I really didn't want to have to clean them again, I have a spare engine that I could take them out and clean (many times), then just a quick replace when done. Still those ones were noisy too.

we call things different, to me thats not a shim, a shim is a disc, a thin disc like a button,
those HLA were designed to be lash free, if they are noisy they need cleaning and there is 16 of the little bugga's and 2 cams to pull to get to them
if they are clean and filled before replacing they will be silent
that oil additive someone mentioned above has good reports with a lot of mitsi owners, could be worth a crack - it is an oil cleaner , at 10k it shouldn't need it but also at 10k the enf\gine won't have a burden of carbon build up and sludge that may clog other parts either - something that usually scares me off using oil cleaners

Might try some moble 1 after I try some additive, It did good things for one of my old mazdas. If that doesn't work out they come.

try that can of oil additive, it certainly shuts up the mitsi rattle, but you know you will probably have to rip your spares out, clean them and drop them in later eh, lol

quater, what are the lobes like, nice and clean and well wet, or starting to discolour on the edges, from memory the oil feed is at the front and feed along each set of lifters then into the cam feeders from the back of each
is it clean in there or starting to blacken and get a few deposits around

I have'nt looked in there yet, The cover is a B***h to seal, Only go in there when I have to.

Jap lifters ie mitsi/subaru/mazda often get noisy because the seals have gone hard and they stay slightly compressed while running, not taking up the slack as they are designed to do. MBL8 tends to soften the seals which shuts them up again.

Pro-ma MBL8 worked on on my daughters clattery Mitsubishi.

MBL = Metal Based Lubricant

You could try getting the genuin mazda oil for it. I think it has a similar additive in it for the lifters.

I had an mx5 with that problem (common and lots of info on google) and was told by mx5 club put in recommended mazda oil and most important the mazda oil filter. Problem was solved straight away. I compared the mazda oil filter with the one that was used and there was a difference in depth and the guts of it. hope that helps

I did read that, Then someone else knocked the Idea. So worth a try. Time for an oil change anyway.

Genuine mazda oil has the additives in the oil that simply put reduces / stops the tappet noise. This is information I was told from a Mazda service department and infact I use the mazda (golden) oil myself on various vehicles. And it does a brilliant job at silencing the noise tap!

do a google on "miata lifter clean" or mx5 lifter clean and theres a great writup on how to strip/clean and rebuild them.the trick is to fill them up with oil via a syringe before refitting them

the last two engines with hla's that i work on we squeezed the centre back up with a small bolt in a vice and changed the engine oil and put it a lifter free and no complaints from any of the work
