had a 65 super minx. Good reliable car . Liked it at the time.

great to see so many of you having had a great run from your Rootesmobiles.I've had 5 Avengers - 1300 gl - 1500 super - 1600 -wagon & 2 1970 chryslers 1300 and 1600, all manual, the 1500 super was best all rounder, 1600 chrysler the most reliable and the wagon was slow as a wet week. on top of this I had a ratty old Vouge [s/minx shape] a rapier fastback and a bog standard hunter which seized in 3rd gear.all I currently own is my 1973 2 door gt avenger. great car.

Why isn't anyone racing a Rootes Group car in the AES Series! To the best of my knowledge, over the last 16 years we have had just 1 Sunbeam Alpine.Single season appearances from 1 Sunbeam fastback Rapier, 1 Avenger, 1 Minx/Humber 80.

Two local Avengers being modified. One with a Nissan engine that is not eligible.

No Imps.Strange, as when I was first sprinting, up to 1300cc class, it was always Imp vs Mini vs Escort.Imps were always faster due to higher revving engines, but probably more fragile than the others.

I once saw the Braemar Imp which, was a fairly well known racecar here in the 70s, dump the entire contents of its transaxle on the road at the old Wiri drag strip. It must have lifted the back of the car six inches in the air when it happened. I think the crank may have been involved too.

Actually Socram, there were some fairly notorious Rootes Group cars racing for a while, there was a Humber 80 with inlet ports machined straight into the head on about a 30 degree angle and lined with exhaust tube somehow. A couple of side draughts feeding into it and it went pretty good.
I knew a couple of guys in Onehunga that ran an Avenger with a Rover V8 at the Mystery Creek sprints.
I think at the time it was easier to make a Ford go fast though.

Owned an Imp for a couple of years. Was a FANTASTIC handling car and really a lot of fun to drive. Was not very powerful tho' but on a trip would keep up with most cars because of the handliing. I can remember chasing then passing a couple of cars going through the Manawatu Gorge. Mark 2 Zephyr and PA Vauxhall. Got past them then stayed ahead of them. Was fun watching them going all over the road trying to keep up. Once we got through tho' they were away with higher top speed. BUT the Imp was crap mechanically. Not very reliable.

If any Avenger has a non-Jap V8, that is period (ie about pre 1977), if road registered, it is still legal in AES or Arrow Wheels.

I have seen a Humber 80/Minx with a V8 (Ford!) being certified locally, but it is very much a tasty road car, rather than a racer.
