His 'bible' the Dog And Lemon Guide was actually the result of a survey of 25000 car owners experiences, not just his own.

gtf, May 29, 7:35pm
Wasn't he on the Board of Directors for the now defunct Trade & Exchange newspaper! Says plenty.

mm12345, May 29, 8:12pm
How about some facts!A lot of whining here about the man, but nothing substantial to say he's wrong.Old Falcons and Celicas that didn't break down - ummm - so what!Plenty of others do.
Tarring a brand because they put out a lemon model every now and then!Good on him - if the Toyotas and BMWs of this world got more of that, then perhaps they'd pull their heads in to make sure that a consumer could buy a new model of their brand with confidence, instead of the reality that people do get shafted with turkey models from all makers, and the day the warranty expires, the auto maker walks the other way as fast as they can.

Apart from his book I see him commenting on the future of the NZ car industry and also Road Safety issues. What in his garage/ mechanic background gives him such licence!

pauldw, May 29, 9:59pm
The latest issue being R plates for restricted licence holders. From the Herald "Clive Matthew-Wilson believed restricted plates were of only limited benefit. "Half of the highest risk group don't have licences anyway. How can R plates possibly curb their behaviour!""

Maybe a mechanical background gives a good grounding in logical thinking :-D

i agree with almost every article, there are others out there with common sense, and a couple in the forums.

(This perception that European cars are somehow a superior alternative to the Japanese variety often seduces otherwise intelligent people into buying overpriced European models that turn out to be lemons.)

haha classic!

zephyrheaven, May 30, 4:36pm
Ive left it next to my bed for a few years, when Ive given up reading about warbirds lost in weird places - I flip a few pages for a laugh

jason18, May 30, 4:44pm
Oh that makes sense. They never asked me! haha

craigsmith, May 30, 4:59pm
Sorry was that the case! I had the impression it was the other way round. Certainly was last time I compared the overinflated prices of hyped "reliable" 2nd hand Toyotas to anything comparable from Euro brands.

nzeva, May 30, 5:35pm
New Euros are expensive coz they have a warranty.2nd hand ones are cheap coz they don't.a bit of rocket science for you.haha
Guy I know won a brand new Peugot.just after the 3 year warranty expired he noticed the gearbox was leaking oil. No biggy he thought.just a seal needs replacing.
Took it to the dealer.sorry sir they aren't repairable.we have to fit a new one.that'll be $5000 thanks!
No major problems since then, so he's still ahead.
Moral of the story.only get a Euro car if it's free.LOL

Anybody that drives a pommie piece of crap's opinion is worth nothing.

johnf_456, May 30, 9:04pm
The Fiat man on these boards will not be very happy with that comment!

papas_missus, May 31, 5:37pm
Jeesus, what will he make of my ageing first generation V70 then! But I guess it was nearly free - compared to what a new one costs. He speaks some home truths however, but cars are hardly guaranteed to die exactly as he suggests. If anything, he may supply good options for people to service before the 'inevitable' happens. I refuse to buy Crunchy Granola, no matter how trendy or popular the concept.

andrea_w, May 31, 5:54pm
The people that actually agree with that twits "fairy tales" are the exact people that are in his target audience.
Anyone with a shred of common sense will use his book for a more practical things - emergency toilet paper, cleaning up oil, fixing a wobbly table by propping up one leg, starting a wood fire at home, swatting flies, making a paper mache car etc etc. Anything but reading and absorbing the drivel contained within.

gunhand, May 31, 6:21pm
Have just had a we read of some of it. Interestingly he says many of the things people preach on here to be true in the "Seven Deadly Sins. The causes of road accidents"So in fact many of you have the same opinion as him.
I assume its something he wrote!
Example, He agrees that a driver on clear straight bit of road going slighty above the limit (10kph) poses no real threat. However he then explains why that driver shouldnt be let away with it either. Its a long read but interesting.

Cant say ive read any reviews on cars so maybe he comes unstuck there.

craigsmith, May 31, 7:09pm
A lot of the stuff in his opinion pieces on his website, particularly concerning topics containing the words "European", "German", and "American", goes beyond cars and well in the territory of cultural criticism, not to mention having a bit of a stab at amateur historian. Frankly he comes across as ignorant and bigoted.

mm12345, May 31, 7:14pm
Examples please!

craigsmith, May 31, 7:23pm
Half of the stuff here: http://www.dogandlemon.com/articles

mm12345, May 31, 7:37pm
That's not an answer Craig.
Which half!

vic008, Jun 4, 8:43am
I've found him v. good-anytime any mates cars have failed, looked in book and there it is listed as a fault. All the critics are of the view that a crap book will survive in the market-obviously enough of a market support him. His traffic safety ideas sound better than anything the MOT ever put out. And hes also down on those SUV's (should be banned)

franc123, Jun 4, 9:15am
Whether you think his views are exaggerated or not, the D&L guide is still by an large a useful publication for used car buyers, if only for the reason that it contains a good collection of things that you should be looking for when looking at specific models. There is information in there that the manufacturers/agents won't tell you, and the general used car trade certainly won't. I'd agree with the above re the article on SUV's, the stated reasons behind their creation and the silly reasons why people buy them is totally true.

amberjandal, Jun 4, 3:05pm
The D&L guide is a waste of paper and every time I hear him on the radio I cringe , his knowledge may have worked in the ninetys but not today , his advice is usefull only in India where some of the cars he knows little about are still built.
