the new van that you see around these days with heps of aerials on it and always got 4-6 cars hanging round it and a pod hanging off each end.does anyone know what it actually does is it one of those new ones with number plate recognition gear in it. figure it must be for all the cars that hang round it withinsort of 100 metres.was outside motat yesterday

beno, Jun 14, 7:04pm
looks like it has two LED security lights on it. YUP i got pinged for my rego out by a month last week in panmure. "Was i speeding officer!" i asked.
she walked directly to my windscreenand pionted to my out of date rego.
the van doesnt have any windows in it and is all white. I wonder if a radar detector will pick up a signal from it!

xs1100, Jun 14, 7:12pm
cheers beno thats what i thought.got asked by a customer if i knew what it was and said it had rego recognition data in it which is why they need the chase cars

Its bait and switch every time yet the sheep just lap it up.

"Oh don't worry we won't be using it for picking on people with late licensing fees, its for finding stolen cars (that we don't even recover even if we know where it is)"

Wake up people, continuous licensing means the government always gets their money anyway. This sort of nonsense just puts people on the breadline into a poverty spiral right when the economy it tanking.

Its time the enablers stopped condoning this nonsense and we got a proper police force back that actually catches criminals. Instead they are mucking about trying to make money catching people on technicalities while the real criminals have a field day.

I am over it.

kaymay88, Jun 14, 7:44pm
its becoming very big brother isnt it!

download a file illegaly and you get more time in jail than the doctor who killed michael jackson. figure that out.

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 14, 9:41pm
Yes, ANPR van. It's easily defeated though. so, yet again, master criminals get away with things while Joe Public has to cough up for inconsequential minor technical breaches.

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 14, 9:50pm
No. It's not microwave. But the IR illumination is a giveaway at night. Digital cameras show that up. try pointing your TV remote at one and push the remote buttons.

Can't see me if I hide in a burnout cloud. :D

I was doing some work nearby where it was parked once, I was completely miffed that all these cops in south auckland had the time to stand around being paid to do NOTHING. Literally nothing. They were picking up just a few cars overall but what they were mostly doing was having lunch on the roadside then scorning people about expired rego they were going to have to pay anyway. It was basically a joke.

Hmmm.Interesting (sort of).Same people, same reactions.Anyway. what I reckon we should do is , first, write or call someone who knows what they are about and get an explanation about these things.I did and I was quite surprised at how co-operative they were and to learn of all the things they are used for. definitely not just WOF, COF, and licensing and that's for sure. Quite fascinating. hey! do the same. Check it out! They don't mind!

gedo1, Jun 15, 5:36am
Hmmm, again.You sure Jazz!

thejazzpianoma, Jun 15, 6:15am
There is always the "justified" reasons when you ask. Just like ticketing people at 1km/h over the limit is in the name of "road safety".

Good idea though, I do commend your recommending people get an answer direct from the horses mouth. Even though the answer in this case will be carefully crafted for public consumption the method is good.

gedo1, Jun 15, 6:25am
I agree one can sometimes get the PR thing but in this case it was not so because I found what they were telling me was actually happening.I also have to say I didn't see that many accompanying patrol cars.On one occasion it was just one and on another couple none at all.The work the officer in the van was doing was being gathered and forwarded or acted upon in different ways.I suppose when they also "detect" a vehicle with lapsed or overdue WOF, COF License then they have to act on it.

smac, Jun 15, 6:30am
Did you get a ticket!

berg, Jun 15, 6:31am
Having seen one of these vans in action, 1 stolen car recovered, 1 wanted to arrest for burgling, 2 known pissheads picked up (1pissed again), several unlicenced drivers and a few "no rego no WOF" vehicles stopped, all in two hours, I'd say that was well worth the police involvement. Get your tinfoil helmet out jazz, your paronoia is showing.

tonyrockyhorror, Jun 15, 8:50am
Spoken like a true boiling frog. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

This is just another stage in the throttling of our civil liberties. Once complete they'll be able to pass whatever law they like and you'll have absolutely no choice but to fully comply no matter how ridiculous. Clearly you have a much greater trust of politicians than do I.

1984 isn't fiction or even that imaginative. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.

modie61, Jun 15, 8:54am
Its quite simple isnt it,stay within the law and they wont annoy you.

gedo1, Jun 15, 8:55am
Well described Berg!Without the van every one of these events would have required a behaviour that caused a patrol to stop them to find the infringements or offences. Rough estimate say a dozen different patrol cars! Thus the use of the van has freed up most of those theoretical patrols to look out for and deal with other crime.Surely that is what the critics want! They cry out for it often enough!

nightsky1, Jun 15, 9:57am
.or stick to the rules, still your choice.
If you can't budget for vehicle costs, stay on the bus.

smac, Jun 15, 10:18am
C'mon.you're a clever guy, since when is enforcement of existing laws the civil liberties apocalypse!

elect70, Jun 15, 12:29pm
Do they even bother to load stolen vehicles into the system .Cant havepeople ripping off govtby not payingrego . But its only $100 if you get caught.

hamishcookie, Jun 15, 12:59pm
Until they have the noose so tight that any law they wish to impose on you will just have to be accepted.

hamishcookie, Jun 15, 1:00pm
And 20 demerits

offrd1, Jun 15, 1:14pm
Let me come with you for a day,i guarantee i could find enough things you do wrong to lose your licence.

gofer0007, Jun 15, 1:55pm
Its the new tech from the UK that reads regos plates and licence holders up to 140 kph. They can then pull you over to tell you not ask that ur REGO is out.Long over due, awesome news.

pollymay, Jun 15, 2:14pm
Since they can't use common sense and use the laws to enforce technicalities.

For instance, technically a bent number plate is illegal. However issuing tickets to 60's american cars that have folded the far edges to get it to fit in the space isn't doing squat for anyone. Then getting defensive and saying it should of had a self taping screw into the bootlid is going full retard. Who justifies themselves like that! "it's the law, therefore I'm going to throw the sensible reasoning for this behaviour out the window and treat them like a criminal breaking the mighty law"

And I know it happens, it should be thrown out the door the instant it's seen to be stupid but take it further and they justify it with things like "You could put it on self taping screws to the bootlid" so they justify ignorance with stupidity and tell you to pay up for something that shouldn't be an issue in the first place.
