After getting two tickets for not coming to a full stop at a stop sign (the same stop sign lol) I have noticed that most people don't come to a full stop.
So what are the ins and outs of the stop sign.
From what I know you must stop (for how long I don't know) in a position that is clear to see traffic from all angles. So you don't have to stop on the yellow lines if you cant see past say parked cars you would move forward more till you can see clearly then stop. I'm sure there's more to add to this.
What I see happen a lot, now I stop, is those behind me are forced to stop and can see clearly that there's no traffic so when I go so do they without stopping again once they get to the yellow lines.
Is this legal as they have stopped where they can see clearly.

they used to be tough on this in the old days when I got my licence(70`s)now it seems a forgotten thing!I did a defensive driving course way back then as well and we were told if you were in a position behind another vehicle etc and could see if the way was clear you did not have to stop again. Not often i see anyone stop these days but I always do!

Perfectly legal. The wording is: "stop his or her vehicle before entering the path of any possible vehicle flow at such a position as to be able to ascertain whether the way is clear for the driver to proceed;"
However in saying that, I can also imagine a bored cop giving somebody a hard time for it.

My first ticket was for not coming to a complete stop at the sign.
Since living in Auckland, I notice few people obey the "stop" signs - in our area, Averill Avenue and St Heliers Road are sites where this is particularly dangerous.Several people ignore red lights, too! It's a jungle, out there!

A 3 second stop is the rule at a stop sign I think.motorcyclist must place both feet on the ground.even if you come to a stationary position balancing with feet on the pegs for 3 seconds you must place your feet on the ground.

I dont have time for stop signs. Take Pahiatua for example, must be 30 identical intersections. Maybe 2-4 of them have stop signs, why, because a couple of useless coots failed to give way so they put a stop sign up.
I know of a situation where a milk tanker driver got a ticket for failing to stop at a stop sign on a rail crossing. So next crossing driver timed it from stationary to clearing the tracks. Then on next day off waited for train to come and timed from when train came into veiw to reach crossing.Time difference meant train would hit trailer. Driver got off I beleive.

Having said that, a stop sign saved my life once. Came up to a rail crossing on a sharp bend once and spotted the stop sign and hit the picks just as the train blasted its horn. Nearly shit myself. That was just south of Ashurst on a side road.

God - railway crossings is a whole other thread :/ think I'm lucky to be here today over an unmarked crossing.
I'm a bit surprised over the legality of the stop sign

typical dumb arse attitude. I'm sick of d!ck heads cruising through stops signs. Can't wait to see one get flattened by a truck.

i thought it was 50 demerits for failing to stop now! (each time)

Basically . A "stop" sign = FULL STOP, no forward or backward movement allowed A "Giveway" sign = be prepared to stop & give way to any approaching traffic = also effectively the same as what a lot of ppl call a "rolling stop"
The old request with motorbikes & both feet on the ground was a physical "proof" of stopping

Dumb arse attitude is people who fail to give way in the first place resulting in the stop sign being erected. I dont need nannies telling me how to drive, what safety shit I need and how I should live my life.
Takes a lot of energy to start a vehicle from stop. You make it sound like I dont bother to give way because I dont always come to a stop. Who's the dumb arse.

You might notice that many of the old stop sign intersections, you would stop anyway, even if it did have a giveway sign instead. I wasn't implying I dont take any notice of stop signs. If that were the case, I would definately be dead now.

For the car moving backwards, it would have already come to a complete stop, (and then stop again before it drives off) even though it's probably only for 0.001 second, it's a easy way to prove you stopped, twice even haha. Don't know how well that argument will hold up against a cop with a quota to fill though lol.

Well the 3 second rule may have been on a very, very old Weetbix packet it's a rule I had learned many moons ago and stuck to for almost 40yrs.as for the feet on the ground that was very recent when my boy had done his motorcycle defensive training course. My license consists of motorcycle, motor vehicle, truck & fork truck all of which I have kept without any discrepancies apart from 5 speeding tickets in the 40yrs.how say you trouser!

You don't need to break the law to get a ticket. Many Police have little grasp of the actual law and just blindly ticket for anything that sounds like it could be remotely illegal.
For example, try taking an un WOF and Reg vehicle on the road for the purposes of obtaining a WOF. Even if you ring the local cop shop and advise them of the date/time you will be doing this they will still ticket you. Yet its completely legal.
I just wish people would wake up and say enough is enough.
Maybe we should add the words "or Die" under the word "STOP" on the sign.
You come to a complete stop and wait until it's safe to go.

And it only takes one time. Which day will it happen!

Oh please. are you a cop or something!
The video you posted is of teenagers running from cops, its an oldie, but very impressive none the less. However its also pretty much irrelevant when trying to justify ticketing people who fail to come to a 'complete stop' from the 5kph they are likely going before they proceed through a clear intersection. A good cop would use discretion, most will take the easy ticket/revenue.

You can tell some people until your blue in the face and they'll still have to learn the hard way.unfortunately the innocent can be involved.
