So where would you go to get your GPS unit "officially calibrated"!

I'm thinking i might ask the cops if I'm pulled over again. ask to see their calibration certificate, and take note of who did it. if the do speedo's, maybe they do gps's.
thou id imagine a GPS would still have an error of margin. those satellites are how many miles above earth!

about 400 miles up. Accuracy depends on the number of satellites in view, and their angle relative to the horizon. The lower they are on the horizon the more accurate your fix will be. You couldn't calibrate a GPS unit, all it is doing is computing the information that it receives. If you check it on a Monday, then on Tuesday the satellite arrangement is far from ideal then accuracy would be less. It is out of our control and if you are concerned about accuracy then get one with the most modern/advanced GPS receiver that you can.

The margin of error of SATNAV is in the hands of the US Military.

Before people blather on about calibrating a SATNAV unit, read the article .http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki- /Global_Positioning_Systemit is really instructive.

you may not even get a ticket, CVIU officers are well known in the transport industry, for their lack of knowledge and understanding ofthe laws they are supposed to enforce, and it`s also widely known that they do use a lot of bluff. If you are a member of any transport industry group,( National Road Carriers, RTA,etc) ,get them to handle it for you. If youre not a member of any, you should join one, NRC, are an excellent organisation.

You could ask but they are not obliged to show you any evidence of calibration at the roadside

When you say speedo do you mean the police vehicles speedometer! Not a radar unit!
If thats the case, IIRC, police can "tail" a target vehicle and use their speedo to "mark" the speed both vehicles are travelling at. However, in order to do so the police speedo has to have been certified as being accurate.
If it was a radar unit they don't have to lock the other vehicles speed in,although obviously its easier if they can do so and can show it.

It's 'Relative Dimension' and I don't even watch Dr Who.

Nor, if speed is claimed to have been checked by an approved vehicle surveillance device, do they have to show you the reading or even lock it.

isnt it amazing. they can give you a fine, provide virtually no evidence other than their word, and then it sounds like its virtually possible to dispute successfully
