Hi Guys, Did mums thermostat today, (nissan sunny, 1.5, 97) It was reading high on the gauge(sp!). Any how it was a 78 that I replace with a 74. Fluid levels perfect, but temp still reads just under the 3/4 mark. Anyone know where these should sit as a genral rule!

factory gauges dont show you what temp the engine is,all they do is show you temp difference, ie 2 cars of the same make and model may have completly different readings on the gauges but will both be operating at the same temp. Bad idea changing the thermostat for a different one when you have no idea of the actual temp its operating at.

Very slight it just looks like condensation though cos its so slight and just around the filler cap, the car barely gets used from one month to the next. I would be very surprised of it was head gasket, def not other signs of head issues. and def has not been overheated (like boiled or anything)

I only know as I has a similar experience. my ex's rav4 ran like dogs balls and the although the temp gauge did go up to halfway, it would move between 1/4 and a 1/2 when driving. I checked it out and found the motor had the thermostat removed.so I replaced it. whenI did this the gauge went to FULL hot but it was a stuffed gauge, the temp was actually fine. the previous owner must have removed the thermo when the gauge started reading hot, as a result it ran like balls as it was cold, even though the gauge said 1/4 to 1/2
