Whats your take on number of "owners"?

Hi all,

just wondering if you could share some opinions with me.

I brought a car which was listed as 2 owners. In the description, the seller says the vehicle had 2 private owners.

I got the certificate today which says that the car has 6 registered owners which may include dealers.

My question is, 2 private owners in the description - fine - i get it.

the 2 owners listed under the 'number of owners' category/field though should be 6 not 2 right!

the car could have been owned by a company etc and technically they would still be an owner .

I like the car but not the fact that there was 6 registered owners and Im the 7th as I thought I was the second owner (i dont mind car dealer but am worried that mabye there was 2 companies that owned the car etc)

whats your thoughts on this!

Thanks

yeah I think that's a bit mis-leading, even with a dealer in between each owner it shouldn't be 6 owners!

I always go off the number of registered owners on the certificate, unless I know it has had one dealer which I would knock one number off.

Do you like the car! What difference to how good the car is does the number of owners make!

nightboss, Apr 2, 8:42am
Two questions:
Does a car dealer have to put vehicle into their name when they are selling it!
If a car is written off and paid out by Insurance company, do they have to become the registered owner!

My car looks like it has had about 6 owners. Dealer, then owner, then dealer, then me with the ex, and then just me and then I changed my name.

It really doesn't matter how many owners. I don't understand why people get so hung up on things like this.

nightboss, Apr 2, 9:03am
Not the number that matters as much as the type of owners.

bellky, Apr 2, 9:04am
Low owners on an older car means the owners have kept the car for a period of time and so presumably have kept the maintenance up and looked after it as they were planning on keeping it for a while.
As opposed to many owners who had the car for a short time, thrashed it and didn't care about maintenace as they were going to flick it on shortly anyway.

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 2, 9:07am
It only means that in your head and is based on spurious reasoning. The only evidence of maintenance is the records of that maintenance.

thanks for your replies.

Background, car is only 5 years old.

how it matters to me is this:
1st owner: most likely to get it serviced with no expense spared
2nd owner: selling due to upgrade or going overseas etc
3rd owner: spare car
4th owner: its just a car.servicing is over-rated
5th owner: hmm.car seems to have a problem.maybe i'll just temp fix and sell off

get my drift! It maybe just my way of thinking but to me, a car with lots of owners signals the car didnt get much love towards the end.

on top of this, if the car had 6 owners, i wouldnt pay so much for it compared to if it had 2.

question now is i got the car from a dealer.what should/can i do!

nightboss, Apr 2, 9:21am
All the car dealers are very quiet on here today, can't shut them up usually. Care to answer my question any car dealer!

gadgit3, Apr 2, 9:21am
I was trying to sell a car for a person a few weeks ago. The car was a good little car but it had been through 4 dealers and 2 private owners.
This large number of ownership was a big deal to most people even though most were dealers. I find this very confusing/frustrating! as if the car checks out what difference dose amount of owners make!

budgel, Apr 2, 9:22am
Apart from the number of owners, are you happy with the vehicle!

If happy, do nothing, if unhappy take it back and talk nicelyto the dealer. They may be prepared to work something out for you. If not, try the disputes tribunal and see how you go.

gadgit3, Apr 2, 9:27am
I work at a dealership and yes it dose have to go into your name first. And we have 3 lots all working as there own identie (sp) so if a customer wants a car that is on one of the other lots then that car is moved into our name before the sale so it's gone through 2 dealers then the new owner (you can now see how they rack up a few during it's life.

happy with the car - goes, good on gas etc etc
BUT
not happy with the other part in terms of owners as I would have either
A:) not paid as much for the car in the first place or
B:) maybe not have even brought this car

Im someone who looks ahead.I see myself owning this car for about a year and then i intend to move jobs within our company to a on-the-road role which means company car.

So, in a years time, most likely i am going to be selling.

For sale, car with 3 private owners is definately going to look more attractive and appealing than car with 7 owners. On top of this, most likely it will be worth more with 3 owners compared with 7.

Maybe in a few years you will have more experience about things. You must be comparatively young. I will explain more just to mock you.

You're not going to find 'records of mantenace' handed down with a car that is 20 years old and has had 15 or 20 owners.

There's more likely to be 'records of maintenace' from an owner who has owned the vehicle for a number of years and has kept records like me, I have 12 years of receipts representing $20k for one of my cars for example.

You will find that comparative low ownership represents a vehicle that has been well looked after, and in many cases there will be 'records of maintenance' as proof.

Please stop arguing with me with your one line rubbish.

nightboss, Apr 2, 9:39am
Hey Bellky, you missed your audience there, too many words for (insert infant name here) to follow. Should have added a couple of pictures and kept it shorter.

loose.unit8, Apr 2, 9:44am
I've never (knowingly) bought a NZ new car or bike so number of owners has never really been relevant.I've also never had a car or bike come with maintenance 'evidence' either.I very regularly maintain all my vehicles but I do all the work myself so consequently there is also no records as such for the next owner. To me, a short period of ownership is more a red flag than total number of owners.

bellky, Apr 2, 9:45am
Thanks nightboss.

nightboss, Apr 2, 9:45am
Thanks Gadgit3, I was unaware of that.
What about Insurance companies when car is paid out after write off accident! Does it go into their name!

r0b, Apr 2, 9:49am
thanks for your replies people.

is there any way to find out whether past owners were private, company or dealers!

it appears that this information is no longer avaliable!

Cheers

gadgit3, Apr 2, 9:56am
Unsure of insurance Co. But to be done correct it would have to be moved into the insurers name as they have possesion of the vehicle.

nightboss, Apr 2, 9:58am
That is my understanding too, they buy it off you so they can dispose of it however they see fit, can not do anything else with it while you own it without your permission.

paulap, Apr 2, 11:06am
You can pay dollars to get the owner history. Bout $10 last time I did it I think.

tonyrockyhorror, Apr 2, 11:32am
Please bite me. I'll argue with whoever I like.
