Fantastic

petermcg, Feb 13, 4:41pm
My Motor Home is Petrol and I still have to have a Hub Meter and pay full RUC charges because of its weight.

spike4x4, Feb 13, 4:45pm
what a joke, how about tracking down ALL of the diesel Hiace vans (and others) on the road that never buy RUC's.

mrfxit, Feb 13, 4:58pm
To quote >>>
"Senior Constable Pete Carmody, of Nelson Bays Highway Patrol, said avoiding road user charges by tampering with odometers was not new. However, with the rising cost of diesel and the increase in road user charges he expected the practice to become more prevalent. "

LOL . Well DUH.

gammelvind, Feb 13, 5:14pm
Why don't they sort this issue by including the RUC at the pump for vehicles under 3 ton! Simple to do, the rates for heavy vehicles just needs to be adjusted to allow for it and exempt users can simply apply for a refund.
The bonus is that small ecconomical deisel cars suddenly become worth buying.

terckon, Feb 13, 5:14pm
You may be able to claim the RUC's back, look into it.

pebbles61, Feb 13, 5:37pm
I wonder why that's going on.just like how the number of motorcycle regos haves halfed recently.I bet the number of bikes on the road hasn't.

vtecintegra, Feb 13, 5:38pm
How so! The amount of money a given system would need to take in would be exactly the same, only how its distributed would differ.

tuttyclan, Feb 13, 5:45pm
If everyone was paying RUC for diesel at the pump the govt would be getting all of the tax fairly so they could then afford to lower the cost to make it more favourable to drive a diesel car/van.

tuttyclan, Feb 13, 5:48pm
Anything over say 3 tonne would pay at the pump like everyone else but would pay extra road kilometres based on the weight over 3 tonne.

RUC's are based on mileage, so a small eco deisel car pays the same as much larger and thirstier vehicle. Some of these little common rail engines are thrifty and suprisingly peppy, but the benefits of the economy are significantly eroded by the cost of RUC based on distance.

Anyone for a TUI add

pollymay, Feb 13, 6:12pm
We already pay taxes for the fuel put in the lawnmower, the racecar, the petrol generator, the waterblaster, ATVs, the boats and all that junk. So you want every tractor, diesel generator, large boats and other off road hungry diesels paying as well!

The bit that irks me is they want to correct this "deficit" but they are getting tax on things that a technically exempt but they glaze that over, they raised GST and the price of fuel so accordingly they have got A LOT more tax in a simple king hit and everytime fuel goes up the GST slice goes with it. They are getting a PLENTY large slice of the pie, controlling the issue is fine, but to whine about this "lost money" while just skimming the part where they are picking it up elsewhere is annoying. I don't believe in taxed diesel at the pumps.

gammelvind, Feb 13, 6:23pm
There is no perfect system, but currently many roadusers are trying to fiddle the system, end result every deisel driver is under suspicion. Large users of off road deisel vehicles simply get to claim the tax back with the appropriate form and receipts.Probably less paperwork than trying to keep up with who has paid their RUC or who is ripping the system.

petermcg, Feb 13, 6:27pm
I think boy racers should pay RUC they do more damage than me.

petermcg, Feb 13, 6:30pm
Thanks man, I did try claiming the excise duty last season I had it running, and come accross a bitch in the office, she would not accept the dockets from the garage and wanted to see tax invioces,, I got $18.00 back after spending a couple of grand on fuel

petermcg, Feb 13, 6:33pm
Thanks bud for the help,, they are tough and audit everything

jmma, Feb 13, 6:40pm
Yes I know, have a mower repair bis, tried claiming back on the petrol I use once, wasn't worth the hassle and gave up.
Thought it might be worth a bit more for you though

intrade, Feb 13, 7:33pm
i posted links in march cops will be able to search cars for tempering divises and tax lawyer are going over every diesel vehicle and check where the owner lives and works calculates the milage they would do in a year and if it dont matches they will get a visit to inspect there diesel car for tempering. So best to have 1 petrol car otherwise your screwd already when you pay 500km r.u.c and drive 20,000k a year to work.

bigfatmat1, Feb 13, 8:08pm
the heavier the vehicle the higher the rucs i.e a 100t crane pays $7per km

bigfatmat1, Feb 13, 8:10pm
I know of no one in nelson that has been stopped and checked that article is also quite old and I work in the transport industry

mm12345, Feb 13, 9:24pm
.except that this is 100% correct. They wouldn't give a cent back in road tax to light diesel vehicle owners.
Although these days "in theory" 100% of RUC and fuel levy is supposed to go to roading, the distribution of cost is uneven.A 40 tonne truck does much much more damage than 20 2 tonne vehicles on the same trip on the same piece of road, but the truck doesn't even pay 20x as much in RUC.

steve312, Feb 14, 6:25am
Actually got a speedo head in my workshop at the moment that has just come back from the repair shop after being damaged through tampering. So yes, it does happen.

Funny thing was that after tampering the speedo was registering 10 kms per 1 km travelled.Talk about kama:o)Customer was really peed off and had it in for repair very smartly.
