point here - my post was on why the Police want to rigidly enforce the limit. The perceived outcome of this is that people will then abide by it.

Wof standards used to state .Speedo has to be accurate within 10% .Back when i used to issue.Dont think it has changed! We used to drive them then not just look on the way to the pit.If this is still the way it states dont pay!

speeding is a soft target and a easy revenue earner for the police - truth is the 10 k an hour tolerance was costing them money as a majority were sticking to it, so reduce it to 5k an hour tolerance and pump that revenue back up!

those digital speed reading signs on busy streets are good for checking your cars speed. My 1994 Legacy reads bang on the button, but my ex's 2004 or 2005 Legacy reads about 55km/hr on the speedo when the actual speed is 50km/hr

Who says they are accurate though!
