http://www.flickr.com/photos/59880708@N05/5551882163/ Note the ones coming from the rocker cover are now new, i got rid of the old pipes, and the one coming out of the back of the manifold loop is the hose to the brake booster, and the clear one is the Vac guage ( which reads steady at "idle") and the little black pipe goes to the vac advance

Have a look here .This a Stromberg equiped GT6 engine with a PCV system.
Not sure if the SU ones had them or not as the hoses went onto the carbs I recall, is yours a SU carbed engine!
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID008001
On checking your pics .yep SU's alright so no PCV unless there's a valve inside the rocker cover!
White smoke though points me where I originally said .brake booster!
Un couple and plug the brake vac hose run the engine and see if that changes the way the engine runs.
Not an automatic so that's one less vac to sort!

ginga4lyfe, May 10, 9:17pm
yep SU carbied , cant you see the link i posted ! it should lead to a photo of my car and how its setup ! i think that GT6 is the early ones i dont think they used those manifolds for long!

ema1, May 10, 9:20pm
Yep I did see the pics and edited my last post saying so.

ginga4lyfe, May 10, 9:21pm
Nah no valve in the rocker cover, But i will be disconnecting the brake booster , so yeah i guess we will find out int the morning! haha

ema1, May 10, 9:24pm
Is that hose to the front carb from the rocker 'T' junction still split at carb end as in the pic! Being SU carbs .they have small vac bleeds in them to suck the vapour from the rocker cover! Good luck with it all I'm flying off to the N.I tomorrow on annual leave for a couple of weeks.yeee haa

ginga4lyfe, May 10, 9:28pm
Nope, I replaced those hoses with new ones, that old stuff was falling apart and knew it wa gunna be a problem so i bought 1 meter of the closest fitting hose i could find ( just happened to be heater hose too ) so i replaced that plus some bits of water hoses like that green peice( in the pic ) that had perished

ema1, May 10, 9:30pm
Good on ya I'll check in .in a couple of weeks, away on annual leave to the N.I flying up there tomorrowyipeeeee !

bigracket, May 10, 10:21pm
So Ginga, you going through break fluid!

bigracket, May 10, 10:24pm
And what EXACTLY did you have done to the head!

ginga4lyfe, May 11, 12:39am
the head was leaking out the frost plug that had rotted through, so removed the head. Removed the rocker assembly, skimmed, lapped the valves and seats, had the new plug installed, replaced gaskets and reassembled the lot, torqued up the head according to book too to 90 nm as auto data reckons from 85 to 110, then reset valve clearance

pfemstn, May 11, 5:59am
i did my time in the triumph era and have worked on plenty over the years! no one else has mentioned Bardahl, as stated in my first post it will make white smoke, brake fluid will emit a strong smell if its that bad to cause smoking, also will empty the brake reservoir rather quickly! a lot of the above posts obviously know nothing about triumphs!

bigracket, May 11, 11:11am
/\ Yip thats pretty much what I said. lol

ginga4lyfe, May 11, 1:07pm
yeah some also dont know that if you own a triumph that you are either silly in the head or, really like messing around with old english cars , Im a bit of both, so yeah i pulled the booster valve, no traces of oil in the booster or the line, also disconnected the rocker cover line to carbs and no difference either, so yeah it must be the bardrahl stuff, which is annoying, coz if just put another 20 liters of fuel inwith a splash of that stuff, so it will take a while before that runs through ( Im jokeing, the car drinks fuel like i drink cola on a hot day )

bigracket, May 11, 6:16pm
Cool, ginga, let us know how you get on when the fuel is sorted.

108895, May 12, 8:01pm
put a match to it

ginga4lyfe, May 13, 12:00am
Your car first, if you dont have one buy one over 1500 bucks first then set light to that, otherwise "you are soo funny!" /Sarcasm

snoopy221, May 13, 12:13am
Dude is she had zee good fanga and gotz ova de white smokin.COLD temp gauge thermostat all gooooddz! bra!
mm! Ow many K's when zee head offskied and.ow long ead off for!
I.E. REMOVE CYL HEAD ON A 290 MILE TRUMP AND LEAVE ER OFF FOR SEXY MNTHS AND YA'LL SE E THE AIRAND TOP RINGS AND UM.SMOKIN.

snoopy221, May 13, 12:24am
its even at 160 psi on all cylinders, but yeah the backfiring was sorted a while ago, it wasn't the timing apparently the vacuum on the air box assembly was needed for the SU carbs to operate properly( and not backfire ) Could you please explain that point in english-also please possibly-if it's no biggie just tell us it's an automatic or a manual.okies.

tractor9, May 13, 6:19pm
What the f ck are you trying to say!

bigracket, May 13, 6:33pm
Lol snoop, have missed your illegible posts !

ginga4lyfe, May 13, 8:16pm
Ill try to explain this one since i dont understand the previous one, I was saying that the rings cant be cracked as the compression is all even and good at 160 PSI , the second part , the car was back firing and some had questioned as to whether the timing was correct, it was correct i found the cause to the back firing was the lack of the air filter assembly, the third part It is Manual , It has the 4 speed with Over drive gearbox

ginga4lyfe, May 13, 8:22pm
Ok ill try decipher the text anyways , you mentioned how long the head was off ! It was off for 5 days, I cleaned out the minute rust in the bored with a little but of oil on a rag and slowly turned over a few times to make sure it wasnt in any bad way before i re-assembled, the part about miles, I would like to know that myself, the Odometer isnt the most accurate one iv seen, its also a little hard to figure out via carjam, and the temperature thing she comes up to temp nicely, though she sits just above the 1 third mark most the time, and the "fanga" part, I dont know if she has ever been "fanged" but its absolutely possible

jmma, May 13, 8:50pm
Sounds like you may have cleaned the tops of the pistons, should always leave the edges alone,

snoopy221, May 13, 9:39pm
Okay so we have a warm engine at operating temperature-not one running too cold and simply producing water smoke from inneficient combustion while cold.
And we have a manual which rules out it sucking aouto fluid from the trans-[most of them were manual kick down borg warners-not vacuum modulated anyway-LOL]
However a high mileage engine sitting with the head off outside in dampnes can lose it's rings easily-shperodial graphite and cast rings don't like being exposed to air sometimes.
As to the carbs-S U;s don't need vacuum-they have a piston lifting hole in the airbox gasket face.if running a tad lean then the addition of the airbox with the intake air resistance would remove the backfiring.
Also was the head straightness tested!
And was there any noticeable lip in the bore!
