I kinda maybe just a little bit got one today. Needs a tidy up but makes the right noise. My dad knows more than me but anyway is there a massive thing I should be looking out for! Got a group A front and some rust in the boot but I'll clean that all up and treat it properly. 270,000km but I'm not worried cause they as far as I know don't give huge issues with miledge, recon steering rack I'm yet to install, shift kit, cam and the usual bits n bods that get messed with. Bit faded but it is red so to be expected.

*Waits for opposing go holden, what a pile and the VP was no good comments*

bigracket, May 16, 4:53pm
Nice score, these were really nice when they came out. under braked a bit but cool car. Lucky sod.

pollymay, May 16, 4:58pm
First instersection I came to I stood on picks and "oh hello they don't stop".

skyline_guy_r34, May 16, 5:02pm
Sorry mate, that be a VN you have there

skyline_guy_r34, May 16, 5:07pm
Thats strange, I had a vn v8 (factory) calais, and I never had a problem with brakes, quite the opposite I thought they were very very good.

pollymay, May 16, 5:13pm
Lol shows you how well I know my designations on these things

skyline_guy_r34, May 16, 5:19pm
No probs, Know what setup the exhaust is! My old 304 had headers, middle muffler, and end muffler, all with 2.5inch piping and that sounded very dirty

guider1, May 16, 5:29pm
Throw that pod filter in the bin & get an original airbox & dont buy rubbish cross-drilled DBA rotors. they are junk. Cheap upgrade is Skyline 4-pot calipers.

pollymay, May 16, 5:30pm
Has headers and is almost straight back to a small resonator then out the back, has a bit o rumble to it with the cam, I'll check for leaks and bad joins on the lift next time I'm at the shop. I just needed a good tow vehicle for my racecar so brakes will need a look at along with that steering but I maintain my cars well so it's no big deal. A fiat punto cannot tow my racecar end of lol

pollymay, May 16, 5:32pm
Yeah was planning on ridding that air filter, I've got the bench polisher and am testing some bits of alloy at the moment for the cleanup. Is there an airbox off another model that is better or is the stock fine! I'm from toyota land not commie land, don't know the ins and outs yet

skyline_guy_r34, May 16, 5:34pm
Nice should sound sweet. Whats your racecar! Ive just bought a racecar for racing next season but I went the sensible horrible option and bought a AU Coon to tow with, would have been nice to have an ol 304 like yours to tow with.

pollymay, May 16, 5:41pm
Some prelude I picked up with a stupid big turbo, going to rally it but the weight of that with the tandem trailer plus tools n tyres the old windom would be having issues, or at least I wouldn't be that comfortable with it.

grangies, May 16, 6:20pm
I'm not a fan of any Australian built cars, but the photo's of it look great considering the age of the car.

Keep it clean and don't thrash it all the time, and you'll hopefully have another 100,000 trouble free K's.

im_andrew, May 16, 9:11pm
VN-VP-VR-VS all run the same airbox. Holden also sell an over the radiator cold air intake kit for them (intended for VS supercharged V6es) but is easily adaptable to other models

guider1, May 16, 9:20pm
An HSV airbox off the likes of an SV5000, Group A, SV200 Statesman, VP200 Clubbie etc are alot better but hard to find. I have one hanging on my wall off an SV200 Statey I owned a while back. Bought it cheap dereg (basically paid the storage that was owed), kept the engine & onsold the shell.

vjregal770, May 16, 9:30pm
My old VS SS Commy had all the right ingredients for a great car. Had the look, the sound, lots of kit, handled well, reliable as the next day.

If only they'd build them right.

guider1, May 16, 9:49pm
I've owned a VN SS, VP SS, VR SS, VP200 Clubbie, VQ Statey, HSV SV200 Statey plus multiple other VN-VS V6/8 models & cant say I've had anything major go wrong with any of them. even at over 300000km. Still own the VP SS, VP200, VR V8 wagon plus 2 VR V6 wagons & will be buying a WH Caprice or Statesman or possibly a Grange shortly.

Looks like a great tow car to me, keep the maintenance up and you should get some good life out of it. A trans cooler would be an inexpensive mod for towing duties. Well worth checking the cooling system as well, at that mileage pulling the radiator and having it cleaned and tested would be cheap insurance.

guider1, May 17, 7:59am
I consider them to be cheap to run as well, moreso on a trip though. Not out of the way to get 540-600km out of the 80 litre tank.

pollymay, May 17, 11:50am
It wasn't bad on the way home, very easy to speed cause it just burbles past 100. I was learning to hang back from everyone so I could coast on the throttle

200sx, May 17, 5:16pm
Ahhh, the VP SS. The first V8 I ever got to drive was one of these. Took it for a fang from Cooke Howlison in Dunedin - did some stupid speeds up and over the Kilmog. I tell ya, when you had spent all your young life driving Datsuns, Austins and Minis, a V8 was a different world. I owned a low mileage VN SS a while back. Nice car, but the VP SS would be my "old school" SS of choice. Not many nice ones left these days.

gooddealz2, May 17, 9:55pm
I think in Dunedin there's only about another 3 VP's.Could be wrong but you certainly don't drive past another all the time.No shortage of SS if you take every model into account.mind you they are almost twenty years old now.Ours does 200+ km's a week and is used daily.I try and keep it looking good but first it's got to be at home which is a bit tricky with shift workers.

pollymay, May 17, 10:46pm
Yeah it's strange cause I've had some nice cars before and the last one was a pretty nice looking turbo mr2 and no one bats an eyelid but cruising in town in this I get a couple heads turning now I've given it a slight polish and settled into driving round town a little. I guess people can relate to it better than exotics and oddities.

I have obsessive compulsive engine bay disorder and have been non stop polishing and painting little things bit by bit. Vacuumed out the dog hair, some sheepskin seat covers, fixing the headliner and loose things, tyre shine. Gotta put it on the lift and clean the underside and check for rear main leaks and stuff soon. My dad knows these motors cause he is an old V8 guy so he knows how to do the rope main seals the right way first time everytime and stuff like that. I expected him to almost disown me for getting a holden but he likes it.

jkm, May 18, 5:04am
I think VP will become a Holden classic,They werent out for very long.A bit nicer than the VN and quite distinct from the VR and VS. How much did uou pay!
Better buy your Holden flag for the V8s LOL.

pollymay, May 18, 1:19pm
I traded it for my turbo mr2 which I'd rebuilt and yada yada It's probably still in my listings till it runs out.
