If it is any help I have a 1997 2 litreCaldina, it is turbocharged and manual, totally stock standard and I tend to motor pretty quietly in it. I do about 420k a week, and I am spending $90 (using 96 and 98 grade gas). Previously I had a 1973 VW Beetle (manual, 91 grade gas), and before that a 1995 Cefiro (manual, 96 grade gas) and they both cost about $60 - 80 for same distance. The beetle was a 1.6 litre and the cefiro was 2 litre, perhaps those figures might be of some use! Good luck :)

How is people talking about fuel consumption in dollar terms ever going to help, given that the price of fuel fluctuates so much. Either one of those vehicles could be using more, dependant on the price at the time.

True but they were just offering some idea not a scientific study.
