just purchased a96 silverado lhd, how do i go about getting itcomplied,i heard laws have changed and not sure what's what anymore

stealthbida, Feb 19, 2:43pm
Did you import it, buy it locally, or has someone else freshly imported it!

thecudadude, Feb 19, 2:43pm
at the risk of sounding like a w----r . i would have thought you'd have checked the law changing out before buying it . Coz there a bunch of guys out there selling off uncompliable vehicles . Lets hope yours aint one of them !

roadkill3, Feb 19, 3:16pm
i think it's been in nz awhile

intrade, Feb 19, 3:22pm
dont matter if it is in nz a while if it was not complyed then you purchased a pile of scrap metal if you cant get it passed the rules. i think but not sure there is a differnt rule for older cars. but new ones have 0 cance to ever be registered on nz roads unless they are right hand drive or converted to rhd.
only other way is when you can proof your a immigrant and you owned the vehicle oversees then they can get sometimes registered with left hand drive and you cant sell it for the next 5 years.

intrade, Feb 19, 3:23pm
96 model i think you just purchased scrap metal my friend on top of it has to meet euro4 emission standard since january 1, 2012

un_known, Feb 19, 3:28pm
what about all these new camaros and vettes ive been seeing at dealers! they have permits for LHD and obviously havent been owned by an immigrant by over 5 years since they are 2010/2011 models.

tgray, Feb 19, 3:30pm
I import LHD cars and this will not meet the current laws for registering in NZ.
Period.

intrade, Feb 19, 3:31pm
there is another wierd hideen law but i have not figured that out i think its for brand new cars only . can you check i guess they be all euro4 emission because thats another big bugger for not being able to register a car these days , stops loads of japanese imports now also .

tgray, Feb 19, 3:33pm
They are being complied under special catagory A exemption.
There are specific requirements that have to be met to do this.
ie/ must meet 3 out of 4 criteria
1.under 20,000 produced p/annum.
2. 2 door high performance coupe
3. collector car as described in a major publication
4. not be made in RHD.

intrade, Feb 19, 3:36pm
there we go then. So poster 1 only has 1 option to find a smashed or deregistered one and fix, turn that one in to the one that was registered once here, changing over the steering and there likes.

thecudadude, Feb 19, 3:37pm
Go back and see if u can find the man who sold it to you and poke him in the eye , coz i think you just got shafted .

tgray, Feb 19, 3:39pm
note: six cylinder camaro's/mustang's/cor-
vettes are generally not considered 'high performance' under the catagory A exemption criteria, and since most were produced in volumes of more than 20,000 p/year, they are not able to be registered as it only meet 2 of the 4 criteria. (must be 3 at least).

tgray, Feb 19, 3:39pm
You can go to jail for doing that!

intrade, Feb 19, 3:42pm
huh no not if you fix up the original chassy

roadkill3, Feb 19, 6:00pm
i'll just use it as a farm hack , cheers

lordv81, Feb 19, 7:27pm
Find an old chevy ambulance, some cheap ones pop up now and then.

granada, Feb 19, 7:34pm
Wouldnt even fit the crireria as a Demo Derby car. could make a great boat anchor.

vjregal770, Feb 19, 9:14pm
Hope you didn't shell out too much for it, roadkill. As far as I know, LHD cars made before 1990 don't need to be converted, those after, do.

tgray covers the rest up though. I'm not up with the new laws for newer stuff.

20 years or older, no problem.
Be aware however, that they not only go by the year, but also by the month of first registration. This means a 1992 corvette first reg in may 1992, cannot be reg until may 2012.
Silly isn't it!

lordv81, Feb 20, 6:57am
Dont they have to be imported as a 20 year old car!regardless of when they were made,it goes by the date of import!even if its older than 20 years now,if it wasnt when it was imported as a 20+ year then its scrap/parts.Or has it changed!

socram, Feb 20, 8:05am
Stepson bought a '95/96 Corvette in the States. Left it there for a year, then went over and did a cross US trip in it, parked it in LA and had it shipped from there just before Christmas.Seems to have had no real problems getting it through.

vtecintegra, Feb 20, 8:10am
I can't see how most modern Camaros could meet the collector criteria either (except for the special ones)

intrade, Feb 20, 8:21am
thtats because it is a immigrants car when you live oversees you can bring a car proof of specific time ownership is required and 5 year no selling is attached to that.
