But then people would get out of paying road tax by running their diesel vehicles on old cooking oil. Or by buying marine diesel. Or do the same as the guy in the uk who noticed that olive oil at the local supermarket was cheaper than diesel so he bought the supermarkets entire stock. Supposedly there is a police squad in the uk that is dedicated to finding and catching people who are using fuels that are not taxed at the source.

Exactly, and the cost of this force is! You always land up with "deficit" if you can't use common sense and just maintain balance and let go of the fact some people are going to slip the system; and likewise people that pay undue tax in other areas, I'm hardly screaming at the top of my lungs about that but I could given others feel the need to scream about a few tampered odometers.

hahahaha, big thumbs up to the guy who bought the supermarkets entire stock of olive oil.

Yes apparently over there it is illegal to use any fuel that has not already been taxed. We are fortunate here in NZ - you can still use alternatives like canola and olive oil etc to run your diesel engine.

This is a much easier and more cost effective system than cops searching for tampering devices and trying to test an odometer.
Also. we should not be giving our Police any extra powers to search vehicles. Its not a case of "so what if you have nothing to hide" we shouldn't have to submit to some stranger searching through and possibly damaging our vehicle because they feel like it.
This is just another avenue for the growing percentage of arrogant power tripping cops to abuse.

Its no different to NZ, you still have to pay RUC if you run your Diesel on canola oil here.
In the U.K its actually slightly better in that biofuels pay less tax than diesel. If you make biofuel for home or commercial use over there you have to fill outa form and register to pay tax on it. When the plod smells your ghost chips car coming and stops you he will request your tax documents.
Its not a perfect system but it certainly dosn't stop you using/making biofuel.

I don't really have a problem with paying RUC's. It's just another tax that is applied differently to petrol which makes it seem like we are paying more, I do think there needs to be an adjustment to the rates i.e a lower rate for private passenger vehicle and a higher rate for commercial vehicles. Another thing they need to sort out is the licensing, if there wasn't a 45% difference in license fees for private vehicles people may be more inclined to pay for RUC's.

I'm not sure they would be able to establish grounds to initiate a search of your vehicle on the side of the road purely on a hunch (I'm not even sure they have the powers to search under current legislation) to me that article just sounds like a 1 man army having a bleat, probably hoping his superiors will read it and give him a pat on the head. I don't agree with police becoming tax collectors, there are far more serious things they could be doing with their time

That sounds about similar to the amount paid on a small petrol car in taxes per mile travelled though.

Part of the reason is riders like myself that have more than one bike put the rego on one of them on hold for the winter months, or rego one bike for three months then put that one on hold and use the other for three months. That saves me around $500 a year in rego costs. Why pay ACC on two bikes as I only ride one at a time!

They have already been revenue raisers for the government for a number of years, this is just going to be another method of it.
