Too right there is, while its easy to point the finger at dealers the public are the worst liars when trading their junk in with undisclosed defects which are usually not obvious but nonetheless expensive to repair, hidden structural damage, leaking heaters, electrical gadgets not working, brake pads and rotors worn out front and back etc. They know that bills are coming up and they don't care who they offload their problems to. I remember years ago when I was a regular at Turners budget auctions seeing an early Bluebird or 180B wagon that the whole left side of the roof had completely rotted off where it joined the side panel from front to rear, you could put your fingers under the roof skin and lift it like it was a sardine can lid lol. How anyone could sell or auction that with a straight face was beyond me.

Nope definitely not-The public genuinely feel its perfectly ok to lie to a dealer or to "forget" to tell the dealer important stuff about the trade in.

I wouldn't knowingly try to rip off a car dealer, but they are supposed to be "experts", so I think it's ok to just drive up and say "how much would you give me for this as a trade in!". Especially if it's a car which is high mileage but basically ok. What has surprised me is the number of dealers who will just take a very quick look and come up with a figure, often without driving it.

rpvr- all good but you can only assess based on what you have in front of you. The engine jammed full of itrontite, The car that doesn't idle when its cold. The ripped seats covered by strapped in car seats,The pillars pood up with bondy and painted the day before. Hey don't get me wrong I'm not bitter and twisted about it --You accept that buyers are liars

If that's^ the case then: Dealers are stealers.
Lol.

Car dealer in Christchurch that used to only sell manual cars had an E36 M3 in there some years back. I quite liked it and went and had a look. He offered to install an alarm for me, $550 and told me "we don't make a cent on these alarms".
The alarm could be bought and installed professionally by a Trade Me seller for $200.

dealers are in bussiness to make money no point in doing it otherwise but i agree with kaz people dont seem to mind trading dodgy cars to dealers and then expect the one they just bought to come with a lifetime garantee

this story is about "payback". 20yrs back a young guy had a MK1 cortina, it ran a 1500 kent motor that was blowing a heap of blue smoke, it needed rebuilding, I offered to rebuild it but wanted money for parts 1st then rest when motor installed back in car.std rebuild nothing hard about it put motor back in car both he and the car was pleased as with motor. I asked for rest of money for rebuild labour, he responed " pay you next week cash when i get paid" ! this went on for 3 weeks no sign of him or money! Next I hear from his sister that he was dodging me about paying bragged to his mates that he "ripped me off! " Well that weekend I took off to his place with a hand full of iron fillings out of work drop saw pop opened the bonnet and gave the freshly rebuilt 1500 cortina motor a good dose of metal fillings straight down the oil filler. Last I heard the motor s**t its self 5 miles from home . cost him more to get another motor hahahaha

When I was 16, bought my first car, private sale (turned out to actually be a dealer flicking off crap at home) had watched it advertised 2.5 first week, 2.4 next week etc. Asking 2300 after a few weeks so i go along with Mum to have a look. He was a arrogant pr!ck so I offered $1800. He done a big act about how it wasn't enough so I said "ok fair enough". Turned around and took 2 steps when Mum says "Oh. so don't want it!" "Naap" Then he yells out "OK OK ok, Fine you can have it for $1800" All was good until the rust started coming through EVERYWHERE! But I was 16 and a year later I had it almost rooted, it was almost ready to fail wofs by then. And I don't plan on having another tinfoil HONDA!

i found a 4WD for the MIL. and bargained the price right down.when she picked it up and brought it around i noticed that the near new bridgestone tyres had amazingly turned into nearly worn out mud and snow tyres.she didnt notice, but i did and pics to prove that the deal was done and it had the good tyres on. i told everyone i knew not to deal with the scumbags

Traded a Kingswood back in the good old days, ran OK, quiet etc. One of the boys used it to tow his boat over he weekend and came back with the diff howling. Checked it out and found lots of RTV on the crownwheel and pinion. One of my mates had a 1100 Escourt. Brought a 1600 Mk 2 Cortina GT in rough condition and did the engine swap. Traded the 1600 Cortina GT now with 1100 engine in it on a really nice motorbike. He told the dealer it needed a tune up.

Sorry did I offend a honda owner! The guy owned a paint shop.1980's hondas very prone to rust is the lesson. When galvanised they were dipped only to the window sills, circa 1990 onward they were fully galvanised.

When I was first a student in the late 80s I studied with a guy who decided to deal in early Civics. He buy the crappers, get other people to work on them (crunched down their hourly rate etc) and on sell. They were still rubbish but now they sounded ok and looked good ??

This thread would make a good show for fair go or campbell live."So how honest are our trademe traders!.lets find out."
It's easier just to be straight up and note all faults you are aware of andyou've told the viewer. have it noted on reciept sold as is where is and state what you;ve mentioned and state buyer was given option to do their own inspection and be satisfied to point that the've decided to go through with trade. both party sign and keep your copy of reciept.
but that's just me and i must be living in my dreamland yeah. i certainly can't sleep at night knowing i ripped off some poor chap of his hard earned cash. just not in my moral books.

put 4x small washers (evenly spaced) between the wheel bearing and large washer on 2x wheels of a tandum trailer (one on each side) on a good note, it did pass a brand new WOF :)

Ah, the mighty Roman Catholic Church, how apt that they should get a mention in a thread about "most obvious rip off".

not so much rip off, as making claims that palpably aren't true.

Oh please tell me - the claims the RCC make that are "rip offs" or "aren't true"!

mate sorry to tell ya but in actual fact you diddn't win from that one. When you are dealing with dropkicks like him EVERYTHING is someone elses fault. So sure as eggs is eggsthe smartass concerned would have told everyone he could about the engine you built that blew up a couple of weeks after YOU built it for him.
