here is what to do try and give it back but i guess that wont work . You do not want to spend any money on fixing it as it is just even more money down the drain. You should get somone to see why it has crapped it self and if the head is cracked now as it likely is and if the last person has added iron tight to seal the cracked block and onsell it. thats the sort of stuff to find out . There is a lot of reasons why they blow up they are a nightmare with spagheti hoses all over the place for cooling to find out if the seller has knowen that it was broken already when they sold it.

Question Lou Lou, did you notice anyincrease of temperature on the temperature gauge before you noticed the steam and water gush out of the vehicle! Did the vehicles engine smell hot in any way or start making pinging noises after you switched it off! Did you notice any difference in the way the vehicle drove eg. jerking or slowing down by itself before you noticed the steam and water gushing out of it! Were you stopped when you noticed all the steam etc and how long after noticing it was the engine stopped! Did you switch the engine off or did it stop by itself! All relevant questions I'm afraid.Hope it turns out OK in the end, hopefully it's something like a split hose or similar .easily fixed. After all of these questions .to be dead sure I would NOT drive it until it's been thoroughly checked over, have it towed for your peace of minds sake rather than risking doing any likely serious damage, hopefully you caught it in time.Good Luck Lou Lou.

Why dont you ring a mobile mechaniche can diagnoseproblem without you risking driving it .Tell him symptoms & he may even haveparts to fix itproviding its not a cracked head . They are cheaper than agarage too .

The car had been making pinging noises when we stopped and it had been since just after we got it. No jerking or anything. I heard the bubbling sound and stopped straight away and turned the engine off and then the steam started coming out.I switched the engine off.

The previous owner says he has owned it for 6 years and is 'mechanically sound'. Mmn.

what are you going to do if you find out it isnt! in the second hand car market it is always a gamble that is why they are the price they are I sold a landrover diesel tray years ago it ran ok for landrover I had recipts 2 weeks latter got the call engine blew 8 weeks latter gearbox had blown he had put a 6 in it then one of the diffs not everyone drives the same treats things the same checks fluid levels
we have not heard if it is the head yet.as I see it bugger all you can do about it

Still waiting to hear back off my mechanic. My friends dad, who'a car guy said to check to see if the oil was milky which it wasn't and then to take the cap off the water bit, start the engine and see if the water bubbles which it didn't. Waiting to hear back off him

When we picked the van up the lady said it was her father in laws vehicle and he'd owned it for 6 years and passed away suddenly a few months ago and they were selling it as they had no need for it. She said he looked after it meticulously. She seemed genuine.

Still., i reckon old people movers are not good buys.they are maintenance heavy , hard to work on and get a hard life.my boss has a 2000 Chariot.constant problems.by g/f has a 1991 Laser.never ever needs any work done on it.would suggest a medium size 5 door hatch or small wagon would be a better bet for a lady with 2 kids on a budget.

(Oops, posting on an account that is not mine again.)
As others have said, don't drive it ANYWHERE until you know the problem has been fixed.
Your problem at present MAY be only a dysfunctional thermostat, or possibly the radiator blocked up with sludge.
But if you drive it with the cooling system not right, you may VERY quickly cause fatal damage to the engine. a lot of these new-fangled Japanese engines die VERY quickly if you run them and they overheat.

Hi.I had the same problem with my Estima when I replaced the radiator coolent.the van would overheat and shoot fluid out the overflow bottle.I replaced the thermostat - still the same problem.heres how I fixed it.there is no radiator breather pipe or vent to help you fill the system to the top and get all the air bubbles out - these are what caused the system to overheat. So when it was cold I took off the top raditor pipe.
hendos,

.and started squeezing all the other pipes to force the air bubbles to the top. .Then I inserted a garden hose and a small funnel and slowly filled the radiator hose up until fluid was coming out the top and quickly pushed the hose on.this way only a few bubbles were present.I squeezed the top hose until fluid went into the overflow.and it was fixed.no more overheating!Bad design by Toyota but great vans.hope this helps and it will save you money!
