Am I dreaming! Has anyone had around a 100km commute to work each day, then 100km back! Is it viable or insane! All open road driving from Taihape to Palmerston North. 1000km's a week.

I know people that live in hamilton & work In Ak central.
Faster for them than going from HB coast. My ex in-laws live in clarks beach & work on the shore, thats 2hrs.
It's more common than most people think.

#1- Good fun once you get to the Vinegar Hill turnoff.

Haha rsr72 yeah it is but I think it would be light footed driving sticking to the main highway.otherwise I think the petrol bill will go through the roof, then the 2nd story roof.

It's wages and the value of your lifestyle in Taihape versus the value you place on your time (time spent commuting), the cost of petrol, the cost of vehicle wear and tear and safety risk (e.g. the increased likelihood of accidents). If the former wins that equation, then it's worth it.

Good points shazza, thanks.

get yourself an ipod, wire it to your head deck, and subscribe to some good podcasts that match your interests - I reocmmend NPR Car Talk for funny car stuff, and Sound Opinions for music stuff. That way, a long commute is more productive

How long's that gonna take.1 hour 15! 1:20! Probably 1:30 if it's anywhere further in than Tremain Av. Plenty of people living in the big smoke take that long to get to work. Up to you though.

Should be no problem whatsoever. You're lucky you don't have to deal with traffic.

I walk from the house to the shed every day. and back.

I don't think its the distance that matters so much as the time involved. I used to commute 30km each way each day-but being in central auck rush hour it was an hour and a half commute each way.

LOL, how far! think i could better it.

That's true Smac, but I don't think we'll be getting the 'big smoke' salaries to match!

On a normal, no drama day I think it would be about 1 hour 20-25 minutes.

I used to commute Wellington/Auckland/Wellington- almost every weekend, for a few years.Until I could arrange business in Auckland on a Friday or bought a stack of cheap air fares.
I used to enjoy it.Loaded the CD rack, armed the radar detector and away.Varied the routes, from time to time.Came to know some high-speed back roads, too.
Now that I "live" in Auckalofa, I still miss the escape of driving the distance.

I suppose there'd be a value to that too, a lot of self-comtemplation time.

I suppose I have only given part of the story. My partner would be traveling to Palmy for work. I would be traveling North to the ski slopes for work. Taihape is roughly in the middle that's why I said that. She needs to be working in a relatvily built up city for her line of work, so if you have any other suggestions that would be helpful. Reason for Palmy is that she has a secure job. I guess there could be other options like Queenstown! Live in between Christchurch & Mt Hutt! Not too sure at the moment.

- Buy her a Porsche.

Very true!Had a small dictaphone to load reminders of "money moments".
10 cds were about enough for the trip.My iPod has nine days of music on it and audio books - enough for several trips.
Also sometimes listened to my scanner for nearby police patrols.Ideal, on route 27, in those days.
auido books could be good for a commuter - though they are too damned expensive.

It sounds like a fairly precarious position to be in.
(1) Both of you would be utterly dependent on your cars to get you to work, you're not going to be able to catch the bus or catch a ride in with a mate if your car is ever out of action.
(2) If you both spend 3 hours on the road, each, every day you are clocking up a LOT of time that you are exposed to the fallibility of other drivers. If someone has a bad day and pulls out in front of me on my way into town from Karori, my car's going to be bent but I'll almost certainly walk away from the scene. If someone has a bad day and pulls out in front of you or your partner on the open road, that will probably be a life-changing (life-ending!) moment for you.
(3) Is your ski-field work year round! If not, would it make sense to be closer to Palmy!

Bet I beat you both.

@ Richardmayes. Very true. I'm hoping to secure year round work, seasonal could be a possible outcome though for the first year or two.

If you want to be by a skifield, and she needs to be in town, you should DEFINITELY look at Queenstown / Wanaka.

My workmate travels from near raglan to otahuhu and back at least 7 times a fortnight.Lpg for an automotive fuel and coffee for the human fuel is the trick.P.s it takes him an hour and a half each direction-some of it is on gravel roads, inbetween coming to work and leaving he works 12 hour shifts in a mental and physical job, is no spring chicken and appears to get his sustenance from coffee and nicotiene. I dont know how he does it.
