What part of this post do the naysayers not comprehend nor understand!

gunhand, Mar 3, 11:23am
I think most understand and have some sympathy that he really thought he was doing 50 at the time. Maybe he was. Question is why was he flashed then. Was there a car beside him as well!He has the option to defend it of course. But for $30 its hardly worth it and I guess they know it.And how would you prove you were doing 50 anyway! Its only your word against a callabraited camara. Unless you can prove fault with the camara or fault with your car in which case they will blame you anyway I guess.

owene, Mar 3, 11:57am
Pay up.

And don't forget to tell your insurer so that they may recalculate your next premium. If you don't tell them and make a claim then don't expect them to cough up.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 3, 12:20pm
The camera can be deliberately misaligned to give a higher than actual reading by a malicious (or bored.) camera operator.

hallett76, Mar 3, 12:33pm
Rubbish.someone might DOB THEM IN.

gammelvind, Mar 3, 3:26pm
If the OP was doing 50km and flashed doing 55 then the car has been modified in some way, tyres probably, most speedos read 5kph under these days. The only other thought could be that they have one of these stupid speedos that reads to 240 kph or somesuch sillyness and the lower numbers are so close together that it was simply read incorrectly.
As far as the 10 kph tolerance, didn't they hear that during the month of february there was going too be a 4 kph tolerance only.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 3, 4:30pm
Yeah, and this 'someone' would know how exactly!

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 3, 4:31pm
Car speedometers almosts invariably read HIGH on factory size tyres.

offrd1, Mar 3, 4:33pm
Why .you might have to much money and we are not all stupid,,he has a point

offrd1, Mar 3, 4:34pm
They are to stupid.simple

marte, Mar 3, 4:35pm
If the camera was out by 5Km/h,
Then everyone traveling at 45Km/h or over, 80% of the drivers.
Would get a ticket too.

marte, Mar 3, 4:37pm
Check you speedo with the distance pegs on the side of of main highways, they are accurate.

Same with the 'slow down for workers' signs.
They know exactly how long it should take you to get from one end to the other.

lalbagh, Mar 3, 4:49pm
VTNZ should offer speedo calibration as an optional extra on a warrant, A few bucks, and you have an accurate and verified speedo, and a certificate that you could use in defence.

trdbzr, Mar 3, 5:02pm
Most cars speedo's are usually out. Some even from factory. If you make any changes to the car ie changing rim, tyre size etc and the rolling diameter changes then your car is going to be travelling a different speed to what is actually showing on the speedo. This 4km/h tolerance is simply a revenue gathering activity. Its not going to bring down the road toll at all. I remember when the govt first brought in the 4km/h tolerance and the road toll was lower than average and they were shouting it from the rooftops. However, during the next public holiday, the road toll was higher than usual even with the 4km/h tolerance, and we did not even hear a whiff from the govt, nzta or the police.

The OP was NOT intending to speed, im suprised some people on here can't comprehend that. The main intention of this is simply to generate more revenue, if that wasn't the case, then the speedo error issue should have been brought up and highlighted by the various govt agencies involved. Most people wouldn't bother arguing about a $30 fine and simply pay up and the people making these stupid laws know it. If someone caught caught doing 120km/h in a 100km/h zone, then tough, you got caught, but doing 5km/h over the limit without realizing due to the vehicles speedo error and getting stung for it is simply stupid.

saki, Mar 3, 6:13pm
Yeah I got one as well 107 in 100kmh area Ill pay it get over it, no demerits that is the important part.

owene, Mar 3, 7:43pm
True but still increases your insurance premiums.

pup2, Mar 3, 7:59pm
I haven't heard about this. Enlighten me please.

simplekiwi, Mar 3, 8:09pm
Not moaning at speed tolerances, someone in the know though.if your speedo shows 100km/h but you are actually doing 90km/h, does the odomoter actually record 100km or 90km.do they run independant of one another!

taipan4, Mar 3, 8:18pm
At the end of two years the points are wiped anyway so go figure

esprit, Mar 3, 8:20pm
I hope you all realise that speed radar is not 100% accurate. Even when calibrated, when they're actually set up at the side of the road a number of external factors can influence them. Rain is a big one, but things like trees, fences, other cars, lamp posts all contribute to the radar field and can have a significant bearing on the reading if you're trying to catch up on a narrow speed band.

Personally, I would fight it if I was in your position and thought I was genuinely hard done by. A good lawyer will request the data from the speed camera that day and will compare its picketing rate with others, and if a large anomaly is present you're in the clear.

Speed cameras these days are fully automated, they're set up, they take the pictures and then back at base they're simply downloaded into the system and infringement notices are issued and sent without human intervention so it's entirely possible the unit was working incorrectly and ticketed you wrongly.

As for those who say don't speed.I'd love to ride shotgun with you for half an hour and write you up fines for everything you got wrong as per the law. I bet I could easily find over 2 grand's worth for anyone.

offrd1, Mar 4, 5:50am
I agree entirely. At last someone with a brain.lol.drive with me for a day, [i drive milk tankers ] i find these so called non speeding incredible drivers, their driving is artorius.they hardly ever let you pass, very rarely know the road rules.this season the cops targeted them here.what a happy day

flack88, Mar 4, 6:44am
Really offrd, wish they would target them over here, only difference between tourists, and kiwi drivers is ,the visitors dont put thar foot up when you pass them !Did 12hr run yesterday ,and cops looked to be pullin ,poor buggers that were trying to safely pass idiots doing 65kmh open road ,hugging centre line.

offrd1, Mar 4, 7:15am
lol.i know what you mean, isn't it a pain.the cops [cop ] have been stopping the odd slow driver, mainly in the Motueka Valley, the one i seen the other day i think got sick of following about 12 cars at 50kph all the way up the Valley, when i went past there was a lot of finger waving from the cop .lol.may be the same cop as this happened a little while ago as well .i think slow drivers that DON'T PULL OVER are far more than speeding drivers [ not talking dangerous driving here ] getting tickets for 5kph over is bloody ridiculous in the extreme.i think cops doing U turns in front of motorcycles is far more dangerous

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 4, 1:48pm
It depends on why your speedometer is reading high. If it's just the factory calibration, then you can be pretty sure that the odometer is reading correctly. The two are independently calibrated. But if it's because of a change in gearing due to say wheels and/or tyre size then that will be a factor.

p_rock, Mar 4, 1:56pm
Might pay to dip UNDER the speed limit. when passing camera than driving right on the limit.
