Just watched closeup on TV1. While i think its a hazard for roadworkers when people are going too fast, it stinks that when i do the legal limit that i get tailgated from behind and even people honking their horns at me, just as they mentioned on TV, i often get people passing me, especially in a 100k zone that has been reduced to 30km. In some instances the signs are still standing for days after a new seal has been laid down too, i feel that the signs should be taken down ASAP, as they are left up for far too long alot of the time, sometimes you drive through tons of road cones and no road workers or trucks/machinery etc in sight. Whats the point of a 30k limit. I dont want to risk loosing my licence doing 70k/h+ in these instances as i would be doing over 40 above the limit, but it sucks when i get people tailgate me or overtake me in these cases sometimes even getting stonechips from their wheels when passing.

we have one of these temporary speedlimits since about 6 month. you need to know who got the lower speed limit and when it expires. if it is expired then they cant fine you for ignoring the speed on the temp signe. That is what i was told by some guy

simple, drive to the posted speed limit and dont worry about the cars behind you. Maybe the 30k sign stays there for a few days untill the stones are swept off! pretty dangerous for bikers/cyclists to have cars doing 100k's flicking up stones

Totally agree. Quite why they can't cover the signs at knocking off time is beyond me, if there is no danger
The only place on the motorway system I get overtaken regularly, is where the limit has been dropped and even then I am doing 10kph above the limit, which is as fast as I am going to go.

it really pisses me off when you slow down for these temporary speed limits and as the OP said people overtake you or stick on your bumper is it really that hard to do as the sign says!

Why do you care if they overtake! That's their issue. Your life is no better or worse off if they do it or not.

Depends on whether there's loose metal or not.

True but if someone wants to blow off into the sunset I don't care personally. If they get a stone for lack of foresight tailgating then even better

I have overtaken cars in roadworks on occasion because its the only chance I get, in normal passing lanes and opportunities they speed up to prevent overtaking.
Although, drivers who normally speed up when its safe to overtake normally ignore roadworks signs anyway.

I have to admit, I often ignore them completely. In the Tron we have had to endure 50kph limits in several areas for months yet there is really no logical reason for it. After a while of driving completely straight and flat roads at a painful speed I start to lose my rag with it all. Hell, I followed a cop the other day heading to 'The Base' who was doing 80 in one of the painfully stupid 50 zones! I should have made a citizens arrest lol.

the issue is its normally my car that ends up covered in stones

Got sprayed with gravel by some tourists that flew past me in a temp 30km/h area on SH1.
Saw them up the road a bit later planking on railway tracks. Hopefully Darwin sorted them out.

My thoughts exactly. Not my problem if someone isn't content with the speed I do.

i was wondering if they had such guidelines, i think 30km/h is too slow in an area that is usually 100km/h anyway.

+1
And tons of dust after ive just cleaned my car!
If its a dusty road, and/or full of loose stones, thats when i feel everyone should stick to the limit.
And the flaming road workers should get on with the job instead of spraying water days on end without getting anything done!

thats got to be a windup nz, you know damn well that even 30km will toss rocks into you'rs and others windscreens
and your last post - you'd be moaning to hell if they didin't water it all down, first the dust and later after sealing the road would end up rippled to billio, it's that watering that settles and binds the road bed, and allows even compaction from the rollers, without it you'd feel the start and end of every truckload of base put in there, it's bad enough now when they cut out and patch a piece, all in the same day, a week later and you have a dip in the road due to insufficient water and compaction now sunk

I think the only solution is don't travel anywhere a month either side of easter, that seems to be the time of the year when whatever's left in the roadworks budget gets used up. We drove up to New Plymouth a couple of weeks ago and there were about 5 major roadworks sites along the way.
It's worse when some @$$ coming the other way at 80km/h throws up a stone, and you hit it head-on at 30km/h giving you a much higher impact speed - hence a much worse stone chip!

You want to try riding a road bicycle through roadworks while some dickwad speeds past you! Another time I was doing 30 + kph on my bicycle through roadworks (limit for them was 30) and a truck and car passed me. They just couldn't stay behind the bike rider even if he was doing the max. speed.

seriously! you expect us to go 10km!
As far as wetting down the roads, thats great, except that when they did it by our street, they only did it once or twice a day, and all the dust was coming inside our house.

if you don't mind broken windscreens and chips all over the front of your car then go at whatever speed you like, I don't and didn't recommend any particular speed (did I recommend 10km somewhere!), drive according to your dream, and hope all coming towards you will have a similar consideration for you too - it's a long way home with a broken windscreen from even just 15 km, worse if it is 300km

being the good neighbour you are you would have got the hose out and wet it down for them more often, thus save yourself and your neighbours the hassle of dust all day Tui, right!

Nex Minet. !What. Happens when someone gets hurt by you speeding. Through roadworkstoo lateNXT Minet .

Hell yeah its a Tui. I wouldnt expect anyone to get the hose out, but the tanker drivers would only come by to make out that they are working, in one case the council got complaints and the contractors were forced to finish the job that was dragged out for far too long.

comon' nz, it's not the speed that chucks the chips, it's the tread pattern on the tyre and the chip size, nice big chunky 31X10 on the ute showers all and sundry if the chip is just the right size to lodge in the grooves, yet hardly disturbs a chip on new road works further down the road
even you know and acknowledge this - 'stone chips if tailgating' says you're aware you're tossin a few out the back, how many bounce up in the front and chip your own valance, how many flick out to the side and chip another oncoming vehicle do you care either way, or do you consider what ta hell, I'm not damaging my car so lets go faster, if someone loses a screen coming towards me I ain't gonna see it or care
skin1235,
Apr 12, 11:33am
as I said before, I hope the oncoming traffic display the same consideration for you as you do for them
