Ok, so I pulled the dizzy, stripped it, found its mechanical advance was sticky,so cleaned and freed it up, and put it together and static re timed the car, now I gotta wait Nd get the crabs back to see if its any different, I also checked the valve timing at tdc the no 6 valves were rocking as they should so I doubt thats the problem, ill keep ya up to date otherwise

ok I think i got rid of the back firing, Finally, only now the car is sluggish and crappy idle, so. I gotta work on that mixture and balance and she will be fine:P

ok im an idiot, you lot probably already knew that, but I tuned the carbs with out the airfilter assembly, was runnign rich and sluggish, so i pulled the assembly off and re tuned to 2 turns out and fired up . then back firing continued, so I thought. it must be runnging too lean. I wander if the air bx assembly fixes that. so i bolted it back up to the carbs, and now she is running absolutly fine. almost 100% correct air\fuel mixture too, sheesh. this problem could have been solved ages ago ( though i wouldnt have known about the blown head gasket! )

new filters next week - and then retune it again lol, yep should have known, was a common error when the SU and Strombergs were on every second british car. they use vac to operate the jet, and not very much vac, anything that effects vac by even a half inch will effect the jets so probably not your fault alone, we should have mentioned it too

the more you know! Ohwell its leasons learnt , also when stuffing around my uncle piped up " one of your plugs is misfiring " and turns out, it was, not that i noticed much, he was panicing saying that it sounded like cylinders 3 and 4 were cross flowing, but a quick compression test ruled that out, so, on saturday its new plugs, Dizzy cap and rotor and air filter, atleased its small things needing attending too

cross flowing! or cross firing!, check the leads are well separated, and recheck the cap for an arc track between those contacts again those blue leads, they are good while they are good, but sheer hell when they start playing up, they're intermittent with their issues ad damm hard to actually find the cause, unless you have an upmarket sound system that is very sensitive to I.F, then see if you can find a set of solids ( wire centered leads)

ok all done, new plugs cap and rotor and now a nice powerful ride , running a little rich, but thats no problem now, and a bit of white smoke, but thats to be expected at there was a bit of water put into the engine that couldnt be drained, so she just needs more license and a long drive , then reset the tappets again and she will be fine for the next few years!
