What pimple! It makes us look like failed try-hards, and we're losing out to Ozzies calling that thing a Mountain. Totally agree with you.
I still call it Rothmans - but we're not allowed.
My vote is HD
Think of people who live below Auckland for once.

I would never pay do go see the V8's again, last time I did it was like I was the only one who paid, everyone just got in free and got better seats in corporate stands leaving real fans to fill in gaps on the grass. It's true what #37 says, just business. Business that hasn't had my money for about 5 years now and not looking like it will get again any time soon.

Whatever,lets have it in Hastings.

It don't matter where it is so long as the drivers love it, it has plenty of spectator appeal and the promoters get the timetable right. How about around the base of Mt Taranaki, heaps of spectator embankment there! Seriously why has Taupo been left out of this discussion, is it because the majority rules and most posters live north of the Bombays!
thunderbolt,
Apr 30, 5:56am
Taupo and other options south of AKL havebeen left out for the following reasons: Too far from a big population base Too far from major airport to get the B trains in Not enough accommodation Too far from a major town for other entertainment Not enough infrastructure to run the event and get people in and out
bill-robinson,
Apr 30, 6:07am
rethink that thunderbolt. 1 not a problem, people drive cars, buses go there, planes even fly there 2 B trains do not fly 3 plenty of accomodation 4 the entertainment IS the racing 5 proved wrong with international singe seater racing drawing large crowds
thunderbolt,
Apr 30, 7:32am
Don't need to convince me Bill, these are the reasons that TC won't look outside of the AKL population base
newtec1,
Apr 30, 7:41am
That is exactly the reasons given by Cochrane, and i tend to agree with them.Especially the distance from the airport, accomodation and entertainment after the racing.

Taupo (like Hampton Downs) has no covered stands but the only spectator area that appears to be accessible to the public is along the main straight. I want close up viewing at corners!
We have often had major problems finding accommodation there if there is any other event on in Taupo, and although on the surface, there is plenty of it, those who want to drive there and back in a day (or both days) will be too far away.
Pukekohe and HD are not too far from Hamilton and Auckland, so locals don't need as much accommodation.HD is only an hour from the North Shoreand probably only an hour from Cambridge, so the immediate catchment reaches well over a quarter of the NZ population, most of whom are mobile.
Sadly, Taupo has never really promoted its facility as I'd been in NZ for several years and passed through Taupo several times, without knowing it even had a track! With the extensions and improvements, (and a strong council involvement) you would think that it would now be very well publicised in and around the town and on the approaches to it.
Is it now signposted from the new bypass!
thunderbolt,
Apr 30, 8:31am
New bypass makes it easy to get to the track, I think it is sign posted.

Doesnt fit the question at all. Seems a bit of a stupid answer actually. guessing you dont know the answer though.

Sarcasm is lost on you then, or do you want it explained in very simple terms.
bill-robinson,

you keep quoting TC forget him he is there for money only. and there are more people living in the rest of NZ than live in Jafaville.

! So you can get there in the first place! Not everyone likes sitting in traffic for hours (maybe you do!). HD was a mistake from day one, middle of NOWHERE! will always get the hardcore fans but never the masses.[/quote] We see the results of race tracks nearsuburnan areasdont we . Who would have thought that Pukekoe wouldnow be facing noise problems&possible restrictionslike western spings .HD logicalplaceonlyfew km fromdrag srip &dont hear of complaints from dorklanders about travelling to that . Remember when aussieFirst cametalk about trainthen butall went nowhere, instead thery wiselyused private landfor parking .HD wont bebullied intohosting it for nothingthey aint dumbasscouncilorsthat can be swayed by"consultants " BS ofhuge returns forretailers .HD showeeon firstinternational meet they can handlelargecrowdseasilywas well organised with shuttles running from parkingareas .

Regardin the use of Puke for V8s. Surely its been proved several times that its just not suitable for them. - very little passing room is the major problemn plus the state of the track itself, and pit facilities. No way would the Govt put in money to assist- its just not politically expedient. Also as for modifying the track, its always been an issue that the horse racing owners (Franklin Racing Club!)have never permitted it and are hardly likely to now. Have there been changes in this respect!

Well going by the massive crowd ( biggest in many years )at Manfeild this weekendthesuper tourers are theway to gobuggeraussie V8 who needs them ,& more aussies aregoing to leaseST sas wellastheaussieSCcircusgets out of reach for all but the factorybacked teams . Bet Taupo gets a huge crowd too inAugust so long as they wake up & provide some spectator facilitieslike stands & food & working PA system
mopsy3,

No, just thought it was stupid. As is sarcasm.
geedubu,

Hampton Downs is a brilliant track and the best thing to happen to NZ motorsport for years.Just needs a couple more break-through events or a higher mainstream profile. It would be a great shame if government support went to Pukekohe because of lobbying from the very experienced horse racing fraternity.(We have a Minister of Horse Racing, ffs!How bizarre.)
t2weetypie,
Apr 30, 5:20pm
HD is the right choice we all (sane people anyway) accept that, given its location to the masses yet its remoteness that suits motorsport events, so what does it need to do to get its facilities sorted out like grandstands covered or open, corporate areas, public paddock access areas, bridges, toilets, parking, catering etc! I would just look at what has worked at the overseas circuits, (and what hasn't) but am wondering what everyone else thinks.

He is the decision make BR, so you cant forget him. If we want a round here (and it appears we do!) than he will have the final say. You may not like it but you have no choice but to accept it.
newtec1,
Apr 30, 7:53pm
How can you forget him,he is the BOSS whether you like it or not.And it has nothing to do with living in Jafaville,it is all to do with those points in # 54.I know it is big business, that's why they consider all those factors.
newtec1,
Apr 30, 8:00pm
That's what i said right from the 1st round @ HD.They are NZs answer to S/Cs and we will see more top drivers infiltrate the series, especially when the costs are nothing like a S/C.All it needs is a good support programe and aggresive promoters to come on board, watch this space.
bill-robinson,
May 1, 5:07am
TC is a promoter, his job is to extract as much money as possible for his aussie car parade. He will promise you anything to get your money and then want more to bring in the show with the extras.Regarding the airport and infrastucture problems well we all know Bathurst is between Sydney airportand downtown ,just turn right over the bridge.
