I was in the UK and watched this when first broadcast. In the newspapers a few days later a controversy developed when they suggested Top Gear had manipulated the Volvo to make it weaker.

They did not say in the video that the Volvo was engineless. There are just comments from a few youtube posters claiming it was.

Checkout the vid at 2:53-2:56 and you will see a coolant hose moving and the front of the engine of the Volvo under the bonnet.
Even if that particular video is fake, it is not a stretch of the imagination to grasp that crash safety design has moved on in the last 20 years or so, and newer cars really are safer.

Perhaps. The 02 Altezza, the 03 Mirage and the 10 Nitro are in no way better cars for crashing, handling or braking. Though a pedestrian is more likely to survive if I hit them in those 3. However, in saying that I am less likely to hit them in the 740 (due to the superior brakes).
I think some of these crash ratings are much of a much. I have had 2 people drive up the ass of the Dodge (marked the towbar a bit) but annihilated their cars (03 Peugeot and an 05 Corolla) I think its to do with the whole full chassis thing. However due to the suppleness of the front end of the Nitro, I really think I would come off second best if I drove up someones butt - but a pedestrian would definitely survive.
