Read this in the paper, apparently its costing classic and vintage car owners too much for cars that are only driven a few times a year.
Dont know what this will mean now.

"VTNZ Fenton Park manager Reg Monk said the failure rate for vehicles more than six years old was already high" Thats because VTNZ are muppets.

sheepey, Apr 3, 7:07am
The current system has everyone busy trying to cover their arse. There IS most definitely a quota system with a "expected" pass and failure rate. The system sucks, it's much like a scratch and win!By saying that i mean if you get inspected by someone who has specialised in your vehicle type and knows it's bugs you are most likely to get failed, they are more likely to find faults. I know of a vehicle here in Dunedin that was set up with 8 reasonably obvious faults, even things like fixing points on drivers seat missing, it passed!
I will now wait for all those who make a living from it to tell me how good the systemis!

VTNZ dont know my car for peanuts, they failed me countless times on things that were OK, such as my power steering which i had to get a written letter from my mechanic to explain this was the design of my particular power steering unit before it got the OK, on the other hand VTNZ passed me on a faulty wheel bearing and said it only needed the hub nut tightened, which i did and they passed it, but little did they know was the whole bearing shell had collapsed and the whole thing fell apart on me on the road.

VTNZ may be a bit OTT sometimes but at least you dont have to leave your car there all day until someonegets aoundtoitatgarages .

i've been doing w.o.f's since moa ran up and down my street and funnily enough i agree with you,we have an audit by L.TN.Z and if your failure rate is X % the auditor is positively spoofing and patting you on the back, cause that shows what a great thing W.O.F inspections are.tui moment.

tgray, Apr 3, 2:28pm
If someone really wanted to , you could 'fail' almost any car that
is over 10 years old.

curlcrown, Apr 3, 2:39pm
What is the high falure rate though! I get WOFs done several times a week and most of the fails are for bulbs or torn whiper plades, even insecure bateries or spare wheels, all of which cost little or nothing to fix.

v8_mopar, Apr 3, 2:42pm
No wof hmmmmm. so instead of paying the wof place you will be paying the government in fines when your car is not up to scratch.

Sounds like big brother needs cash ;-) lol

sheepey, Apr 3, 3:01pm
So what changes! That's happening already but we the motorist get hit both ways!

v8_mopar, Apr 3, 3:08pm
Its not normal to get a fine if you car has a wof even if a tyre has gone slick. That would be a definite change

bashfulbro, Apr 3, 3:25pm
Interesting article. It`s all about losing money.nothing to do with safety.

sheepey, Apr 3, 3:26pm
Sure, but we have the mentality where fast cars are available and go fast bits are easy to get.Buy the car, tick up all the crap and mix and match to obtain the needed wof.The cops then ping these young guys who stick the tickets away until the amount becomes that huge it cant be covered. They then end up in court where the judge gives them 6 months PD for 50k worth of fines, the hourly rate is huge, is it any wonder they wont work!
All of us motorists are easy targets, we license multiple vehicles while we can only drive one. The whole system is stacked against us.

zoltec45, Apr 3, 3:57pm
WHAT are you even talking about!
Mental mate.

chris241, Apr 3, 4:17pm
i dont think it needs changing i realy dont see the problem geting a wof every 6 month.I drive a 1984 land cruiser and i take it off road so i expect to get picked up on things for my wof. I cant always find a problem with my truck untill i go for my wof so i think its a good thing. By the way most of the time it goes straight tru anyway pice of mind i spouse

What ignorant nitwit reporter would interview representatives from BOTH the MTA and VTNZ and expect to get anything other than the opinion they got! Two mouthpieces from the same outfit ,theres vested interest involved. Anyone noticed how much VTNZ has grown over the last 10 years or so!Its big business now. NZTA also know exactly what the failure rate is from individual inspection sites nationwide and what aspects of the vehicle are involved. This will no doubt be a big factor in what decision is made by parliament re the future of wofs and ther frequency.

bluekiwi16, Apr 3, 6:23pm
I for one drive easier on the roads if I know someone else is in charge of telling people if their cars are safe or not as opposed to leaving it up to someone who does not feel like paying for. new tyres for instance.

Can you see boyracers checking if everything is safe. or do they not go in anyway.

Icannot see VTNZ taking that change lightly as they would be out of business would they not.

toot5, Apr 3, 6:24pm
when we moved to the coast partner took car to testing station, think its a vtnz. Car failed for steering rack, she then went to the local ford dealer and said"its failed a wof."The man she spoke to said "its steering rack month."
After talking to locals we now know, they have months of failing cars for the same thing.

hyphen, Apr 3, 6:27pm
bollocks, man she spoke to realised he was talking to a woman and wound her up

toot5, Apr 3, 6:37pm
well it was a good guess on his part to pick what it failed on before he new.
And after that he said it was the third car in the last couple of weeks to turn up with the same thing from them

pebbles61, Apr 3, 6:46pm
No, not out of business, just less of it. Of course they're gonna drag their heels on the matter. Getting one year WOFs will be great for us classic owners =D

phlippy, Apr 3, 6:59pm
pros and cons for both sides really.
can see the police setting up much more road side testing stings.
Was waiting to get in a cab in wangas one day when the cops did a random check on the cab which had just passed the warrant the week before they spent 15 minutes going over it. No other cab was coming anywhere near us at the time because the cop was there.
i got pulled over for a brake light not working one night(blown Bulb), its not like you check them every time you start the car wonder what the fine would be for that.

nzoomed, Apr 3, 8:31pm
correct, but oddly VTNZ is a state owned enterprtise, so the profits go back to the Govt, and yet its the govt looking at making these changes!

kcc55a, Apr 3, 9:14pm
I take it you are relating to what happens in Aussie where you can get fined for things that would be fails if they had a WoF system like ours.
