My sons Mazda ute is cutting out when it falls below 2000 revs. So when he changes down or when he comes to a stop it cuts out. Hes been using the choke to try and keep it going. It happened quite quickly as he drove it to work fine and then it was rough driving home. Anyone have any ideas! Big thanks :-)

Blocked idle circuit or vacuum leak.

ok.thanks.bit foreign to me, but I will pass that on to him. He was hoping it was something he could sort himself, but its just deciding whats causing it. Sorry, I'm not greatly car minded.as long as they keep going I'm happy :-)

check carjam.co.nz for engine number. they could have knoked a vaccume hose it has happened to me once also on them vvti toyota changing the aircleaner pulls off the vaccume hose and then it wont run right after a whle till you plug it back to where it was pulled off. thats just one example.

Oh, ok.could that have knocked off by itself, as he drove it to work fine, then the drive home it was crap!

dont know the cambelt could have jumped 1 tooth to make it run crap also its why we would want to see what engine number it has.

For it to have a manual choke it's a carbureted engine. Idle circuits work up to around 1800rpm. The reason it's stalling is there's not enough gas to the engine through the carb, or too much air.
First thing check there is no air getting into the engine through the intake - this could be a hose fallen off or a cracked hose etc,
I there's no air leaks then it must be blocked idle jets, although this seems less likely as the application of the choke improves it.
I could be wrong about this. I'm sure others will have other ideas.

spoke to my son at lunch and he was told the same thing.said a mechanic would have to use process of elimination as well. My process of elimination was.well, its not the clutch, its not the tyres or the horn.see, I'm pretty good at this stuff :-P
Thanks for everyone shelp, much appreciated :-)

I have a van with the same engine. Recently it started to do a similar thing, although there were other symptoms as well, like the odd backfire and difficultly starting it. It turned out to be a crook distributor condenser, cheap and easy to fix, worth checking I reckon.

to check for vacuum leaks get a gas torch dont light it and wave it round the intake manifold while engine is runing if revs pick up then u have a vacuum leak for a block in carby take air cleaner off start engine hold at 2000 rpm and put hand over top of carb dont let motor die repeat 3 timesthats a couple of easy tests

Thanks 'saxman' and 'beast9' I will definitely pass these suggestions on to my son. He is stubborn and determined to try and fix it himself.which is cool. Its the only way to learn :-) Its pouring at the moment so I suspect it may not get fixed.today.haha
