I hope it stays at 6 months because otherwise half the idiots on the road will be driving around with bald tyres and stuffed brakes for at least 6 months longer if they change it.

jason18, Mar 29, 5:46am
Keep warrents the same but reduce rego costs! They dont make our cars safe

rsr72, Mar 29, 5:58am
The world doesn't have WOFS, so why should little NZ!
It's nothing more than a gigantic, bureaucratic, make-work scheme for retired mechanics, and who are getting fewer and fewer as time goes by.

anilnz, Mar 29, 6:05am
Agreed. As our lawmakers copy everything Aussie, they should copy this too. Aussie has no WOF, we shouldn't either.

tuttyclan, Mar 29, 6:06am
WOFs should be increased to 12 months but the cost of getting one will hopefully stay the same.I wont be impresed if they double the price as I have older cars which I use for 6 months then swap over to another car.In other words I will only get 6 months out of a 12 month paid up wof.Be good for my moderns but no differant for my older less used cars.

sheepey, Mar 29, 6:25am
Better off paying a Annual licence fee to have a driver license and get rid of the vehicle licencing cost.To me it seems a rip to pay to have 5 cars licensed when i can only drive one.It could be a bit of a problem for business owners but could be sorted out.
The current system is a cash cow for the Govt and i doubt anything will change, except that it will continue to increase!

rsr72, Mar 29, 6:36am
It's a cash cow for little workshops and their mechanics, who also look forward to their nice-little-earner retirement income from working in WOF stations.
We cannot justify having such a timewasting, bureaucratic, expensive, non-productive, exercise in a modern economy.

kcc55a, Mar 29, 6:40am
How can it be a make work scheme for RETIRED mechanics!

twink19, Mar 29, 6:42am
Australia has no WOF, but if you get stopped and you car is not road worthy, it gets impounded on the spot no exeptions

rsr72, Mar 29, 6:44am
You been in a testing station !

johnf_456, Mar 29, 6:58am
Even 6 month is too long for some. I.e the sort that just pass a wof on tyres then drive for the next 6 months. But then again everyone gets punished for the lowest common denominator out there.

Bring on more personal responsibility.

johnf_456, Mar 29, 6:59am
Bring it! Would save many of us petrol heads lots. Have a small admin fee to cover maintaining the database for correct addresses etc then the rest on the person / license.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 29, 7:00am
His point is if they're RETIRED they're no longer working. They're FAILED mechanics. like building inspectors are FAILED builders.

carmedic, Mar 29, 7:21am
With emissions import restrictions in place the NZ fleet is set to once again get older rather than newer. NZ will however continue to rely on used overseas imports in the main, in order to replace said ageing fleet; this is almost (if not) unique in the developed world.
Comparisons to the likes of Australia or the UK are NOT helpfull. Both have very low numbers of used imports hitting the road each year and still have domestic manufacturing.
Is my view impartial!
Of course not, if we moved to annual WoF??

mrfxit, Mar 29, 9:25am
It's called a "road worthy certificate" & when you buy/sell a vehicle for on road usage, you MUST have a new cert test done & passed WITH the owner change.
In the meantime, as the driver, if your vehicle fails a basic roadside "roadworthy" test check, the fines are HUGE compared to here & theres a better then even chance the car will be impounded or ordered off the road

smac, Mar 29, 9:32am
Ya and what this does is (shock horror) shifts the responsibility of operating a safe vehicle from the state back to the operator, where (I think) it should be.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 29, 9:55am
Personal responsibility! What kind of craaaaazy idea is that!

The introduction of ACC is responsible for the lax attitude people here have to their own safety and that of others because injuring others through their own actions or inactions has little consequence for individuals.

smac, Mar 29, 10:01am
Agree, it's a pretty foreign concept to most NZ'ers, but if NZ'ers want to see an increase in standard of living and reduction in state meddling in their lives, government has to shrink. For THAT to work people need to start towing the line - i.e. you perform (keep you car up to scratch) or you get hit.

Small steps. Something being hard isn't a reason to not try.

slarty45, Mar 29, 10:03am
Yep, got a wof for my 125 scooter last week
didn't take long, not much to check
15 min total for $45

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 29, 10:12am
I fear the horse of personal responsibility has already bolted.

phillip.weston, Mar 29, 10:14am
I'm sorry but you don't know what you're talking about. Most states of Australia DO have an annual inspection in order to obtain registration, Queensland requires an inspection every time you sell or buy your vehicle, so a vehicle which changes hands often could be inspected many times in a 12 month period, or could go 10+ years without an inspection.

phillip.weston, Mar 29, 10:14am

- only when selling, otherwise as in the USA, no WOF checks at all.
Doing away with WOFs opens the way forwell-overdue compulsory insurance to be brought in by the govt.
