Been quoted a ridiculous amount to replace the hoodlining in my camry wagon, as the velour has collapsed. Is it possible to just remove the material part of it!Feels like there's a thin layer of foam(knackered) under the fabric part.! Anyone done a homer on these!Cos I'm going to lol

Good luck, you were quoted that amount for a reason, go back after you stuff it up and the price will double to fix it.

doubt it - they said they'd take it out - scrape the glue off the roof (hoodlining isn't glued to the roof, it's held up by the mouldings and lights!) and glue some felt directly to the metal!Nothing that you can really stuff up.

Why was it so expensive(how much) for a rough job!.

I'm a qualified auto upholsterer. And I own a camry wagon. IMHO the headlining is made from some sort of thin pressed fibre board, with a thin layer of foam and then the cloth. What happens is the cloth slowly falls away from the foam since the foam perishes with age and heat. If you are any good with your hands, you should be able to - very carefully and with an extra pair of hands to help - remove the fibre board by taking out the grab handles and all the plastic panels that surround the roof. Be careful when prizing out the clips that hold these panels in place - clips are plastic and brittle and easy to break. You can get a panel removal tool from supa cheap that you slide in behind the panels and lever out the clips. Once you've done this, there may be other clips or screws holding the fibre board in place. take care as the fibre board is rather fragile. Once you have the fibre board on the bench, very carefully scrape away the old foam without disturbing the surface of the fibre board. Now buy some ADOS spray adhesive or similar (aerosole can). It's easier to just glue the cloth to the fibre board without foam, or if you can get hold of a sheet of very thin foam from an upholsterer's (6mm), you could give this a go if you're keen. Easier also if you get some new cloth but with care the old cloth can be re-used if it's in good condition. But you'll need to get any of the old foam off the cloth first. Now position the cloth in place over the fibre board, then fold half of it back. Lightly spray this half and the fibre board with glue. When tacky, you can glue the cloth in place, with maybe two people holding it taut while you smooth it down (use a fluffy paint roller to avoid finger marks). Then fold the remaining half back and repeat the process. Quite tricky to do properly eh! Good luck.

Do you mind telling us what you were quoted! I did heaps of range rover headlinings when I was an apprentice, they were done the same way.

Year what blue says ! The good news is its a wagon, you can pull the whole lot out the back door. you can buy the cloth "foam backed" prob for about 100 odd bucks, and I would allow about half a day to do so really price wise I would want 350 to 400 cash to do the job so if thats what you been quoted thats pretty damn fair.

mopar63 "hey Mottly do what I did , just got out the staple gun and stapled it back up ,easy cheap , rough haha" That would look like crap it's worth at least trying to do the job properly!

LMAO!Cheers all.and mopar63.knew you'd come up with some rough fix it lol!Man, they're a mess under the velour. Our local guy quoted $560 to just glue some felt directly to the metal on the roof - rip imo.Just for today I tacked it back on with a glue gun - should hold it for a couple of days. (till I get rid of this damn flu and do a better job!)Bluecambridge - I see what you mean now I've had a decent look at it. Bit worried about breaking the mouldings at the top of the doors - they look like a biartch to take off. The upholsterer I talked to said 'we don't guarantee that we won't break the mouldings'.!! .

i don't know if i have ever done a camry headlining but i don't think Toyota plastics break easy. Just wiggle it a bit to see which direction it has to be pulled in and they should pop off easy. you can get a thin wide instrument in behind the trim, next to a retaining clip and give it a helping lever. I can sell you the correctt foam backed fabric, and glue to do the job, $560 for a rough job. most shop charge around $400 to do it properly.
mottly,
Apr 29, 1:23pm
wow, I was quoted $560 for them to take it out and glue some felt to the metal of the roof! That's the local idea of a 'proper' job lol
