attemtpted!Come on everyones tried to pull the wool over someones eyes when its been time to sell a car. Or whats the worst one you have avoided. You know you close the door and all the bog drops out but it had just had a full pro panel and paint, that kinda thing.
I many many years ago traded a mitsi that used more oil than petrol, and sold a VL commy with blown head gasket. But to be fair he had his father check it over first.

Isuzu Bighorn I traded to a car yard- Trans was rooted, overheated at the sight of a hill(trans temp light), Stuffed a bottle o' moreys in the tranny and the buggers drove it from taranaki to auckland!

Remind me never to calibrate my moral compass with yours.

Kind of a semi rip off. About ten years ago I sold a gtr skyline I had imported. When it got here it had a blown turbo so relpaced them with a second hand pair but it just didnt feel right. Went hard but sounded off.
Compressions tested ok, couldn't put my finger on anything specific.
Anyway, sold it to a guy who drove it halfway up the island before it chewed up a set of main bearings and threw all its toys out of the cot.

I would have willingly bought it back from him for what he paid but he was a mouthy little prick and got all abusive so I let him pay the price.

I bought a Mazda V6 (Emeruade!) at Hammers auction. It looked ok but was unclean and had a smashed side window. Driving it home (at night) there was clunking from the front susp. joint and it was overheating. I took it to my mechanics who said it had a rooted susp. bush and a blown head gasket. Not worth doing. I got a replacement window for it, cleaned it, put bottles of water in it to refill the rad. as I went back to Hammers. I told the auctioneer (who I knew) the story and he said he??

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 30, 8:01am
Wow. The rip-off-go-round.

kazbanz, Mar 30, 8:04am
Ive lost count of the number of ripoffs people have tried to do or done to me in the last few years.
Aircon not working, K's twice or three times what was quoted, car was "mint" -by whose definition I dunno.
Gearbox knackered ,low compression in the engine
The list goes on and on.You just accept that the public are out to rip you off and move on

bellky, Mar 30, 8:12am
Yes, disgusting. And astonishing people are willing to admit what they have done. Shameful.

brought a holden ute of yard in Tauranga. Whole base all the way round had been resprayed , but looked straight. 6 months latter the rear suspension on one side dissapered up into the floor pan and bog fell out all the way round. Literally rotten to the "Core". Model ! about late 60's early 70's. First without full chassis. Trailered to the wreckers. Also , would travel all day at 90 k's but would boil within 5 minutes if you sat her on the 100 mark.Had neighbor who sold cars and he twice had people push their trade in onto the yard, having kept it overnight while their new purchase was being "detailed". Win some , loose most.

went to look an old school mr2 out at Burnham army base that was for sale, I asked if the roof leaked at all, he said no. On getting there late in the day ALL the windows were fogged up and it and literally an inch of water in the foot wells. he tried telling me it was from the previous days snow and that it must have come off their shoes.

Failed WOF at local garage I used to deal with, and used to be excellent - just after the business had been sold to a new owner. Problem was one small weld repair needed in an accessible spot on a firewall seam. The workshop had an associated panel shop, and quoted $750-$1,000 to fix it.I took the vehicle to another shop, who fixed (and certified) the problem perfectly for $70 incl GST.

Had an old school dealer back in the 70s trade in a car after taking it for a drive around the block and only found out it had no reverse gear after the customer had driven away in his new purchase.

kazbanz, Mar 30, 9:31am
Actually the very "best' rip off attempt was the customer who traded in a 96 nissan bluebird5 years ago.
Deal was done.deposit paid on fridaypickup to be tuesday.
The trade in was parked out on the roadside on tuesday
Customer was strangely nervous and wanting to get away fast.
I went out to get the milage of the car. -HMM
2 doors stoved in the bonnet was a different color.
Went to start the car and it sounded like a cement mixer.A big oil patch underneath it.
Things got a bit heated because the customer did the whole "You said you would trade it for $xxxx." Fortunately we use inspection sheets so I pulled it out and -no damage to the car and no mention of mechanical issues.
Pretty clear they were expecting us not to recheck the trade.
Turns out that one of their cousin's cars was in an accident and they swapped the bits-including the engine.
Strangely enough they still did the deal--but with the car at a MUCH lower value.

