Everyone had a crack at dealers over the past few days ,now its the publics turn.
I have never had any problems with my trade in. my car is the best example ever seen and is actually better than the car I am trying to buy off you but just wanted to keep the age down , whats your best price ! and the best one.the dealer up the road offered me way more than you have but I dont want to get into a dutch auction.

How about"Give me your card an I will be back" "has the cam belt been done" "it's dearer than, not as good as,not as good a colour as,the one up the road"So why are you still looking at it and making an offer!

the one Ibe had a couple times was: (this is after theyve seen the ad and made a time to come round and look at it.) yeah, I just dont think its quite worth the asking price to me. My response is usually "Look pal, the price was advertised, if you arent looking at this type of vehicle at this price, youve just wasted my time" - I dont have time for muppets like that.
Oh, I also like how they will lean all over the vehicle 'hmm, theres a couple sratches down here' -pointing to a microscopic line that might even just be dirt etc Then theyll say 'yeah,. its not in too bad condition', then frown, and walk around it a couple of times, acting like they arent really that keen, then say 'Its probably only worth $xxx to me'

Ha,after selling over 200 cars you get used to the bull that they spin, get over it and move on. Or as we used to say,NEXT . Haha.

Gee willikers mon I gotta say I mentally rub my hands together when I get lines like that from people. My reply is simple. "So If I will sell you the car for XXXX orif I fix that scratch to your satisfaction will you buy the car!" But then I'm not an experienced salesman so I'm probablyt doing it wrong. .
kazbanz,

My reply there is with a (hopefully) butter wouldn't melt expression simply say. "Hey look you are right -it sounds like their car is a whole heap better/cheaper/nicer colored. Why don't we take a test drive in our car to their dealership so you can directly compare! After all i really want you to get the very best deal you can."

Lucky you got this one. So many people were after it.
Yeah, right.

"I've got X amount of cash right now that's Y amount lower than your non-negotiable asking price."
trogedon,
May 13, 1:09pm
Over the phone, without seeing the car "What's your bottom price!", "I'll give you X now" (= lots less than the asking price).

Salesmanship 202 - remove all barriers to completing the sale

When my ex bought her 328i it had a black grille. She said she would take it, at the asking price if they changed it to a stock silver one.the salesman didn't actually want to, and suggested he could get her a cheaper price on getting it painted at their painters!!
It took the managing director to call her later in the day saying it has been changed for her and when would she like to pick up.

That sounds like you are describing a dealer inspecting a potential trade-in!

I sold a car a few months back and the new buyer asked if I would give them a hundred bucks back "for luck"! I told them no, your getting it cheap as it is, no discounts. So they payed up, and all of a sudden were in a hurry to go. so I got them to wait a minute while I counted up the money and sure enough was a hundred bucks short. They made out like it was a honest mistake, but funnily enough had another hundred in their wallet to cover the shortfall!

That's not a problem.Dealers have always been prepared to haggle with me - there's no such thing as "non-negotiable" except from private sellers perhaps. But before you even bother to start, you've got to establish some mutual respect and empathy. If you commence negotiation with anybody with an "attitude" that suggests you think they're beneath you, or are trying to rip you off, you probably won't get very far. Not just cars, I'll haggle clothes, appliances, car parts, almost anything except groceries and booze or if you're already buying from a discount barn. And the retail sellers are almost always happy to haggle - so long as it's clear that they're haggling a genuine sale. You've got to be prepared to walk if they tell you to walk, and seal the deal on the spot if you haggle out a price that both parties agree to.

It's funny we struck an approach similar to this while we were looking around at cars down here, and I'll tell you what, he was the only guy we would have felt comfortable buying a vehicle from. And to be honest we felt a bit bad not buying a vehicle from their yard but the only one they had just didn't tick enough boxes for us options-wise (and it didn't drive as well as it should have).
It was a refreshing approach compared to some of the haggered old salesmen we talked to that were honestly trying to flog off some pretty rubbishy stuff.
As a disclaimer we struck some other potentially fine salesmen along the way, but they just didn't have what we were after so didn't really get a decent working over from us.Only one of my buyer's lines appears above, so maybe I'm not using the right ones!

Or you talk on the phone, agree to a price then when the buyer arrives start picking all sorts of minor stuff and then say they have less money "in my pocket right now".
kazbanz,

MM nothing personal but sometimes the price IS the price. There genuinely is no room for negotiation. In fairness to potential buyers though when that is the case I make that totally clear upfront before I even grab the car keys.

That's fair enough if as you say - you make that clear from the start.A tricky marketing decision though - deciding whether that's how you're going to price it.As they say, everybody wants a bargain.I don't envy some of the BS dealers have to put up with.I don't think many people realise that while some car dealers are sharks, they've got a far greater chance of getting bitten much harder by the real sharks elsewhere, being eased softly into buying stuff they don't need, with money they haven't got, to impress people who don't care.

We often go around car yards (well use too) And we were just looking.
kazbanz,
May 14, 3:26pm
If you were just looking then why not look around the carpark at a local mall!
kazbanz,
May 14, 3:29pm
Typical lines "How much for cash!" -quickly followed by "how much for my trade!' Followed shortly after by "what is your finance rate!"
amberjandal,

Try that at the gas station. oh . just looking.
