What is it with tan/beige interiors?

We've been looking to replace our vehicle with something in the 2004-2006 era and most have tan interiors. To me they look like puke though the car!
And so impractical with children!
Anyone feel the same way!

nathanmac, Feb 9, 2:39pm
As opposed to bright vibrant grey!

chatsmom, Feb 9, 2:41pm
What cars have those tones! My present car has a blue/grey interior. Grey I think I can live with but not 'beige'.

thejazzpianoma, Feb 9, 2:41pm
You are looking at Japanese car's arn't you!
They have all the interior styling taste of a blind snail.

thejazzpianoma, Feb 9, 2:43pm
I suggest you consider something Italian, not only can they design interiors their engineering is superb as well.

chatsmom, Feb 9, 2:43pm
Got no options there but japanese - 3 kids and a limited budget!
You're so right about the taste element though :(

johnf_456, Feb 9, 2:43pm
Don't mention that m word, #4

thejazzpianoma, Feb 9, 2:44pm
Of course you have options!
The non-Japanese cars are the best value of all and many have the lowest running costs. What size/type of vehicle are you looking for!

Oh and how much is this limited budget!

kazbanz, Feb 9, 2:47pm
chatsmom--EXACTLYwhich make/model are you looking at!
The reason I ask is that yep beige or variations of that were in vougue in the early to mid 2000's in Japan--so we are seeing a lot of em here as second hand imports.
But all is not lost. For example the bluebird silphy does sometimes come with a grey or dark grey interior. The honda odyssey sometimes comes with a dark grey. The Sunny is usually grey. etc.
Tell me what you want and I'll tell you if in my experience they come with a different interior

thejazzpianoma, Feb 9, 2:49pm
Those cars are still beige at heart though.

(Just winding Kaz up, actually if you HAVE to have something horrible and Japanese he is the man to tell you which might suit. he has nearly as many of them on his lot as he has children)

chatsmom, Feb 9, 2:54pm
I will admit I'm going to be a bit picky as if I'm going to have it for the next 10 odd years then I've got to get what I will like, yes!
So, it has to be a 7 seater (though 2 of those can be more of those dummy seats), no silver exterior for me, husband doesn't want white but I don't mind.
Its bad enough for me that I have to have an auto for the family car too!
Really don't want beige interior either.
Mileage around 80k, budget to $17k. Looking for good fuel economy as fuel prices will go up.
Does my car exist!

thejazzpianoma, Feb 9, 3:02pm
The most practical, economical, safest, best value and advanced vehicle is the VW Touran. Its available from about 12K and is literally half the cost to run as some of the other options you will see around, yet its still plenty quick. The reason for the economy is its miles ahead technology wise than any of the opposition. However, its not very inspiring to look at from the outside. Both diesel and petrol options are great BTW. Also very reliable.

Renault Espace, with the right engine is economical, lovely and comfortable and safe. A good larger option.

Peugeot 307 7 seat wagon,
Very funky, practical, not too large, very nice looking. Has a poor reputation for reliability in NZ but this is exagerated. A really nice example if maintained should be an O.K reliability bet. The key thing is regular transmission maintenance.

Volvo XC70, wagon with pop up occasional seats. Lovely and comfortable, excellent value for money. Surprisingly good on fuel for its size.

chatsmom, Feb 9, 3:07pm
Thanks for those options. I don't care about 'inspiring' as I've been driving a Nissan Serena for the last 10 years! :)

thejazzpianoma, Feb 9, 3:19pm
That being the case I can't recommend the Touran enough. The technology (which gives it great reliability/economy/performanc-
e) is better than what many brand new cars have.
They are a supurb vehicle, lovely to drive and so very well engineered. Nice long maintenance intervals too. Just be aware that anything not Japanese will be hated upon by some very vocal people in the industry who don't have a clue. This is the joy's of living in a country that rely's on Japanese imports for almost all of its used car stock.

So to head off a few untruths, VW is the second biggest manufacturer of cars in the world (shortly will be the biggest) this means that parts are easily available and very inexpensive (Yes even in NZ)

There is nothing unusual or difficult to service on a Touran (actually the transmission is easier to service than a regular auto).

I have to go for the day. I suggest you drive one and see what I mean. Good luck.

Yes Jazz , Tan ONLY EVER works in an Alfa , or cream in a Jag / Bentley eh.

richard198, Feb 9, 5:03pm
Not even in a Ferrari! Some BMWs have cream interior as well.

magicmat, Feb 9, 5:29pm
Not a fan of cream, tan or beige myself. Black or neutral grey are much more appealing to my eyes.

fordcrzy, Feb 9, 5:39pm
Toyota Ipsum have a black/grey interior if you get the 240s model.

chatsmom, Feb 9, 5:51pm
It would seem that not the Ipsum 240 do have the dark cloth unfortunately from my quick look at motors section.
Too many silver and white cars too - I guess colour gets snapped up quickly.

vtecintegra, Feb 9, 5:53pm
Its mostly because there is an extremely strong preference for those colours in Japan - they're very practical compared to darker options.

fordcrzy, Feb 10, 1:01am
the 240i and 240U mainly have tan interiors, but the majority of the 240S models have grey.

also look at a Nissan presage. you can get them in grey too

mugenb20b, Feb 10, 1:35am
I actually really like tan interiors. Much better than the sea of grey plastic.

richardmayes, Feb 10, 1:40am
Look like puke - really!

As everyone else is saying, I thought the Japanese specialised silver cars with grey plastic interiors! Monochromatic cars, to serve as monochromatic backdrops for monochromatic lives.

http://www.carstyling.ru/resources/classic/1999-2001_Fiat_Multipla_06.jpg Looks like someone sneezed during the design of that dashboard and the inspiration of the components was taken from where the spit landed http://www.alphacarrental.gr/images/FiatPunto07.jpg
Blue seats! Really stylish. At least the speedo is in the proper place unlike the miniature horse wagon.
