What, if any cars have you owned from the Rootes stable and how did they treat you!.

gooddealz2, Apr 12, 1:18pm
I have owned over twenty Super Snipes from 1952 to 1965.They're a wonderful car and I generally had a good run.Any car in particular that you're looking for! Super Minxes and stuff I believe are good too but they did a big range of vehicles.

esprit, Apr 12, 1:29pm
Ex Hillman Avenger pilot here. great little car, remember mine fondly.

mothergoose_nz, Apr 12, 1:29pm

nufix72, Apr 12, 1:37pm
63 superminx and 62 Humber 90 same car different bagdes but Superminx was english assembled. Thirsty but reliable they were.

richardmayes, Apr 12, 1:50pm
Owned none. (but then we are tribal BMC & Triumph in our clan. )

Fastback Sunbeam Rapiers definitely appeal though, especially since I heard (on here) that the Sunbeam Tiger V8 running gear more or less bolts in. I love all the glass around the cabin, and the line the wing takes straight through, and the squared-off front end with 4 round headlights.

The ordinary Rootes saloon cars just seem a bit too tall, solid & unsporty compared to some of their contemporaries.

Alpines & Tigers always seem overrated IMO, I'm not sure why one of those should be worth any more than a TR6 but I suppose there's no accounting for taste!

trogedon, Apr 12, 1:54pm
Alpines aren't worth more than TR6s (both in comparable condition) but Tigers have a price premium - being V8 n all.

richardmayes, Apr 12, 1:59pm
It's only a 160 horsepower V8 isn't it!

rob_man, Apr 12, 2:15pm

Did much the same with with my 65 Superminx 1600.
Ported, polished, freeflow, DCD Weber, Wade 240 cam. 70bhp at the back wheels on a dyno. Est 85 to 90bhp at motor.
Went really well, just too heavy to be competitive.

nzfatie, Apr 12, 7:19pm
Both great cars, just the Avenger is 200kg lighter, makes all the difference when racing!
While Avengers were viewed as a poor mans Ford in the 1970's, they did win the 1976 International Heatway Rally and hold the record of being the first NZ assembled 1600cc 4 door car to have a factory top speed of at least a 100mph (161 km/h) See.

My first car was a Singer Vogue. Biggest POS I ever owned! Had a kerosene can of oil in the boot. It was a case of fill 'er up with oil and check the petrol. Towed to the wreckers and managed to get a hundy for it.

sleuth, Apr 12, 8:28pm
Avenger Alpine was certainly good power to weight but Ford had profile with the GT Lotus and Escort.
The London to Sydney Hunter win put Rootes in the headlines in 68 and gave them really good publicity well into the 70's. Happened to be in Sydney at the time and watched it cross the finish line. The Ford camp were really peed off.
