did the same really, step dad half owned a wrecking yard . the mini we bought with a blown piston and knackered cv joints , the angle box had a seized motor so i got shown what to do pulling old motors apart and making up new ones . i'm sure the mini weighed a good kilo more with all the skinned knuckles i got working on it.

Mmmm. It would also be reasonable to presume that the older age group mentioned are in fact the "lucky survivors"of the mad teen years but still haven'tmatured enough

Why! If you are stupid enough to choose such a car then you will be dumb enough to break several laws crashing the thing anyway. I know plenty of P platers in aussie and heaps of them break regulations. Look at the no passengers rule for restricted, it's sensible enough to stop show offs but so so many people break that rule especially the ones being targeted, as does the driving hours on a restricted, lots and lots and LOTS of people break those once again those the law is directed at and teens coming home late from work or picking up a drunk friend get caught in the crossfire.
It may seem sensible on the surface but it's a cluster**** cause a lot of NZ police don't use common sense when applying it (quota fillers) and the ones targeted are going to be unconcerned. Some teen inherits their uncles V8 and bam fines even though they drive it once a month very sensibly. Looking at things like the driving hours, passenger laws for restricted and cellphone laws and the like it just doesn't work. It comes back to NZ has a lax driving attitude, it's not until many drivers bite the big one that they finally get it and realize the car doesn't always go where pointed in your control. We need to stop with our crappy licensing and have people that DRIVE on the roads not people in blissfully unaware transit
Engines are easy to hot up, especially chipping ecus and the likes and there is no controlling that cause VTNZ don't know their ass from their elbow let what good headers are and the difference between a car idling bad from a poor idle valve or cause it has lumpy cams. So you if they try to regulate it they will fail cars that are stock or alternatively be oblivious to one that isn't, people are putting turbos on their cars and they don't spot it so they can't regulate, so set up ANOTHER department to do it, more fluffing, more paperwork, more BS for a lost cause
