Technically it will be deemed a classic in two years - that being in terms of NZTA registration costs etc. Will it be considered "classic" in the eyes of motoring enthusiasts! I somehow doubt it. Will it become an appreciating assett! I rather doubt that too.

I had one about 6 years ago - paid $180 for it and sold it for $500 after a year. Maybe I should have kept it for my retirement fund!

It's about as classic as a ford 10 or a morris 8, a heap of crap in it's day which age does not improve.

I've owned and got rid of a few cars now that have appreciated considerably. If only I had known at the time.

I thought classic (cheap) licensing kicked in at 40 years not 30, has it changed!
NZTools,
Feb 19, 3:36pm
No. Still 40 years. My 71 xy falcon only got cheap rego last year.
saki,

Rubbish not a classic untill they are 40 years old.

Might be a classic for some - I'd love another 84' corolla hatch if it was minty. Raise it, chuck some balloon tyres on it. sweet.
pebbles61,

Certainly looks tidy, but a future classic.I doubt it. Nothing wrong with that though, I own a 40+ year old car and most people wouldn't define it as a classic.
gammelvind,

About as classic as a hillman hunter, and about the same shape.
pebbles61,

Actually on second thoughts a classic is such an open ended question/opinion that sod what anyone elses says or thinks of it.

Just a run of the millfamily car from 80 snothing classic about itregardless ofconditionstill only worth$1500
richardmayes,

Not really my cup of tea, but any car that reaches that sort of age in that sort of condition is worthy of a certain base level bit of respect IMHO.
You do hear the odd (odd!) person raving about their old 1980s Mitsi Sigma they used to have, and how good it was, not every car attracts fans like that.
bellky,

classic my bottom.
but like richardmayes says, it's a matter of taste
peja,
Feb 20, 7:05pm
Not to my taste, but look at the money some older 70's Japanese cars are fetching now, if you'd suggested 10-15 years ago that 70's Corollas or Datsuns would in time be classics worth real money people would have looked at strangely.
I drove one of these Sigmas for a while a few years back, and have to admit it was a nice car to drive

If it was a V3000 I would say yes. Very tidy one though
mugenb20b,
Feb 20, 7:38pm
Future classic! No. A Peugeot 205 GTi is a future classic though.

If any of those Sigma models are going to become classics in future, then the GSR and GSR-X will. Back in the day for a couple of years they were the car to have for the typical middle-income family. I also remember the NZ New ST170 Corona GLXi then the Telstar XRi also being considered as the family "bees knees" cars to have of their period and pricepoint, esp when compared to what else you could have gotten brand new for similar money.

If I brought a mitsubishi video player in 1984, used it for a year and put it back in its box with the instruction manual, would I make a profit if I tried to sell it today!
No.
This is no different, unless you plan to hold it for 2000 years and sell it to a museum.
foxdonut,

Grandma's old shitter that she only drove once a month does not make a car "classic".
richardmayes,

Grandad's old shitter (Ford flat head V8) that he only drove once a month does not make a car "classic".

If it was a V3000 yes, paint it white and black. (MOT)
but not this one
fiatracer,

nicely said. Just look how popular all those ugly old Vauxhalls are with the 'classic car crowd'
socram,

Agree.Classic is totally in the eye of the beholder, but IF it reaches 50 or 60 years of age, it will by default, then probably be deemed a classic, but only by virtue of age. I was never a fan of (old) Vauxhalls when they were new, but the fact that most have dissolved means that the few survivors deserve recognition, but we need a new term, such as "Post War Mass Production".
