Do you pay a tradesman to fix his mistake?

If i stuff up a job, how could i possibly justify charging to fix it!

Unacceptable. Their mistake lead to a consequential loss. While for a service acquired for business purposes wouldn't have it, a consumer would have the protection of the CGA for the consequential loss. A business however has the FTA but that is not so powerful.

If that work is as a consequence of their incompetence, yes. If however the customer instructed them to do work against the tradesman's advice then certainly not. But the OP is saying it's as a result of the tradesman's error.

Kaz are you sure that the tech wasn't an ex politician, they are experts at stuffing up and charging for it.

Consequential repairs, yes, the tradesperson should do it for nothing.

But if repairing so is just a matter of the tradesperson do something it turns out would have had to do as part of the job anyway, then that is billable (assuming we are not talking a fixed price job here and thus it wasn't included in the initial bill).

I had an accountant leave me in a very bad situation with the IRD but it was ultimately caused by my own lack of interest in following my own affairs. It cost me dearly in penalties and back payments even though part of the problem was caused by the IRD sending mail to an address we hadn't lived at for five years and copies to our old accountant leaving me unaware of the penalties being incurred.
I would love to have some recourse but the blame won't stick to anyone.
