Trapster - better than a detector?

I installed Trapster a while ago & found it really useful, now the local maps don't show on my screen when I try to enter the location of a mobile speed camera van

ponyboy, Mar 7, 12:03pm
Any detector units pick up the new mobile camera units that use an invisible IR flash instead of the old orange flash!now you can't tell you've been got until the notice arrives in the mail

nightsky1, Mar 7, 7:32pm
don't forget to clean the inside of your windscreen as well

pollymay, Mar 7, 9:24pm
I ride my bike now, they can flash me all they want head on; just smile and wave.

I've been noticing a lack of ye old light flashers lately though. I still do it for the truckies a lot but no one ever gives me a heads up. Then again these are the same people that try run me down every day of the week so to be expected. Followed one moron today that was doing 40 in a 100 zone with a huge tailback, funnily enough the cop on speed duty near bombay didn't leave his post for it, just watched everyone crawl past.

bmwnz, Mar 8, 6:11am
I still flash, but since the cops began ticketing for it, I see it less and less from others.

kokako14, Mar 8, 7:36am
Yes, when ever I am out driving on the open road, I flash my headlights at on-coming traffic.
Havent seen a cop, just being friendly
Must work though, when I read the paper the next day, I always see there were no deaths on the section of road I had been over.

Escort Redline does.

gedo1, Mar 8, 12:06pm
I travel quite a few kilometres by motor vehicle per year and, like most people, I am sure I exceed the posted speed limit from time to time. I don't mean to but it happens.I thought of buying a detector but found the so called best ones were well over a thousand dollars. The Redline Escort for example was about $1250.Now I can afford that but I did my sums. For that amount of money I can afford to get pinged up to about 16 or 17 times (provided it was for just being over the speed camera threshold of 10km/h).I estimate I've travelled about 40,000 km in the last two years and since I have not been pinged for speed in that time I won't be buying a detector - just not good economics.

gedo1, Mar 8, 12:10pm
By the way, just checked with the manufacturer of the Escort Redline. they don't react to infrared flash units as far as they know. They were intrigued by the idea though but pointed out that it would (as I see the op suggested) only react after you have been pinged and thus not what they would be advocating as a feature since it would imply that their unit is ineffective as a viable detector. They would rather let the user know that they are in jeopardy of being detected sufficiently early so that they can slow down if necessary.I can see their point.

hopie, Mar 8, 12:19pm
Ive got it (trapster). also I flash lights to oncoming traffic

meathead_timaru, Mar 8, 12:47pm
It's just scaremongering. Besides, you were just warning the oncoming vehicles of a hazard - a dog running around on the side of the road. Oh, you didn't see it, Officer! It must have been out of sight when you went past.

meathead_timaru, Mar 8, 12:50pm
The poster asked if there was a detector that picks up the new camera unit, not whether one picked up the IR illumination. The Escort Redline picks up the very low power K-band signal from the newest cameras.

mark.52, Mar 8, 1:06pm
Bit of a waste of time having one alerting to the camera flash. It's a done deal by then.
What's needed is one that will pick up emissions in the K band (all detectors do that) and filter out the nuisance ones effectively (a GPS-enabled detector will do that.)

I see that the new gen cameras also use laser (probably Lidar) to detect the car that's actually speeding across the 6 lanes or whatever, so a lidar detector will let you know you're in proximity to that. (To late to slow down by then, if you were speeding.)

The K band used by the mobile cameras is not particularly strong, and it's fairly directional (apart from reflection/scatter, which would result in an even weaker signal) so by the time the detector picks it up, you've probably got less than, maybe, 2 seconds to get to within the limit.

K band is also used by door openers, various traffic sensors, those stoopid signs that tell you how fast you're going etc. There are a huge number of nuisance alerts in the K band, which is why GPS filtering is advisable.

I see the speed trap sharing app as only useful if you do have a passenger to text the location and of short term use only concerning each individual alert, but the more that use it and share on a trip to trip basis, the better,

But what about demerit pointsthey 'award 'them for camerafinestoo3or 4 of them in 2 years & your walking for 3 months . .

kokako14, Mar 8, 1:12pm
Walking for 3 months.Nah, just driving real careful for 3 months

meathead_timaru, Mar 8, 1:29pm
There are no demerit points for speed camera infringment offences.

mark.52, Mar 8, 2:16pm
They're thinking of changing that rule, I believe.

meathead_timaru, Mar 8, 2:18pm
They've been saying that for years.

pieman33h, Mar 8, 5:20pm
where can i get the radar jammers i keep reading about from the states! or are these no good either!

mark.52, Mar 8, 5:43pm
Radar jammers are illegal here, as they transmit a radar signal. I think laser jammers might be, too. If not already, then likely soon.

All I can suggest is to try asking at a place like Radar Direct, they may be able to point you toward a suitable place.

wizid, Mar 8, 5:51pm
my gps tellsme when in range of speed camera.

exwesty, Mar 8, 7:26pm
That only works for a fixed camera on a pole.
Mine does the same and even the fake one in Ngatea is listed.

what a concept, its being used here but you hear NOTHING about it. I wonder how well it works!

dont know i seen gps units who work like trapster as country like germany switzerland austria your not allowed to use a radar detector, dont think it be better then radar detectors