Years ago,i bought Datsun Sunny for my wife, for $5000 at Car Auction, a wet day, so didn`t look too closely underneath, and it looked very tidy, and it had a brand new WOF, which theAuctioneer mentioned a lot . It had brand new carpet throughout. Next day, found out that the whole floor pan had rusted away, so took to a workshop and gave it another WOF check.failed badly.Turner Auctions didn`t want to know about it, and insisted that as i bought it under the hammer ,my problem, even though the new WOF was a sales pitch.WOF had been issued by a big car dealer, so took it to them, two days later, we drove out of their yard with a real nice 200bzx, which they had $9000 on.they kept my $5000 purchase,so i was $4000 better off and got a much nicer car.
It seemed to me at the time, that they wanted to shut me up,but it turned out, that the WOF was not issued by them, one of their employees had used the WOF book to issue it for his G/F.The 200B lasted for years.

bought a honda shuttle for $350 (all it was worth!) and sold it for $750 after i'd painted it with black warehouse spray paint and left alot of paint drips all over it! it was a $1 reserve and the person didnt even look at it before purchasing, i drove it from greymouth to blenheim for them, gave them the keys and left pretty dam quick. the pictures must have done the car justice. the nerve i had when i was young! wouldn't have the guts to do that now.

sifty, Mar 30, 4:22pm
Sheesh some of you guys seem proud of being dirtbags.

I could never knowingly rip someone off

gunhand, Mar 30, 5:04pm
Geeez, what polish do some of you use to polish ya halos! I think most have either been ripped off or done some ripping off its just wether they man up and admit it. The VL I on sold had a blown head gasket when I got it so wasnt of my doing, and whats the FIRST thing you all preach when buying a car! Get a pre purchase done or take a mate to look at it. I for one welcomed any incpection and when dad "the mechanic" checks it out and says its fine why would I argue. And Ive brought and sold, must be well over 40 cars and bikes and only two had an issue.
And certainly wouldnt use the word PROUD to describe it. When you get some who do it for a living more or less then theres an issue.

hijacka, Mar 30, 5:11pm
Don't you mean ''Car dealers!''

br.jacko, Mar 30, 6:00pm
brought a kingswood ute at night,$1700 very happy. next day spotted behind rear wheels chicken mesh and newspaper with cardboard over top and a skim of bog. my mission was to flick it on, changed rear tyre drove to work, word got out quick it was for sale, anyway was sold by the end of the day, guy started it ,gave it a rev.goneburger.next day i see it on the back of a transporter. rear wheel had fallen off and ripped half the deck off. . id forgotten to nip up wheel nuts. never heard from him again.2 people ripped off in 36 hours.

elect70, Mar 30, 6:05pm
Owner swappedalloy wheels/tyresafterinspection & agreeing to buy, walked away.Dealer"lostrego paperscouldnt verify number of owners, said would get new 1 if purchased ( beforeon line searchcame in )walked from that 1 to . But got sucked into "reconnedmini "aftermonthit blew headfound 2 low comp pistons & 2 hi comp pistons ,dealer reckoned it came like it .I was just a greenapprentice .

gammelvind, Mar 30, 6:21pm
Sadly the public has probably more shady characters than the dealers. I sold cell phones for some years, the if I had a $1 for everytime the public tried to pull a swifty I would be much better off today.

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 30, 6:24pm
My thoughts exactly*.

*Government excluded

tonyrockyhorror, Mar 30, 6:26pm
What's to admit to in order to 'man up' if you've been ripped off!

gunhand, Mar 30, 6:29pm
To admit you were shafted and wern't as clever as you may have thought lol.

hamishcookie, Mar 30, 7:35pm
Boss at the times son was in Japan buying bikes and the was an RGV250P there looked pretty rough had no kick start, Bosses son put it in gear and gave it a little push and it felt like it had compression so he brought it as a wreck thinking the motor was good, got it back to NZ and noticed all the barrel and head bolts were only finger tight, they had shoved rags though the little ends to make it feel like it had compression, both of the barrels and power valves were toast.
