Not sure if snooping around people cars peering through the drivers window is really that kosha at the malls these days kaz

outbidyou2, May 14, 3:45pm
thats GOLD

gunhand, May 14, 3:51pm
Ive brought many a car from dealers over the years and most of the time Ive found them on a Sunday and gone back another day to express my interest.

kazbanz, May 14, 4:11pm
And snooping around private property snooping in cars -peering through the windows in a caryard is!-- JES SAYIN IS ALL

--In fairness I spent a fair bit of today scrubbing sticky lolly residue out ofabout 7 cars where the same family who were "just looking" had climbed through under over and in acompanied by little kids who were sucking on lolly pops.

r15, May 14, 4:13pm
i thought the reason they had car yards was so people could come and look at the cars.seems im mistaken!

kazbanz, May 14, 4:23pm
ACTUALLY -- just today I got hit by the very best of best when it comes to lines from a "customer"
Ok a "person" came into the yard 2 weeks ago.
Learner licence holder,On DPB, 3 kids, 2 strikes on their credit history, no deposit but wants finance on a car.
So for two weeks I work through their issues 1 by 1.--organise winz letters and organise a restricted licence test. Organise for payments to be made on the (in fairness) small debts they have against their credit history.
So finance is aproved because of the work done to clean up their act-and the "customer" then says."ohh hey I don't have to buy off a caryard do I! I can buy something of trade me now"

kazbanz, May 14, 4:24pm
unknot ya knickers -diddn't you see the laughing icon !

stevo2, May 14, 4:47pm
If Mrs Stevo goes into the supermarket and Im in the car, I might wander into the used car lot next door for a bit of a gander. When asked, I will say im just looking so the salesman doesnt get tied up with me (unless he wants to chat) and miss a potential sale.

richardmayes, May 15, 7:26am
And that, children, is why Richard always bought cars from private sellers.

If you sell cars for a living, there are two things you will here over and over and over again:
1. Has the cambelt been done!
2. I would like to get an AA check.

I am sure the first words from babies mouths, are no longer 'mumma' or dadda' but "Cambelt", as EVERY ONE now seems to be an expert on them, from little old ladies, to pre teen kids that tag along with their parents.

The AA is synonomous with pre inspection. I have never heard anyone say they want to get a 'Car inspection services' check on a car, or anyone else other than the AA, as if they are the only inspectors out there.

kazbanz, May 15, 8:07am
Toby-Then sell cars with no cambelt ;-)

Some stories from customers have me thinking that a lot of peopleask
" can I get an AA inspection done!" to see how the dealer reacts.
Some dealers/salesmen seem to think that an AA inspector is the devil incarnate.

tgray, May 15, 8:26am
I don't mind having a pre purchase inspection done on my cars, it's just that the AA note things like "stiff rear vision mirror" as a potential 'warning' to a customer. Very silly really. They had my car running for over an hour non stop apart from the compression test and he dropped his cigarette butts all over my driveway. Sorry, don't want to high jack the thread.

kazbanz, May 15, 8:33am
nahh toby the BEST from the AA is the line they use. "service sticker missing or defaced" when the car has seethrough clean oil and a new filter.

kcc55a, May 15, 8:37am
Looking at a car the other day at a dealers. I knew it had been on the lot for a while and when I checked the price through he wanted$300 ORC. It was an NZ reg car when new! Turned out he wanted me to pay for new WoF and Reg. because it had all expired while it was sitting on his yard.

bellky, May 15, 8:40am
Yeh well it's all relative to the price of the car I guess. I've never been able to strike a deal with a yard - they either don't value my trade or they over value their vehicle. They've got to make money I guess; I'd rather cut out the middle man and sell and buy privately.

eagles9999, May 15, 8:46am
Selling privately, its a minefield these days and certainly not easy. The funny part is that the first offer you get (which you usually turn down)is often the price it eventually goes for a few weeks later.

ontwowheels, May 15, 8:47am
ouch

ontwowheels, May 15, 8:51am
Im no dealer, but best line from a buyer I have had when selling privately was,
Its gonna need a new paint job soon. Theres a couple of grand.
Car was an 87 VL Calais. Pretty damn tidy, paint was in above average condition for a car that age. They tried picking it to pieces, but I knew they knew what they were looking at. They had after all turned up in another not so tidy VL Berlina. Wish I never sold it to them.

Oh and after letting them bargain me down further than I had told myself I wanted to go, they wanted me to give them all my spares ( a boot load from owning several VL's, INCL one that was stripped for parts). for free.

kcf, May 15, 1:18pm
I always enjoy "it has blah blah blah blah wrong with it"

To which I will typically reply "If it didn't, the price would be a lot higher"

Beer budget doesn't play well with champagne tastes.

tigra, May 15, 1:22pm
The funniest when some sweet young thing wants to know if it has had the cambelt changed.I assured her that we changedthe cambelt every fortnight.

nufix72, May 15, 1:42pm
My 2cents, but as a buyer I think the second two are fair questions. I am always realistic about the value of my trade and know some finance rates are a rip-off.

floscey, May 15, 1:49pm
Dont talk to me creep, im just looking.

a.woodrow, May 15, 2:13pm
Yep whenever I have had this line pulled on me I have always said, that's correct, and I have priced the car accordingly.
