Not much at all.Manhole outers are on a sort of thread where they can wind up the outer to match road height. If they are already at maximum then there would be a problem, but the council is require to maintain the road in good condition, which includes man-made potholes like manhole covers.Palmerston North has a number of roads like this, Featherston Street is full of them, some two inches deep, gives the car suspension a hiding, and of course they are exactly where your wheels run.Complain bitterly to your council. write to the local paper, stir up some trouble.I'm getting close to doing that here.

I cycled in to Newmarket & back today. The one on Khyber Pass road are really bad. There is about 80mm or so drop from the new level of tarseal to the manhole covers.

fordcrzy, Feb 12, 10:28pm
what rubbish.THEY ARE NOT on threads. manholes sit on 600mmconcretemanways. they then use packers to ge it about right. th smallest is a 50mm packer. so you get 50/100/300/450/600/900mm heights for the manholes

*South* of Mangaweka.

Every time I slow down for that crossing, there's always an "I am really fast" type car [like a boy racer, or a V8 or an Audi RS whatever] that comes charging up fast behind me, then pulls out and passes, accelerates hard up to the crossing.

BANG!

Muppet, meet your long-lost friend, Mr Bumpstops.

You should be told a million times not to exaggerate. There's a manhole cover in Bealey Ave that's only 6 inches higher than the road. And anyway, it's a moot point whether the manhole covers are now a foot higher than the roads, or the roads are now about a foot lower than where the manhole covers were.

Invest in an old DS Citroen. Those cars smooth out bumps like you wouldn't believe. A mate of mine had one and for his party trick he would wait till all was quiet and hit the speed humps in the Palmy Esplanade at 80k--- Quite a buzz that was

Was onto that too.
I ya hit a railway line to the north, it would hurt a lot.

Laziness, saving money by doing rubbish jobs by councils.
Little NZ always does things on the cheap without any regard for the consequences.

It takes very little thought and it's very easy. A spacer ring in steel with the male profile one end and female the other end.

tonyrockyhorror, Feb 12, 11:17pm
I doubt that very much. It will have be constructed from prestressed concrete.

fordcrzy, Feb 12, 11:26pm
i am sure the pre stressed concrete are not as freakin bumpy as the hot mix surface. its like a back country road layed on a swamp.

richardmayes, Feb 12, 11:34pm
No it's not hard, it just costs money. 30-40mm x width of road x length of road = a metric buttload more compacted fill.

richardmayes, Feb 12, 11:39pm
The manholes are now higher than the roads.
The ground surface is still where it used to be; all the buried pipes / manholes etc had a few seconds during the EQ when they were floating in a liquid, during this time they tried to float upwards towards the surface.
