Another litlle gem from a customer.
Theres a real shake in the steering of my car.
Hey no worries sometimes these things happen.
Car comes in and is checked over. Driven at 50 70 then 100km/h theres no shake in the steering.
Gave it back to the customer and get a very angry call.
STEERING STILL SHAKES -then mutterings of ripoff etc etc.
I then ask the questions. So exactly what speed is it starting to shake! what speed is it really bad!
Ohh it starts shaking at 140 and its REALLY bad at 160. Almost undriveable at faster than 160.
I mean how do I answer that. ! I'm not gonna risk my licenceneither is my alighnment guy.

pugmyre, Jun 14, 12:40pm
Hey kaz!You wouldn't want too many customers like this dude.Has he still got his license by any chance!

fiatracer, Jun 14, 12:49pm
well. I would be concerned if my car shook at those speeds, even if i never intended to drive so fast - something's not right.

kazbanz, Jun 14, 12:51pm
But how do you test it!

fiatracer, Jun 14, 12:53pm
i guess start with thelikely things - balancing, then the less likely - shitty bodykit wobbling, etc

kazbanz, Jun 14, 12:55pm
yea but again--How do you test it!--Im not driving faster than the speed limit

kazbanz, Jun 14, 12:56pm
No bodykit and we've done balancing etc already.

jcwholesale, Jun 14, 1:19pm
Geez it could be anything, just say sorry I don't speed & I don't expect my mechanics to either, it is perfect at the speed limit, nothing I can do.

bellky, Jun 14, 1:23pm
Yip.

sifty, Jun 14, 1:26pm
I would congratulate them for getting the Morry Minor to do the ton.

carmedic, Jun 14, 1:29pm
Sir you often get that just prior to takeoff, just accelerate past it!

richardmayes, Jun 14, 1:49pm
The goods are registered road cars, so fit for purpose is fit for normal legal road driving.

If he's using the car for motorsport then he's on his own. You didn't supply it with cage, MSNZ log book etc.

richardmayes, Jun 14, 1:52pm
How's he ever going to have a go at you over this!

!

pico42, Jun 14, 2:02pm
Tell him to supply the venue at which you can test the vehicle at those speeds.

mrfxit, Jun 14, 2:05pm
IN a NUTSHELL ;-)
Totally

3beers, Jun 14, 2:29pm
Im sorry sir but as a licensed dealer we are obligated to operate withinthe law . The only solution I can think of to resolve your issue is for you to find someone like your self that is prepared to operate outside the law .

fiatracer, Jun 14, 2:51pm
ok, so if I buy a car, and every time I cruise at 120 it overheats. I take it back and ask for the cooling system to be checked/fixed - you're saying I have no right because it's "fit for the purpose"!

Irrespective of the speed limit, a fault manifesting at higher speed is still an issue.

fiatracer, Jun 14, 2:53pm
ok, another scenario - I drive my car to the dealer at 80km/h and it has a steering wheel wobble.

I explain this. and you tell me "to find somebody who is prepared to operate oputside the law" because all the roads between my home and the dealer are limited to 50km/h. !

richynuts, Jun 14, 3:08pm
I would tell him "nothing more I can do so best just to take legal action"

kazbanz, Jun 14, 3:14pm
You're missin the point mate I aint for a nanosecond saying-go away not my problem. But WHEREcan a mechanic test drive the car legally in New zealand at a fast enough speed to establish the issue!I wouldn't use the silly cop out you are suggesting re 80km/h even though the nearest 100k zone is 5km away from here. But the apsolute max legal speed is 100km/h

supernova2, Jun 14, 3:24pm
Hire the track for a day seems the only answer, or perhaps tell him you think its ok but he needs to test it on the southern and give the cops a headsup.

3beers, Jun 14, 9:01pm
I was involved in a situation like this about 8 years ago having sold a new car to a client .
He to complained that it would develop a shudder at simlar speeds . Lucky for us we were able to prove that the modifications he had done to the car post purchase were to blame .
We had to remove the 19 inch rims and lowered suspension and install the original parts . and were lucky enough to have a track day booked at puke for a new model release so could take it down there and run it at the speeds he had issues with .

solarboy, Jun 14, 11:12pm
A tyre guy told me years ago when I had a similar problem that it'll show on the wheel balancer (of the type used back then at least ) at half the speed but to a lesser extent .Your client's problem should show at 70km/h and be noticeably worse at 80 .It did work with my car anyway, cured the imbalance and shakes.

ropes2, Jun 15, 2:45am
You could try a stud mounted wheel balancer rather than the traditional centre hole balancers, which if he's got aftermarket mags mounting from the centre hole on a balancer could be a problem. Let him do the testing.

dr.doolittle, Jun 15, 6:15am
Tell him you had it up to 240k on Muriwai Beach & it seemed fine.
